I'm trying to figure out where the Pathfinder RPG will fit on this Threefold Model.
Would any Paizo folks like to tell me where they fit? I'm thinking it will end up leaning very heavily on the Pretentious side.

I think it would be in between retro and pretentious, according to the linked diagram.
I get a really strong feeling that various people with professed love of greyhawk and making greyhawk 2, and they'll bedamned if they're gonna let another edition change sweep all their hard work under the rug... again.
I guess the problem is I'm a scrub, and I really don't give 2 figs about the old settings or feeling or whatever it is that is so important to golaranthia that its stories are told better in the old system (but not really the old system, the new old system)
I always wondered what it would like to be in the begining of a fantasy heartbreaker, and i guess now i know.

~and yes for the record, I like some of the old stuff, but I'm of the opinion that the old stuff ought to be played the old way. Lets bust out support for A or O dnd before we remake (by committee of raving fans) 3.5

Thank you for clarifying that, Takasi. :D
(although the link seems to be ENWorld members only)
I like the little colour wheel in the link you posted at the top of the thread, and the whacky analysis of certain other RPG games....
I wonder where Steve Jackson's Illuminati RPG would fit in?
I'm having trouble with opening the pdf download of 'Alpha edition' but I imagine that Pathfinder is likely to be at least Retro on the basis of the classification you linked to.

Retro and Pretentious, definitely. Interestingly probably more Retro, since a lot of decisions get made more with a firm bend toward tradition, and early edition feel. See Fortress of the Stone Giants for example. There's gobs of dungeons and dragons, traps and trolls, all that good stuff. But then we come to the beautiful pretentiousness of it all. Character is paramount. The dragons all have awesome personalities and histories. The cultures are beautiful, the cities and NPCs lovingly detailed. This is a game better than other games. Seriously, it's art. I can get really really snobby about it. That said though, first and foremost it's an altar to nostalgia and the grungy old grognards who love it so.
EDIT: HEY! I just thought of something! Instead of Stupid, the third axis should be called Goofy. That way the three categories would be...
R+P+G!
Seriously, how cool is that!

I'm happy with Mike Mearls "Retro Stupid" definition. It pleases me, since this was a term used by one of my players not long ago.
He pointed out that I'm "retro" and "old-school" and all that as he teased me for once again saying something like "Drachensgrab" or "Urnst" instead of our location in the game. I'm always accidentally dropping "wandering monster" or something retro into my gaming. It's getting so I don't have to stop and explain the terms anymore, though. *grin*
And as for "stupid"? I have one, count 'em, ONE serious campaign going at any one time. The rest are full of characters named Billy Flip and Steppin' Todd, or invading the evil disco of the undead Brothers Gibb to rescue Donna, Queen Of Summer.
I've downloaded the Alpha Thing, and look forward to reading it tonight.
Peace
