We’re currently in the Graul homestead of Pathfinder #3. I wanted to let the writes know that my veteran players (of all previous editions of the game) actually hated the guts of the goblins, were fearful of the ghouls and literally horrified by the ogrekin.
I wanted to get this out so you realize a DM with 28 years, and players with 26, 25 and 22 and 18 years among them can have their monsters presented in a way that the stats sort of melt away and the portrayal of the creatures, foreshadowing and actions speak for themselves. I’ve had the pleasure of doing this with new stats I’ve used over the years but…veteran players horrified and fearful of ogres? Ghouls?!
After the last session my wife said “this is the first time I feel like I need to take a bath after a D&D session”. Music to a DM’s ears. One of my more mechanically savvy players wrote to me yesterday: “They were just…ogres, weren’t they?” Even when I told him of the “half-ogre” stats, he still couldn’t believe he got all worked up over the monster you usually just beat to death till it dies.
The formula’s working. Keep up the great work. A little revisiting of the classics goes a long way!
