If you like you can be the ranger aquaintence I learn of the handbill from (check the end of my backstory, or read it all if you like longwindedness)/me says "I would never voluntarily hang around in Korvosa other than to guide someone there or get supplies or check out some planned travesty to nature (the place stinks of civilization, all filth and greed)I can't stand the smell of the place!"

(I was also checking if /me works in this millieu...also there's Hoban, he could potentially be that Ranger or It could be...dun dun dun! Sir Not Appearing in this Party

I appreciate all of your enthusiasm to get this game rolling! :)

The last couple of days turned pretty crazy on me, but I'm going to be able to go over the remaining character sheets soon. Thanks for hanging in there.

As for the handbill...most likely, none of the PCs have ever met Captain Tolgrith, or been to Fort Thorn (although, if any of you want to write an acquaintance or friendship with the Captain into your background, there's really no harm in doing so. But, such an acquaintance would be from bygone days when Tolgrith was serving out of Korvosa...his assignment to Fort Thorn is relatively recent). I'm assuming that each character has noticed the handbill in Korvosa, and has signed up (for whatever motive suits your character) to go and talk to Tolgrith in further detail about the need to clear the vale and reestablish a vital trade route through the pass. As it happens, a merchant's caravan is heading into the vale to Fort Thorn to deliver supplies, so the PCs are all travelling along with the merchants. This will be the opening scene, and gives the PCs a vehicle to get to know each other a little bit (as they have been travelling together for a few days).

It shouldn't be too much longer before I get the IC thread rolling, and then all should become clearer, if it isn't already. Just another day or two, hopefully.

Oh, and like Amardolem suggests...if you guys want to create a pre-existing friendship (like between Fleaux and one of the rangers), that's fine as well.

The more you guys can get into the histories and personalities of your characters, the better the game will be! :)

Alright my character is finished

Give me a shout if anything is missing or needs changing

So, I put a background up.

I have all my stuff purchased, but I haven't put it up yet. I should be able to do that within the next hour or two.

If you're waiting to see my equipment, the only other magical items I have are some potions and a Handy Haversack, and the rest is mundane stuff.

Also, despite the "loner" tone of my background, I'm not opposed to being previously acquainted with any other member of the party.

Male Human

Hoban, did you take the Big Game Hunter bonus feat from the Rise of the Runelords players guide? Your background suggested it, but I didn't see it in your Feats and Abilities section.

I thought that required Ashendel's approval, based on background, but that's what I'd like to take.

Hoban Randir wrote:

You can go ahead and add the Big Game Hunter feat, Sean! :)

Finrod rasps "yes, but they will need our help." His eyes gleam as they peer into the distance at something only he can see.

Female Human Wizard 11 / Master of Flame

So we have:

Halfling Druid
Elf Ranger
Human Rogue/Ranger
Human Barbarian
Human Warmage

Right?

Interesting . . .

I can't really see Vel getting to know any of this crew before the journey, but if someone has suggestions, I'm open.

m other rogue/bard/ranger 1/2/1

Chelaxians, generelly think of the small folk as lackeys and second class citizens but there are always exceptions but after skimming your backstory, it's not likely we met as Vel is young and has her abilities from training and prowess, while the years have given Fleaux his level of expertise (6th) but Fleaux only holds predjudice against the ways of the "empire" not her people

M Halfling Druid/6

Fleaux's brows crinkle and his laugh lines briefly disappear as a frown passes over his features "This choice of words, -tame this wild land- doesn't bode well for the natural cretures therin and I am bound by an oath to investigate such.....progress" he intones then handingthe note back, quips "besides I had no where better to go just now."

Gaxsban is fine with friends and companions. He's been roaming the southern lands for a while now and he probably realities he needs friends to survive. He doesn't talk about his past and anyone traveling with him would know he's looking for a man named Jal, he's not terribly subtle about it, but he is very quite as to the actual reasons he's hunting the man.

Hey all,

I realized that even though we may still have some character sheet details to be approved, there's really no reason that you guys can't kick things off in-character, and do some role-playing.

So, without further ado, here's the In-Character thread for the game!

The opening scene is just for your PCs to establish their 'voices'. When next I post, I'll advance the scene to the arrival at the Fort proper. Please take this opportunity to talk to one another in-character about: your PCs motive for accompanying the caravan to the fort, hopes for future riches or rewards, past connections, boredom from the journey, or anything else you'd like. I'd also like it if your first post includes some sort of physical description of your character.

Have fun, and meanwhile, I'll get cracking on those character sheets, I promise!

Okay, I'm back to work on character sheets...fear my wrath! :)

Amardolem, let's start with Fleaux's skills...

I believe that his armor check penalty needs only be -2, not -3, because his magical hide shirt is, by default, also Masterwork...hence reducing by 1 the armor penalty. So, you can go ahead and adjust upwards by one all the relevant skills.

Hide looks like its missing a +3 from DEX, but it's also a cross-class skill...so I have +1.5 ranks +3 DEX +4 Size -2 Armor = +6 Total.

Heal needs another a +3 from WIS, for +6 total.

Also, Fleaux's Jump skill needs an additional -6 penalty due to his move being less than 30'. Total should be -6 after racial bonus and armor penalty.

You can add another +2 to Survival due to Nature Sense special ability, for total of +5.

Also, I can only see where you used 10 of the possible 12 bonus skill points for background. Did I miss the other two?

Go ahead and take a look at these skills for me, please, and then I'll have one last look at Fleaux before calling him finished.

Sean, I just looked over Hoban. First things first, he has 28 hit points.

Beyond that, I can't find any problems with what you have there. As noted previously, he still needs languages, a full equipment list, and the bonuses for a good background (regional feat and skill points).

Once that stuff is added, Hoban will be all set! :)

Guy,

I've been looking over Gaxsban's character sheet. Here are some comments and corrections...

Gaxsban has 64 hit points.

His Flat Footed AC would be 18, as he still retains his DEX bonus (due to Uncanny Dodge)

His Climb and Jump skills should both reflect his -1 armor penalty. However, Jump should also have a +4 for movement greater than 30', so I have his totals as:
Climb +12
Jump +16

He can go ahead and take Shoanti as a bonus language, based on his background.

Speaking of the background...I like what you have so far, but I'd like you to tie his story into the beginning of the adventure. How did Gaxsban come to know of the expedition into Bloodsworn Vale? What made him decide to join up with the merchant's caravan? etc.

Finally, I'm not familiar with the Bag of Boulders...can you put a line or two on the sheet indicating what it does, how much it costs, etc?

That's about it. Overall, good job!

oops, shows how often I make fighters, never mind use this skill.

This I was going to leave to you. Hunting for the man named Jal is the one thing that drives Gax but it's likely been a fruitless hunt. Gax is unlikely to return home until he find this Jal person but he's also come to realize that he can't live on just his wits alone. He'll likely be looking for jobs that will take him to strange new places where a low life like Jal could be hiding. But basically you can do whatever you like for the last few years of his life.

Ashendel wrote:

I'll add that information ASAP.

M Halfling Druid/6

This skill thing is still a bit new, I apologize, but I thought I had it last time..the 2 bonus pts were for Shoanti language as per my back story THIS should be right...(I got all happy and ran off in high spirits to the other thread and forgot I wasn't 100% approved)

So. Close. To. Done.

I still have bonus skill points to spend, but I'm very close to a finished character sheet.

FINALLY DONE!

Save maybe for including info on Big Game Hunter attacks, attack stats for his daggers, that sort of thing.

I used bonus ranks on bowmaking and weapon smithing, figuring that Hoban eventually became something of a survivalist nut as he learned to be a ranger. I put two bonus ranks into Profession (cook) figuring that between his Chelaxian nanny's raising of him, and wanting some small part of his survival existence to be pleasant, and even enjoyable (actually, he's come to enjoy outdoor living quite a bit), the man knows how to cook. Nothing too fancy, but he knows how to find good herbs and spices in the wild, and understands the basic preparation of many different meats and vegetables.

Finally, I used two bonus ranks to pick up Chelaxian and Fey. I figure Chelaxian he was taught by his nanny, who figured it was important. And Fey he picked up from his first ranger teacher. There were probably a couple of languages he could pick up from this man, but he was taught Fey, so that Hoban could go right to the source (if available) when trying to understand problems in the forest or other outdoor situations.

There was some talk upthread about Chelaxian being the same as Common. Did we get a final answer on that? I'll look. If it is, I'll switch that out for some other language that the ranger taught him.

Ashendel endorsed the Erik Mona quote that Chelaxian is Common (Vel just speaks it with a drawl -- excuse me, Southern accent ;-).

My thinking is along the lines of what I saw elsewhere while searching for Erik's post -- that people actually from Cheliax may well speak Infernal as their second language.

Did a genetically manipulated virus wipe everyone out?

Is there anyone there?

I know sometimes things are figments of my imagination so I'm just checking!

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry it's been quiet the last few days. The weekend was extremely busy (Superbowl, etc.), and now I've come down with some sort of flu-like bug. I'll advance things in character as soon as I can, but for now, I'm off to bed.

Thanks for being patient. :)

Not a problem, as long as we know you haven't abandoned us!

Lament for an old codger.

I can't play D+D today
When day is done I"ll be weary, sore
My DM has gone astray
From mundane work I'll be less poor
The Gods smirk their evil smiles
Soul'll be frozen to the core
Mocking laughter for a fools trials
If I have to play Warcraft to tears I'll BORE

While we're waiting, and as I'm stuck in the makeup chair for 3 hours... a song.

Brown-Eyed Ghoul
(with apologies to Van Morrison)

Hey, where did we go
Our last AD&D game?
Our DM-- a real pro--
I give him the full blame.
We were hackin' and a-slashin', hey hey,
Leapin' and a-boundin'
In the misty graveyard dusk
With our pulses poundin'.
Saw you-- my brown-eyed ghoul.
You're my brown-eyed ghoul.

Moment I saw you
(Your fangs had that dull glow),
I knew that you had me
Paralyzed, sweet and slow.
Lurking in the moonlight, cacklin',
Rising from behind a grave.
Drippin' and a-droolin',
You tell me it's me you crave
Oh you, my brown-eyed ghoul.
You're my brown-eyed ghoul.

As you dismember me,
I hear you sing:
[gross phlegmmy sounds]
Nya nya nya nya nya nya nya nya nya nya nya di-dah
Pgne pgne pgne pgne pgne pgne pgne pgne pgne pgne pgne di-dah
La ti da

So the you clawed your way
Right through my heart and bone.
I love your mind, it's in decay,
And my, how you can groan.

Sure, we got problems now and then
(sometimes I'm overcome by your breath)

Though you like to munch on carrion,
With my dream-ghoul, love conquers death
Oh, my brown-eyed ghoul.
You're my brown-eyed ghoul.

Male Elf Slayer Level 1

And of course, the classic...

Companions' Rhapsody
(apologies to queen, favors Dragonlance)

Tanis:
Is this my real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Why does evil close in on me?

Raistlin:
Hourglass eyes
Look up to the skies and see.
I'm not a weak mage,
I know the truth, you see.
There will be Dragons Blue, Dragons White,
Dragons Good rise to fight.
Any way the War goes
Doesn't really matter to me-- to me.

Tas:
Tanis, just look at me!
Found a purse all full of gold!
Oh, its your? Well, then I'll hold--
Tanis-- please let go of me!
I swear I thought you'd thrown it all away!

Sturm:
Tanis... hey, let him go.
He didn't mean to take your cash.
We must be off to find the Lance tomorrow.
Caramon, Caramon:
Where is Kitiara?

Kitiara:
I'm late, to meet my friends.
Sent men to the front line
Greatest power will be mine.
Good-bye, everybody, I've got to go,
Gonna leave you all behind and lead my troops.
Tanis (ooo-ooo), you deserve to die.
Behind my back you've fallen for Laurana...

Laurana:
I see a little Qualinesti in your soul,
Tanthalas, Tanthalas, can I be your companion?
The memories you're fighting--
That human woman's fright'ning me!

Tanis: Kitiara (kitiara), Kitiara (kitiara)
Kitiara Uth Matar--
A Dragonlord!

Flint:I'm just an old dwarf, everybody bugs me.
Chorus:He's just an old dwarf, but he's still family.
He'll give his life so that we can be free.

Caramon: Easy go, easy come. Everybody thinks I'm dumb.
Chorus: Car-a-mon, we do not think you're dumb.
Caramon: I'm not dumb?
Chorus: Car-a-mon, we do not think you're dumb.
Caramon: I'm not dumb!
Chorus: We do not think you're dumb.
Caramon: I'm not dumb, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum!

Oh brother Raistlin, Brother Raistlin,
Brother Raistlin, where'd you go?

Raistlin:
To Takhisis, she's a black robe set aside for me
For me...
For me!

[musical interlude, headbanging]

Sturm:
So you think evil dragons can beat the good guys?
So you think you can stab me and leave me to die?
Oh, Lady-- you might do this to me, Lady
But you'll never win out,
You'll never defeat Good and Right!

Tanis:
Paladine has triumphed
Check the skies and see.
Evil has no place here--
We're free.

That's good! I hope Ashendel's ok though...for some reason I think it's me...if I post on a thread, it's killed. BLAMMUS! If my thread killing feat is at work here I apologise!

Well, I certainly hope Ashendel is okay, and shows back up soon.

If not, I own a copy of Conquest of the Bloodsworn Vale too, though I haven't read it yet, like I have Entombed With the Pharoahs and Guardians of Dragonfall.

I could take over GMing duties, since that wouldn't actually add to my total of PbP games right now.

But let's give Ashendel a little while longer to show up, I don't want to jack his game.

Should we have a predetermined time to wait for Ashendel before abandoning the game or getting a new GM? Such as March 1st?

Yeah, maybe March 1st is a good cut off date. And that's longer than we gave Gobbo Wizard when he started a Savage Tide game and then vanished forever.

As I said before, I'm willing to take over this game. I have a copy of Bloodsworn, but I haven't read it yet.

Alternately, I *have* read Entombed with the Pharohs, and am interested in running that PbP.

But the real question is, how many of our players are still even checking in on this thread, and are they still interested in playing anything?

If we give up on Ashendel, it may be best to start the process all over again, but... Okay I'm rambling. That's my 2cp. Anybody else still reading and want to chime in? March 1 is approaching rapidly.

oh yeah, and new tip'o'the day: Don't join a play by post before checking to see if the DM ever posted at all, as people that have posted a number of times generally don't go AWOL (My apologies if Ashendel has joined the ranks of the zombie horde, from that virus thing, but hey, kill the head, that's what they say)

Still here. I'd prefer to play Bloodsworn Vale, not least because I've read Entombed with the Pharoahs fairly carefully (was thinking of running it as pbp myself during one my delusional phases).

That, and I really like Vel.
