Seven Deadly Sins just ain't enough

Turns out that the Vatican is doubling it's number of Deadly Sins (sins that will endanger your immortal soul) to fourteen.

I hope this won't mess up Pathfinder :)

/Cross fingers.

'cmon tailgating!

$750 for a pair of Louboutins? That has to be some kind of sin, honestly…

Regardless of my feelings about the relevancy or absurdity of certain issues, it was nice to see them touch on the pedophilia issue and how they themselves had succumbed to the taint of it.

Question, do the new sins come with new eternal punishments? Also, will there be seven new virtues?

Good question- let's open the floor to suitably grisly punishments to fit these transgressions.

Taking or dealing in drugs. - Forced to watch Facts of Life reruns for all time.

So, will we get a new, revised RotRL adventure path with new runelords?
I hope that one of the sins is creating a reality TV show. Those people need some eternal punishment.

I thought most things were covered in the original seven. But, in the interests of keeping the thread interesting.

Not Reading or Understanding What You Sign- eternity in a first grade reading class.

Using 2 for two, 4 instead of for, or any other text shorthand in a non-text message limited situation. - Eternity with no thumbs.

Letting Rose Estes write a book, let alone 5 - Eternity suffering from a million paper cuts and soaked in lemon juice.

I love the irony there. Nicely done. :)

Isn't the Vatican one of the richest areas of the world, as well as having one of the highest accomulation of wealth per person? It seems they are breaking their own rules...

I always thought the original seven came with too much overlap; I mean, what's the difference between Avarice and Greed? Or even Envy?

You want something you've not earned, or that's not yours, either way, no?

They OWN the Sistine Chapel.

To bad Dragon Magazine is dead. They once did a great article on the Seven Deadly Sins as domains. I'd love to see these new ones get the same treatment.

Therein lies the rub- it belongs to the institution- the Popes are supposed to regard themselves as custodians, rather then owners; in the business of making sure the Vatican's treasures are handed down safely to the next guy. With such responsibilities come some compensations...

Splitting hairs, I know, but one that they've been sharpening their razors on this for centuries.

See, this is why I have rejected Catholicism. I was raised an Irish Roman Catholic, and even at the tender age of four, I began to realize that much of the pomp and circumstance of the Catholic Church was merely bullshit.

Why does the Church create all of the hype? Simply, to get more money. As Carlin put it, "God loves you, and he NEEDS MONEY! He's all-powerful, all-knowing, all-perfect, all-wise, but somehow, he just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more."

I just can't get behind that.

At least ya'll get Confession and Purgatory I was raised Southern Baptist I couldn't find a damn loop hole for the life of me. I got told I was going to hell for everything: cursing-hell, back talking-hell, not going to church-HELL, having sex-hell. I'm not sure how I got through my teens...

I asked that one time, What's God doing with my money? I got told I was going to hell.

You didn't. This is playing D&D-hell.

So what exactly are the new ones supposed to be? Seems grating they'd write a big article on it and not come out with the actual sins themselves. I'd really like a bulleted list, instead it feels more like a rant. Rargh polluters suck! Yeah and pediphiles and rich guys are lame too! And don't even get me going about those guys who genetically engineer stuff--oooh the Big Guy HATES them! (Wonder a bit if dog and horse breeders are gonna' be forced to stop...hmm)

Anyway I would have really appreciated a new list. I thought the punishment list was fun though. No wonder confessions are down. Heh.

Did god call this one in or just send a memo? I thought no one had talked to the man upstairs in some time…or least…anyone claiming to have spoken with him was quickly dressed in white and 'sent away'.

Fizz, have you kept up with the past +/- 2000 years of history, plus the stuff before that? This is par for the course. Hells, its a long-overdue return to form.

This seems a bit poorly-thought-out. Why is it sinfull to become obscenely rich? what constitutes obscenely rich? So, acheiving massive monetary success via perfectly legal and moral methods is a hell-worthy offense? Bill Gates may run a muscleing-out giant of a corporation, but He doesnt exactly grind competitor's faces in the dirt, or steal candy from children. Steve Jobbs is probably very wealthy (less so than others, but being a CEO of a company makes it unavoidable), and he's by all accounts a rather nice guy.

Immorality doesnt come from wealth; it comes from the means one uses to acheive wealth, and your lack of social responsibility to give back to the community that has been so good to you; letting you rise so far on luck and talent.

These completely miss the point. they ban pracitces, not the theory behind them. One might say: Thou Shalt not sully the world around you, harming thineself, others, and generations to come. this would ban pollution AND internet spamming.

Or: thou shalt hold all life sacred, and neither end nor manipulate it for thine own convenience. this prohibits killing, abortion, and genetic engineering all at once, though it does cause dog-breeders to go to hell (they deserve it, for what they did to dalmatians, bulldogs, and weiner dogs).

All in all, I call it bullshit.

I think all those CEO's should have their head nailed to the floor just on principle.

Religion is among the most dearly held beliefs for many individuals. While the new sins aren't as 'cool' as the last seven, the point is not to send more people to hell, but to open debate about these issues and make the point about whether they are right or wrong.

While pollution MIGHT have been covered on one of the earlier lists, it is an important issue NOW and the people who are engaged in pollution probably hadn't thought about it in that way.

In any case, it won't affect the Rise of the Runelords, though I find it interesting that some of the bad guys were doing these kinds of thigns anyway (Lamashtu and the unborn, for instance).

I also humbly ask that people in this thread avoid bashing organized religion. I'm a Roman Catholic (and have been since before I was born ;-) ) and while there are certainly debates we can have about the good and the bad the organized church has done, a message board about Dungeons and Dragons just isn't the place for it.

In light of recent developments, I suggest we continue this discussion here.

Spoiler:
And besides, I miss that thread.

The seven mortal sins were the start of this. The next pope instituted seven virtues, because he felt that the church should tell people WHAT to do, not only WHAT NOT to do. Now we get seven more (and admittedly rather different) mortal sins, and it seems to me that the church is mainly interested in WHAT NOT to do.

Big surprise. I am a protestant, and Luther did what he did because he felt that the church was content to grow fat and rich (St. Peter's cathedral, anyone?) on scaring people with hell. Lucrative business.

Oh, and I should add: everyone is entitled to their religious feelings and beliefs. It's just the practices of a massive, ultra-rich, power-hungry organization that's the problem for me.

Aberzombie wrote:

Point. I wish they had rep on this board.

Oh, and DeadDMWalking, what is the issue with, specifically, ORGANIZED religion? As opposed to someone's personal beliefs, I suppose?

Oh please- it's not like the a lot of Protestant Churches in the haven't taken that template and ran with it in the intervening centuries.

In any case, wasn't the obsession with going to Hell a hallmark of all brands of Christianity at that point? It's not like Luther and Calvin and the rest didn't invoke hellfire and damnation to their congregations.

Clearly we need seven more Virtues then! We can't let the forces of evil outnumber us with their 14 Sins!

I'll start;

1. Smelling nice. Cleanliness is next to Godliness, doncha know!

Hmmm, seven more Virtues. How about Skepticism, Competence, Adventurousness, Reliability, Benevolence, Tolerance, and Non-Proselyzation?

The Exchange

I find the one about pollution to be especially hypocritical. My priest drives a car, has heat in the winter and AC in the summer in his home and keeps the church at a moderate temperature year round.
I suppose he has trash to throw away also. Why is he suddenly committing a DEADLY sin? I could understand saying something like "wantonly destroying the environment" or "maliciously creating or improperly disposing of pollution" but the way they word it is that everyone who drove today just committed a DEADLY SIN!!!
I guess they want to guilt us into going to church more or giving more.
BTW- Roman Catholic over here. I took no offense to the prior remarks, because my god can beat up your god.
;P

No problem on my end. I redirect you to the above George Carlin clips.

IMO, I think the Roman Catholic Church is just trying to keep up with the times, to stay relevant. Though, I find it hard to understand how genetic manipulation can be considered a sin. Perhaps, they think that act constitutes unacceptale intrusion into the realm reserved for God. Who knows?

I am Catholic, by the way.

Liberty's Edge

Speaking as an agnostic, I don't care what people believe, just as long as those beliefs aren't imposed on those around them, especially if said folks have different beliefs.

I have no problem with religion.

However, I have major problems with proselytizing, lies, and just plain bullshit.

Again, in my opinion. Don't want to start something.
