I enjoyed the Thieves' World, but I'd really have to trust a DM who'd run a game in Sanctuary. Even though Sanctuary seems like a typical setting for a D&D adventure, with wizards, warriors, thieves and gods and their servants, the atmosphere is so essential to anyone running it. Magic almost always has some sort of downside. Politics are lightning-fast and deadly. Life is cheap, and people don't come back from the dead. If you're playing in Sanctuary and it ends up feeling like, for instance, Greyhawk or Waterdeep (which I know have their own dangers, but each has a different feel for certain) something is dead wrong. With a DM I could trust, I'd salivate at the thought of playing in Thieves' World, by Ils!

I read the first 9 books anyhow or maybe 12; will have to recount if I see them on my shelf or in one of my boxes of books; also have the Thieves World rp setting box with all the stats and map of sanctuary. have read the books several times; gotta love a series with a tavern called the Vulgar Unicorn.

I loved that the ruler of santuary is called Kitty Kat hehe; so many great short stories strung together; wish it was more novel like, but still was pretty good. Great characters galore in this series, only thing I didnt like was some of the twists that a new author would put on another authors character; I guess it was with permission, but still.

I only read the recent anthology of the first two books called First Blood. Some of the stories were quite good; others only average. Any news on a second compilation?
Personally I found the themes (rape, child abuse, torture, mass murder) in Thieves' World too grim for a roleplaying game. I wouldn't want to roleplay any of them.

It's definitely not for everybody. Very grim, very dark setting. But with the right DM, it could be a great campaign!
