Supporting Paizo on a Budget!

4th Edition

Hello!

I've not posted here in an age (except one goodbye and thank you to our friends Dragon and Dungeon), as I've been off doing life things like getting married, moving and stuff.

I want to support Paizo and D&D 3rd edition and have been loving the Pathfinder stuff so far. One of the best things about capitalism is that I can vote with my wallet and would really like to do so and keep 3.x going for as long as possible. It's a great system and the best version of D&D so far. 4th Ed. may be awesome but I'm nowhere near done with 3rd yet.

The question I really want to ask is this. When is the best time to support Paizo, before or after the release of 4th edition? I want to influence the decision to keep putting stuff out for 3rd edition for as long as possible.

Living in the real world means I have a very limited budget for gaming at the moment. When I do spend it, I want it to count. If this means putting off buying future Pathfinders until after the release I will be happy to do so. Or if the support is more needed now, I will be straight down to my FLGS and next in the online store que to spend my entire 12 month gaming budget on Paizo stuff.

I (hope?) won't be in this situation forever and I can't wait to be able to spend HUGE sums of money of gaming stuff again. But setting yourself up and getting on with life can be an expensive prospect. Thank the gawds for gaming - necessary to get through the stress of it all!

Many thanks!

Well, first off, thanks for asking how to support us! The thing that works best for Paizo is a steady, consistent support of our product lines. Our various subscriptions are set up to do just this, allowing us to know, in advance, how many copies are guaranteed to be sold. But buying from your FLGS or ad hoc on paizo.com as finances allow also works fine. I would rather that any customer spend what they can, when they can, in as steady and consistent of a manner as possible. This makes it easier to plan and make our bills.

I hope this answers your question! And again, thanks for asking how to help keep Paizo alive and thriving!

Just the response I was looking for. Now, to plan a budget.... ;)

Many thanks!

As a fellow "on a budget" person, I subscribe to pathfinder. Fixed amount every month, quality adventure, and setting details. All at 30% off the coverprice. Great bang for the buck.

GameMastery guy myself . . .great for those who like a less linear adventure and more of a sandbox feel.

All the time budget allows is Pathfinder (even then, I am several volumes behind in my reading). If I can ever discover more time, somehow the funds will materialize for Planet Stories.

Both.

My suggestion is to support them before 4th edition's release to show how the consumer is still very interested in buying up 3.5 material.

After 4th edition if Paizo stays 3.5 then you should still support them to show that the consumer is still willing to spend money on 3.5 even though 4th edition is out there and available.

Supporting Paizo heavily before the 4th edition release is also good so that they can see how much that support drops or rises if they do decide to convert to 4th.

I know with a tight budget it may not be possible to support Paizo with your wallet both before and after the release, in wich case I'm not sure what would be better. I guess it depends on wether Paizo has decided to convert or not by the time 4th edition comes out.
If they say that they will then get the good stuff now before its gone.
If they stay they will stay 3.5 then I'd scoop stuff up after the 4th edition release to show that they made the right decision.

We'll see how my pending condo purchase pounds the gaming budget, but here's how I divide it.

Campaign setting- Pathfinder Chronicles subscriber

Interconnected self contained story arc- Pathfinder APs.

Series of flavourful kind of connected Modules- GameMastery

Books to read and just soak in the writers of past and present (and maybe future, who knows, Clinton might get a book ;-))- Planet Stories.

Odds and ends, well if you can't buy it from the FLGS, then you can buy it from the Paizo store.

I'd add in addition to the discounts for the various subscriptions you get the PDFs. To some people (me) these are bonus items that spoil you rotten. :)

There's no time like the present.

The subscriptions are great for a limited budget. If you like linked adventures with an coherent storyline, Pathfinder is your best bet. If you like a varied selection of different adventures covering a wide range of character levels, environments, and themes, then GameMastery is where you should spend your money. If you want comprehensive setting information so you can design your own adventures (or retrofit adventures you already have) in Golarion, then Pathfinder Chronicles may be what you're looking for. One warning on Pathfinder Chronicles: the month-by-month charges will not be consistent, which can be tough on a budget.

Liberty's Edge

As you can see from my various subscriber tags, the monetary budget part is OK, what I really need is a time management budget. Maybe Paizo can ship a "time stop" spell so I can get caught up on my reading! Or offer a speed reading class...
