Aramil,
Starting Wednesday, we are taking a 2 week haitus from the events of the game. When we pick up again, your character can enter then. For an ex-hitman concept, I'll look up possible skills for you tomorrow or the next day. I will warn you that this game ignores the concept of CR parity between PCs and monsters and getting into a gun fight with the more dangerous (like say the gargantuan shoggoth that just sank a ship) will only result in a quick death. :)
Having said that, a character with some basic offensive skills might be useful in the next episode. You do probably need to make sure your character has a reason a tabloid would hire him.

There are two “Classes” in Call of Cthuhlu d20. They are "Defensive" and "Offensive"
Defensive 1st level has 2 good saves (choose from Fort, Ref, Will; good saves are +2, the other is +0), +0 BAB, and +2 AC.
Offensive 1st level has 1 good save, +1 BAB, and 1 free weapon proficiency feat. Each character picks a profession which allows for eight associated skills +3 skills of a characters choice.
If you pick a profession, I'll give you a list of skills associated with that profession. Typical Professions include Antiquarian, Archaelogist, Artist/Musician, Blue collar Worker, Criminal, Priest, Soldier, Technician, Businessman, Writer/Reporter.
If you want the writer/reporter profession – the associated class skills are:
craft (photography)
craft (writing)
Diplomacy
Gather Information
Innuendo
Knowledge (any one)
Knowledge (any one)
Research
Sense Motive
+3 of the players choice.Characters start with 32 skill points (+int. bonus x4)
Abilities are either 4d6, drop the lowest, arrange as desired; or 28 point buy.
Each character will have $12,000 starting cash to buy this or that. (laptops, cameras and the like would be appropriate). Assume modern prices. This may take a little googling or “shopping” on Amazon or the like.
Players at this point are:
Shenzoe,
Bill Lumberg
And Aramil XiloscientIn character you know that you have been hired by Hugh Rogers, owner, publisher and editor in chief of the Sunlight Scoop, a bi-weekly tabloid of a sensationalist nature. It regularly prints stories about alien abductions, elvis clones, and giraffe boy. You have either been hired as a writer or a photographer and your character should be of such a sort as would be willing to take such a job, unpublished writer, retired soldier, etc.
The game will be set in the modern era (today more or less - though not exactly in our real world of course).
Alright!!! I'll get right on it!

Having said that, a character with some basic offensive skills might be useful in the next episode. You do probably need to make sure your character has a reason a tabloid would hire him.
Maybe Rogers hired him so that we would have some protection if a crzed cult charged at us?
Welcome aboard Aramil, good to have you!

Sorry about the delay, my math class has been CRAZY!! I'll try my best to create the character over the weekend. I should be ready by August 4th at the latest.
I'm soooooooooooo sorry about this!
No problem I guess, I need to wrap up with the other two anyway but the 4th might be a problem.
Fair warning to all - I am taking a vacation from August 4th to 11th and will not have access to any computers or internet (sigh).

Short History
Avery was born and raised in London and has had a passion all his life for computers and high performance cars. In his late teens he worked as a mechanic for the McLaren Formula 1 racing team. He was in heaven, for he could work , and drive, the most powerful cars on the planet, and use some of the most powerful computers money can buy. This love of computers is what got him fired from the team, for he hacked the main computer and leaked the new car design over the internet. After getting fired from the team, he got a job as a computer technician for a large corporation. This was a totally mind-numbing job and he was driven to more useful job. He likes to dress in dark colors, mostly earth tone shirts and dark jeans. He is often known to wear a black trench coat. He talks with a strong British accent, and often confuses people by using British terms instead of American terms.
Let me know if this works, are there any class specific skills?
if you have any suggestions, questions, or criticism email me at sthomas@gmail.com

cool, I'll add it then. I think he would be a perfect tabloid reporter. Able to go where others can't go, find information people would like to keep hidden, and the like.

What is your opinon on my character? Does it work with the CoC rules? To overpowered, not powerfull enough?????

Assuming that you are going with the Offensive Class you need to drop one feat. You get two + the weapon profeciency. I would drop the lightning reflexes and plan on picking it up if you ever reach 3rd level.
I haven't sat down and figured out whether your skills balance out right but you should have 40 skill points divided up before bonuses. Maximum skill ranks is 4 at 1st level. So assuming your computer use skill is 4 +2 int. +3 for the skill focus feat, the most it could be is 9 (not 12). Likewise the driving is 4 +2 for dexterity for a maximum of +6.
Your starting Sanity is 60 and your maximum sanity is 99.
Your BAB is +1.
You need to pick one save (Fortitude, Reflex or Willpower) to make your good save.
EDIT: As for the possibility of a character being too powerful - heh. ;)

Hi Wicht (et al,...)
I'm still perusing your thread, (I've read the first 9 pages, cool. Creepy, but cool.)
I'm not a big Lovecraft fan (Only read one short story, actually, though I HAVE read a lot of spin-off/inspired stuff, and am familiar with the basics) but you seem to have done a swell job of weaving the pc's through his world without going all 'I am Eddy Kruger! You cannot run!' on them.
I'm obviously still getting a feel for this particular PbP, But I do have a couple of questions for you.
-I noticed that unlike 'normal' modern games, the PC's are NOT all special agents, or secret agents, or Hellboy team members, etc. (A very nice touch, btw) Kudos to originality! :)
I also am still trying to grab the feel for the PC 's without the usual classes to fall back on. I guess what I am asking is, what does the group NEED? A former commando? A sherlock holmes? A poor schmuck who THINKS he's the reincarnated Merlin? A Catholic Priest? (possibly ostracized because of his literal interpretation of scripture?) ;)
I guess what I'm saying is, your tale-weaving has peaked my interest. Now all i'm looking for is the bait to trap myself on your hook! :)
Any suggestions?
Time permitting, I should be able to (skim) up to where you are now by the weekend. I ahould have a feel for where you are by then!
Thanks, chat you laters!

Ragadolf |

Cool,
As you are aware, I luv and usually play casters, but that seems, counter-productive to a long life in Chuthulu-world! ;P
So I was thinking of trying something different, (for me) I have a couple of ideas,...
Let me read a few more pages, and I'll post a couple of concepts, see what you and the payers might like to see most. :)

Ragadolf |

Hey Big 'W'! ;)
Yeah, slow, but steady progress is actually being made through the pages of the Sunlight Scoop!
(Stoopid RL and it's busy-stuff to do!) ;P
I'm at the top of page 22 right now. And I must say, just READING it is enough to make me nervous! I mean, seriously, I would have died (in RL) my first trip to the buffet! ;)
Not being a big horror fan, I must confess that I was skeptical at first, but your tale-weaving and the (sometimes less-than heroic) actions of your players have convinced me, I'm in if you'll have me! :D
Since there is no 'caster' class as such (unless I want to play a VERY short-lived PC!) I will go the more physical route. Here are two concepts I am currently playing with. Please tell me what you think.
PC #1
This is the stereo-typical hard-case 'with the heart of gold' PC. He was in the military, briefly, but was kicked out for being insubordinate. (To put it politely, he could either leave, or be court-martialed.) He's just trying to make a buck until he figures out what he really wants to do, and has a decent amount of training in the skills re: computers, guns, driving, and fighting. I figure he doesn't really believe in everything that the scoop prints, but he DID see the edges of some 'hush-hush' things in the military. And while not a card-carrying conspiracy nut, he is willing to believe that there are probably MANY things he doesn't know about that the Government is covering up.
Depending on how I build him, he could either have a LOT of Sanity (very self-assured, hard to rattle, high Wis) or very little (very jump in first, ask questions later, low wisdom).
PC#2-
And now for something a little different,...
Take your basic Monk, make his monastery part of a group of 'watchers' that keep an eye out for 'strange things', and sends out people to investigate. The higher-ups KNOW what is out there, and try to prepare their monks, but do not even try to tell them everything. As a general rule the agents do not try to actually "do" anything about what they find, they are simply there to observe and report back. But obviously, as in any good book, they always seem to end up in the middle of it! He could take a job with the Scoop as a photographer when he finds they have a knack for reporting 'strange stuff' (real or otherwise, it is his job to find out!)
This would be a very modern 'monk', and know about/how to use cell phones, cameras, computers, etc. But as he was raised in the monastery, he would be very out-of-place in American social situations. (Most of his expectations of society would be from TV shows!) I see him as a modern 'Kane' from the original Kung Fu TV series. :)
What do you think Wicht? Will one of those work? I think I could have fun with either of them.

Ragadolf |

Either one of those would work. The first seems more plausible but the second might make for more interesting role-playing.
wow, perfect timing! ;P (On my checking of the posts!)
I agree, the first is FAR more 'plausible' (At least as close to 'realistic' as we're gonna get in a CoC game!) ;P
But I come up with the second, and it sounded like too much fun not to ask! :)

Ragadolf |

Hey Wicht & et. al,... ;)
Just a note to let you know that I AM still here, and interested.
RL is kickin' my hinie lately, (And it looks like it MIGHT slow up at the very end of the month!) ;)
I'll try to post up a character proposal this week. I'll need clarifications on certain feats, etc. as it looks like CoC & D20 Modern don't QUITE match up on everything.
(I have one question right now, are we keeping the stealth skills separate as previous, or combining Hide and Move Silent into Stealth as current?)
Thank you! Chat you soon!

Ragadolf |

Background:
Background:
Chun Kiat Lin is a member of a small, secret sect of shaolin monks in Tibet. This particular sect is very special, as they know what is out there. They go to great pains to try and find out all they can about IT. But they consider themselves watchers only. (They have seen what happens to those monks who ‘got involved’.) Although, occasionally, when things get desperate, they try to intervene.
Though small, the sect is a secretive collaboration between many temples, and they recruit potential members from all of the temples in Tibet and across the world. This temple keeps ‘in touch’ with the modern world, (How else to observe the influence of ‘the other’?) and it’s members are familiar with computers, the internet, cell phones, etc. Photography is considered to be an important skill, as it provides documentation of what a monk has seen without being influenced by that person’s personal feelings or reactions, as a simple report would be.
Chun Kiat Lin was ‘recruited’ when he was 6 from a temple where his parents had left him because they could not afford to care for him. He was quickly noted as being exceptionally bright, and having uncommon wisdom for one his age. Unfortunately, having wisdom and using it are two different things. Chun was continuously in trouble for using his mental prowess for getting out of work and into, well, trouble.
Though close to a black belt by American standards, he is considered a mediocre martial artist at best by his peers. However he makes up for this in his ability to read and research obscure facts, and put various pieces of occult lore together to get a picture. He remembers almost everything he reads, and while he shows an ‘unhealthy’ interest in things occult and arcane, the masters have not (yet) tried to stop his research in these areas, as he shows considerable strength of will, and no signs of being affected by his studies. (Though they keep close watch on him.)
Recently, Chun’s antics have become an annoyance, and the Masters decided that perhaps a little ‘seasoning’ is in order. Chun is being sent out into the world to gain experience, (and get him out of the way for little bit). He is considered too green to trust with any missions of importance, so he has been sent out on a ‘fact-finding’ mission among the newspapers of America. Particularly the ones that seem to report on odd disturbances that the government seems to try and cover up. Are they really getting ‘inside scoops’, or are they simply making up stories to sell to the masses? This is Chun’s current job.
Let me know what you think. If it's too much, I'll go back to the basics! :)
Laters~

Ragadolf |

Ragadolf, story looks alright - I'll look over the character more fully later today (and get back to you on feats and skills). One thing I notice right of is that Maximum Sanity should be 99.
Cool , thx!
I built it with the online char builder I linked above.
I suppose that the program means "Max Sanity = 5 X Wisdom," not 'Maximum possible to have'. :)
There will be too many skills/points, wasn't sure if you were sticking with '3.5ish' or combining things like PF did with Stealth and Perception.

Advancing to 2nd level:
You can reroll 1s for hps.
You have 8+int bonus skill points to add to your skills (up to maximum skill ranks - ie. 5 skill points at level 2)
BAB will go up by 1.
Kenny and Carlotta each get 4 sanity points for surviving and rescuing the girls. Clearly evil can be overcome is the lesson learned (and airforce bombs seem to work as well).

Re-rolling for HP: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
I assume that the increased Sanity is added to the current tally and not the maximum. Is that so?

Sorry Wicht!
I was busy last week, then got a last-minute chance to attend a stage combat workshop and re-up some certifications, then the requisite family Easter stuff,...
Um,.. I'm back! :)
If your still interested in having me, (I have been a bit insane/busy lately, I would understand if you weren't!)
But if you are, I shall try to post TONITE a character!
I'll stick with the ex-military guy instead of the monk if that's alright?
See you soon, and Happy (after) Easter!

Hey all. I've had a bit of a hectic week here so I've been a bit slow getting to this. New characters are going to report to a small airport in Arizona where they will be ready to fly out to Alaska with our two 'veterans.' You should have time to clean up your characters en route. Just post on the game thread that you are waiting at the airport and you can say hi to each other if you want.

John Westbrook |

Thanks Wicht,
No worries, I know ALL about the 'hectic week',
heck, sometimes I think it's my name! ;)
When you (or anyone else) gets a chance, could you take a look at the PC and see what you think? The builder I used didn't actually give details about feats and such, so I'm not sure why 'Martial Arts' isn't giving me a better unarmed strike on my combat details. Any help appreciated!
See you inside!

![]() |

First things first - Maximum sanity is 99 until you get ranks in Cthulhu Mythos Skill.
Second here is the combat martial arts feat from the d20 modern srd - I assume its the same: As you can see, it affects the damage you do, not your to hit roll.
Combat Martial Arts
Prerequisite: Base attack bonus +1.
Benefit: With an unarmed strike, the character deals lethal or nonlethal damage (the character’s choice) equal to 1d4 + the character’s Strength modifier. The character’s unarmed attacks count as armed, which means that opponents do not get attacks of opportunity when the character attacks them unarmed. The character may make attacks of opportunity against opponents who provoke such attacks.
Normal: Without this feat, a character deals only 1d3 points of nonlethal damage. Unarmed attacks normally provoke attacks of opportunity, and unarmed combatants cannot normally make attacks of opportunity.
Do we assume the handgun is registered? And how do you inconspicuously carry around an aluminum bat? Or does it get stowed with luggage normally? :)

Hey guys, sorry for my spotty posting. A week and a day ago Steve Russell of Rite Publishing asked me to "help" with a patron project and now I'm trying to put together a book for him in 60 days. I've had to do a lot of studying and reading to get caught up to where the project is as its been going for close to a year. Which has severely curtailed my Paizo board browsing. I have a better handle on it now and aside from much writing to do, I should be able to schedule this game back in some better.
