Given the vile nature of the sawtooth saber, I anticipated that it would hurt like a longsword and crit like a rapier, when in fact, all it looks like is a lightweight longsword.
I took care of this in my campaign my changing its critical threat range from 19-20 to 18-20.
Anyone share my sentiment?
I don't think my house rule is unbalancing, and if anything, seems more true to form with the description of the blade.

The main advantage of the sawtooth sabre as written is that, as a light weapon, you can wield one in your off hand with minimal penalty when fighting with two weapons. Increasing its crit range probably does make it too powerful as a result, but if you're cool with that in your campaign, go for it! :)

You can also use it in a grapple, right? One of my players took this as an exotic weapon, but he's also a Varisian ranger aspiring to be a member of the Sable Company. This is one of those "mechanics first, flavor cleanup afterwards" scenarios. Does anyone have any tips on how to integrate its use into his backstory?

And I shall!
I think the difference is that you guys are treating it as a lightweight longsword and I'm treating it as an overly wicked rapier.

Perhaps, he witnessed the red mantis murder a close friend with a sawtooth sabre and the scene of the dancing death blade remains etched in his mind. Now he keeps the mantis' signature weapon at the ready so that when he at last finds the mantis he can return the favor. (My name is Inigo. . .)
I imagine he’d probably have to keep the weapon sheathed in public to avoid having to answer questions over and over though.
I’d totally let him have the sabre. The poor PC is Varisian and he wants to be in Sable Company. He needs something good in his life. Mwa ha ha.

And with respect to the thread title:
Perhaps consider also what the mantis will do should they combine two of those sabers, one in each hand. Each hand can strike for 1d8 points of damage, yet each hand benefits from feats such as Weapon Focus.
1d8 for an off-hand weapon with a sawtooth saber is really hard to find, especially in OGL. 1d8 is a lot better than a stupid klar – primitive.
If I didn’t know I could crush a mantis with a single swipe of my greatsword, I’d almost be mildly concerned.
