Gwynneth vs. Gwyneth vs. Gwynedd

Liberty's Edge

It's spelled all three ways in England and Wales.

How would spell the Welsh name?

Why?

Liberty's Edge

If your real name was Gwynneth / Gwyneth / Gwynedd, how would you wish it to be spelled?

Gwynedd (when spelt that way) always makes me think of the place near Snowdonia where my cousin lives.

I quite like Gwynneth myself it would be more fun and flowing to write in pen with the double 'n'. ;)

Gwynneth and Gwyneth are girls names and Gwynedd is mostly used as a boys name as well I think.

Ooh! That rhymes!

Looking at an atlas now, it's Gwynedd.

The "dd" is pronounced "th" as in "thee".

I guess the Anglicised versions are out there because the English couldn't be bothered spelling it properly?

Mind you, I'm Welsh, but I don't care for the language (and never had to learn it, thankfully!).

You will find that the name is normally spelled 'Gwynneth' - while 'Gwynedd' is a part of Wales.

They are pronounced differently too, as Welsh is a completely phonetic language (i.e. every letter is pronounced as written). I'm not quite sure how to convey to you the difference between 'th' and 'dd' in writing, though! Think of the 'dd' as a softer more muted sound...

It's not often I get to hold forth about my native tongue!

The Exchange

Yes, I don't know of anyone called Gwynedd - it's a place.

Liberty's Edge

There's a Marfa, Texas; not sure if some pioneer couldn't spell Martha right.

The Exchange

He must have been from London.

"Oi! Marfa! I called this place after you, love."

Liberty's Edge

"Texas sure is hot, innit." ;)

Gwynneth

Thanks, to everyone.
