Sihedron Ring

Rise of the Runelords

Hi. First, I want to apologize for the unbridled vagueries I'm about to unleash. As I'm at work and don't have time to find out if this question has been answered, I'll simple motor on and presume upon your forgiving natures. ;)

The Sihedron Ring detailed on pg. 37 of Spires on Xin-Shalast states that it has an aura of moderate abjuration and illusion. The requirements to craft this ring list: Forge Ring, endure elements, resistance and shield.

What I'm curious about is where is this power derived from?

"At will, as a standard action, you can use the Sihedron ring to change the appearance of your clothing or armor into any other kind of clothing or armor..."

I was considering including a ring with only this specific quality as a random treasure but I don't see what in the list of requirements would be responsible for it.

It looks like either a weakened *disguise self* or a specialized *silent image*. The nearest book item is the hat of disguise, but this should be less expensive as it does not change your face but only your armor. I would probably build it as a *disguise self* effect but at about 2/3 price.

On the Sihedron ring itself, the ability is pretty inexplicable: the spells needed to make one don't cover it, and the item's rationale doesn't call for it. If you are making an entry token for visiting dignitaries, *disguise armor* is a strange and troublesome ability. And K. and presumably most of his wizards have illusion as a forbidden school, so couldn't make these rings if they required an illusion spell. (Maybe that's why the requirement was dropped, but that's really an ugly hack.)

I can't remember if the item already does *endure elements(cold)* but if not, that would be a natural replacement. Or *feather fall*, for the visiting dignitary who falls off the Golden Stair.

Thanks Mary. Anyone else have more definitive input? Mr. Jacobs? Mr. Vaughan?

To make an item like that, I would think you should base it off the "Glammered" armor property, the pre-req for which is Disguise Self, I think.

Looks like Disguise Self was just left out of the crafting requirements.

Yeah; the original source for this ability is indeed the glamered magic ability for armor (DMG p219). Disguise self should be part of the list of spells required to make a Sihedron ring.

Thanks!
