Darklands?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

...are you sure that's what you want to call Golarion's Underdark?

The problem here is that for me, that term is indelibly identified with the world of Magnamund -- the Lone Wolf gamebooks of the 1980s, and Mongoose's D20 adaptation of same -- where it's the name of the vast, poisonous wasteland ruled by the Darklords of Naar.

It's evocative, yes, but I'm not sure it's a good idea...

"Underdark" might be a WOTC trademark though...

Meh, I prefer Darklands to Underdark. The term Darklands has been used so extensively to describe places ranging from cursed lands under an eternal shadow clear through malevolent alternate planes that really, the only connotation it has for me is a place of danger where you should be ready to defend yourself.

As a long time fan of Lone Wolf, Magnamund and much else from Joe Dever, Darklands is fine with me.

You're going into the Underdark.
OK, bring some more oil lamp, iron rations and anti-toxin. Maybe a backup weapon and some arrows too.

You're going into the Darklands.
Ouch. Just ouch. Do we really have to? That's scary.

Meh. For me, I'm reminded of the Darklands in the Warhammer World, where industrious dwarves touched by Chaos rule.

Although, it will be hard to NOT call it "Underdark".....

Reminds me of the microprose game Darklands from 1992.

Fantastic old game, shame it doesn't run on my PC any more.

Go to Darklands

Yeah, that was my thought as well. Fixed the linky for you...

No question, I'll be using "Underdark" over Darklands, but I have a feeling that it's probably a WotC term and Paizo can't use it.

You've got a point. "Darklands? But I don't have Nexus! Or a korlinium scabbard! ...Okay, I don't need the scabbard, but I WISH I did..." :)

Darklands is the name for Golarion's "underdark" region... and that's pretty much set in stone. We ARE aware of the video game and the Lone Wolf usage; there's a few more as well, but the name "Darklands" does everything we need it to do for Golarion. And although the usage of the word "underdark" may or may not be legal (it's unclear to me if it's Wizards of the Coast's intellectual property), what IS certain is that WotC/TSR popularized the name, and it IS pretty solidly identified to official D&D settings, particularly the Forgotten Realms.

The name "Darklands" isn't currently associated with an "underdark" setting, and frankly, it's a pretty simple name anyway. There's a Vast Swamp in Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms, after all...

Written in stone until you see my suggestion that is: The Undy Downy. It just feels good to say.

All righty then. I was primarily worried that "Darklands" might be Joe Dever's IP, but if it's scattered all over the place like that it's probably free for the taking... :)

White-eyed, blind cave crocs... check.

Throwing a goblin on the barbie... check.
"That's not a knife... this is a knife. +2 don'tcha know"... check.

EDIT: Spelunkabout... genius!

Any chance on it being more "hollow earth" than "underdarky?" (not referring to the old Hollow World setting, just hoping for dinos and stone age civilizations versus drow/illithid confict.)

I thought that was a fabric softener specifically designed for boxers.

You've cracked my naming code. All things laundry time inspire me.

That's a record I want to buy. Cibo Matto's food thing had nothing on you. I think Blue Cheer was attempting the same theme, but couldn't keep it going. Definitely not an all-temperature band.

I know I'm changing my fabric softner.

Anyway back on topic. I'm not entirely sold on the name Darklands myself. It definately has a more sinister feel to it than the underdark still I think it would be a better name for the Golarion plane of shadow myself. Plus it reminds me of that creepy N64 game shadow man as I swear Darklands was the name of the voddoo alternative plane in that game. Still if its set in stone then so be it. Definately could have done a lot worse name wise.

This was my reaction to the mention of the word "Underdark" for a long time in 2E. If it was even hinted that this was where we were going, I didn't want to go. Bad news. No thanks. I'll stay home and knit.

I think Darklands has that same feel. I like it.

Darklands is ok if they're actually 'lands', big open spaces underground, if it's tubes and warrens and such it doesn't sound right.

I can't honestly think of anything better though.

I suggested in another thread may just calling it "the Dark" or maybe "the Darkhollows" or "the Darkrealms." I can live with "the Darklands," but the word "lands" makes it sound very above ground to me. But if it's set in stone, so be it. I'll adapt.

I can get it working, but it crashes, even with the latest patches. No idea why. But thanks for the suggestion.

I love those old games.

No danger of any mind flayers, they are "intellectual" property of the enemy, I mean Wizards of the Coast. Which is good, as I don't actually like mind flayers that much.

Groan........ (OK I'll admit that it made me chuckle, what does that say about me?)

By the way, I am warming to the Darklands, kind of reminds me of Night Below boxed set adventure in some way.

Doesn't sound like it is under the ground- just sounds like somewhere dark, and a bit like Dreamlands. maybe it's just me.

Mind you when we played Night Below after a while the party got so used to it they started to refer to the surface as 'The Overlight'

Actually, the more I look at this name, the more I like it. It actually makes me think of the mind trip realm under Jirel's castle, for those who have read the Jirel of Joiry stories.

Count me in for supporting the Darklands name. Simple, to the point, and carries a tone that would seem to carry with the local superstitions. "Stay away from them, they're from the Darklands."

Those were quite disturbing.
