So my group is getting ready to start Sea Wyvern's Wake pretty soon. The cleric/wizard of the group has yet to obtain a familiar, and is getting the itch to do so. He would like something "exotic," he says.
Well, I told him that it'll work well with the story if he just holds out a little longer. I figure that there's pleny of exotic animals on the Isle.
He's willing to take the Improved Familiar feat, too, although I may not make him. (He's the group's only caster, and a split one at that.)
Anyway, what awesome, exotic familiar should I push his way?

The Dragon issue that corresponds to same month (I think it has Lord Soth on the cover) has some exotic familiars listed. Our sorcerer chose the needletooth dinosaur from this article. This is not an improved familiar, just an exotic, though I think it does have improves also. There might also be something in the ST players guide, but I have not looked at that for a while. It certainly has exotic animals which our druid chose for his companion.
Also I simply took a few of the standard familiars and added my own exotic flavor to them to create my own that weren't 'improved'. The 'Sasserine Gator' is the rat familiar with a big thick tail (+2 to swim checks). The 'Amedio spotted fox' is a bat familiar with (+2 to hide checks).

Storm wreck has a few interesting ones:
Albatross, Sea Snake, Octopus, Fish-Owl!?Maybe a plant/Sagarro familiar?
What's this caster's personality like?
He's an old dwarf. A little secretive about his capabilites because his clan of dwarves are known as great warriors, of which he is not.
So he's not flashy at all. I think he'll be happy to get out of Sasserine where he'll be able to start flinging spells with reckless abandon.
I have Stormwrack at home, too, I'll have to give that a look when I get home.
The just finished BWG and interrogated Diamondback. They sent the party rogue to ransack her place, where he found that she had a parrot. He stole it (don't really know why). Still, I think that could be a fun familiar. Diamondback's old pet.
He's probably going to think that it's not "exotic enough," though. We'll see.

Give it two heads, shark teeth and tentacles. Then see how he feels about exotic *grin*
I guess I should have mentioned the article includes familiars from the Isle of Dread from where this PC hails.
