I just starting running Burnt Offerings (players are loving Sandpoint BTW). Anyway, at the end of session #1 they had just cleaned out the glassworks and overcome Tsuto. The material indicates Tsuto's journal is in common, and after some thought I went that way when I prepped the player handout. In retrospect, even if Tsuto never *expected* the journal to read by anyone else, wouldn't he have written it in his native tongue just to be safe?
Not a big deal either way I guess, I just thought having him write it in common was an odd choice.
BTW, three of my four players are quite familiar with 3.5, and they have walked through everything so far. In fact, I think no more than 20% of the goblins have lived long enough to take an action. I leaving things alone for now, as I want to see how they fare in the Catacombs of Wrath and at Thistletop, but has anyone else noticed things seem quite easy for the first bit?

The early goblin encounters are more about flavor than about challenge, but that changes abruptly in Thistletop and the Catacombs. According to the PC death listings, Burnt Offerings has killed about 90% of all the PCs who have so far died in the AP. Most of those deaths were at Thistletop.

Tsuto's native tongue is Common. He only knows Minkai because of his family heritage, which is at least two generations away from a native Minkai speaker.
He only uses Minkai in his letter to Ameiko to try to keep the communication more secure.

Actually, it raises the question: where/when did Tsuto learn Minkai? If I remember correctly, he was basically given to Academy Turandarok and abandoned by his father when he was a child (because he was half-elven), and I doubt that they teach Minkai over there at the Academy.

Ameiko?
But yeah, good point...Minkai *isn't* his native tongue...not even his father's for that matter.

All right then...we'll see how the rest of Burnt Offerings goes. Thanks for the reply.

Hell's teeth! How long was the session? I'm two sessions in and they have only just finished the initial goblin encounters.
Oh - and my lot waded through most of the goblins, except when the mage was surprised and took a crit. :-)

Ack! Let me try that again...the board ate my reply...
The session was about 6 hours. Keep in mind my group is pretty focused, and I didn't run all the events between the initial assault and the glassworks...I ran the board hunt with Aldern Foxglove (using actual boar stats...probably the toughest thing they faced all night) and Shaelu's visit. I'm saving the rest for later, probably one for after the catacombs of wrath, and another to run just before Skinsaw.
If they keep up the current pace, they'll clean out the catacombs, run another "in-town" event, and probably start Thistletop this weekend. I'd expect finishing Thistletop will take an entire third session, perhaps a fourth if they have a rough time of things.
Of course, it really depends on how much time the PCs spend interacting with the sandpoint locals, etc. If they delve deeply into that, things could go longer. But now that they have Tsuto's journal, I think they'll be heading to Thistletop sooner rather than later.
I'll post again after the second session and let you know how it goes.
