Collecting Demo / Fastplay / Intro / Quickstart RPGs

Other RPGs

I always need something new to collect. My latest project is picking up print and PDF versions of demo/intro/quickstart/fastplay RPG rules, and I'm looking for leads.

For the purposes of this collection, I'm looking for condensed versions of larger rulesets that are in print. I'm not looking for homebrew or PDF-only stuff.

In print, I've found Castles & Crusades, Tunnels & Trolls, Shadowrun (3rd), Septimus (d6), Alternity (the flip book version), Spycraft v1, Call of Cthulhu, Battlestar Galactica, Silver Age Sentinels and Marvel Universe.

In PDF, I've found Blue Rose, Harp Lite, Rolemaster Express, True20, Lejendary Adventures, the revised World of Darkness pamphlets from White Wolf (Vampire Requiem, Werewolf Forsaken, Promethean, Changeling, Storyteller, Mage, Scion)and, of course, Pathfinder Alpha.

What else do you recommend?

Thanks for the assist!

I know I have these laying around SOMEWHERE - not sure if it was the Decipher version or the Last Unicorn one, but at GenCon '05 they had fast play versions (8 pages long, cardstock cover, stapled pages, color exterior, B&W interior, with a special pair of d6 - Elven runes for LOTR, Klinzhai numbers for ST) for their Star Trek and Lord of the Rings RPGS.

I'm pretty sure there's one (PDF) for GURPS on the Steve Jackson Games site.

Those sound pretty keen...I'll start an eBay hunt.

Meanwhile, I dug around the Decipher site and found the PDF versions. Same thing for GURPS. Thanks for the tip!

GURPS Lite (both print and PDF) by Steve Jackson Games.

D&D has usually had a basic game / beginner's version of the game. that's how the "BECMI" version started, as a simplified, "Basic" set of the game rules.

For the current version, see this here.

Here is the link for the Savage Worlds Test Drive.

Highly recommended.

Awesome. Thanks!

...Hey, their Explorer's Edition is a slimmed down of the full rulebook, yes? I'll keep my eye open for it.

I've seen that at my FLGS and walked on by...I think I'll walk back. Thanks!

Actually, it's better than that--Savage World's: Explorer's Edition is the fully functional, latest version of Savage Worlds. It's slimmed down, but only in size rather than full rules (I do think it's missing some vehicle rules and such from the Revised Edition). And it costs $10. In print. It's definitely good stuff.

Best thread idea ever.

Thanks, Avidreader.

The White Wolf pdfs were available as hard copies too. Not sure if you're concentrating on one format over the other, so I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for letting me know about the print versions.

Print is my preference (but I never say no to a free PDF).

New discoveries in PDF:

Mutants & Masterminds; City of Heroes, Dream Pod 9 (Jovian Chronicles, Tribe 8, Heavy Gear, Gear Krieg); Diablo II; Star Wars; Exalted; Paranoia XP; Secrets of Zir'An.

I think all of these are available in print, except for City of Heroes.

Drive thru rpg.com allows you to filter by price.

Run a search for "free" and you will net about seventy games.

Look out for "Dog Town". It is a free Rpg. About six hundred pages of great seventies crime. Ignore the system and use it as a sourcebook series for WoD.

Linked.

Unfortunately, the linked file seems to be just a character sheet...

EDIT: I think this might be what you were thinking of.
