KEJR, I've decided we can talk about Races and Classes, because the book's allready out, so it journeys out of the realm of "speculation," and into the realm of "opinion."

Well, you can all relax for about a month.

Then D&D Experience will arrive, and the debate/discussion/arguments can start all over again as people reprint all of their thoughts - this time with "facts." (I use facts loosely because anything learned at D&D Experience can be changed before final release - even if it is unlikely to be done.)

And hell, if any Paizo staffers go and play in the 4th Edition games, they can get their first glimpse of the 4th Edition rules!
(Alright, I admit it. That was a cheap shot.)

Yeah, I've been "relaxed" about my posts too, because I've not so much been arguing a side or another, but giving examples . . . like that I've had players actually use profession skills in my campaigns. No, won't do any good, but its true.

Liberty's Edge

I'm falling off the wagon bad. I'm passed out in a ditch by the side of the road.

Part Time Sorceress don't count as 4e, does it?

Heh, nope, she was actually writing about 3.5 in that book.

Although I do find it ironic that all through that book she is talking about how great D&D is and how much she loves it and she loves this and that and the other thing about it.

And when her column starts for the DDI, she rapidly realizes how horrible 3.5 was for limiting how she played her sorceress and how unfair 3.5 was for making her team mates care about her and try to protect her, and that 4th edition is the best thing ever.

I know I try to shy away from real world comparisons, because this is suppose to be heroic fantasy, but the whole time she was complaining about the other people in the party having to unfairly protect her, all I could think about is that in the real world, in the military, you have to protect your medics and your communication people all the time, because their job isn't to shoot bad guys.

So I guess it made sense that if your role is to not wear armor and carry a greatsword, but you might be able to disintegrate that nasty giant or dragon that would otherwise kill the party if they just try to kill it slowly by sticking it with sharp pointy objects, isn't that just performing your party role?

But I digress.

No, I get it. In Aubrey's Eberron campaign I made a cleric purposely with NO COMBAT UTILITY WHATSOEVER. It's challenging, and fun, but I think it hurts my manhood sometimes.

No more so than that shade of lipstick you like to wear so much. What's it called again, Fruti-tastic?

So Heathy, I gotta confess. First, I always thought your name was actually Heath Ansson. The fact that your screen name is actually Heathan's Son has completely rocked my world. It's like I've been mispronouncing your name.

Second, I always thought we were square on 4e. I just got done riling up the latest arrogant anti-4e'r, but for the most part, that's most of what I'm doing these days - taking a couple pot shots at the really agressive a&*+#$&s and leaving the rest to lock horns as they will (besides, crosswiredmind is really doing a lot of the work for me). When you posted here to call me a thorn, it bummed me out.

Anyway, just wanted to get that off my chest. If you think I'm going to far, please let me know.

That's so going to ruin your image. Has your PR person been on vacation?

Liberty's Edge

Sebastian, dude, I'm sorry as f#$+.

My refrigerator hasn't worked in 2 weeks, and I think I tend to overreact to a lot of stuff. First, Christmas week, the guy thought it needed a compressor. Next, New Year's week, it needs two more parts. I have to get up at six every morning to buy milk. I only thank God it's under warranty, because a compressor is $700.

Even when you do piss me off occasionally, I'm over it in an hour or less. What helps me is I know I piss people off too. I value our crumudgeony friendship.

Well yeah, but...

Spoiler:

IT'S A TRAP!

I know you were talking to Heathy, and I don't want to interpose myself into that, and I'm not sure of which incident you refer, so I'm just dumb like that, but if it means anything, you've been kind of my poster child for someone I would rather discuss 4th edition with, since you generally have some reasons that you are willing to share for your opinions. Yeah, you can be blunt, but you've never come across as "I'm too good to waste my time explaining myself," the way some posters have.

And since you don't automatically respond to every 4th edition dissident by calling them irrational, the few times you may have said I'm (or people with my opinion) being irrational, it has a lot more effect as it makes me take a step back and think about if I'm so riled up about other things that my current opinion isn't as well reasoned as it could be.

Sure, there are times when I think you've pushed it a bit, but not nearly as badly as some others, and I know I've gone completely hysterical myself from time to time.

Anyway, I'll back out and let you and Heathy have a moment whenever . . .

No worries. I just wanted to make sure we were cool. And sorry to hear about the fridge. That sucks ass, particularly with such young kids in the house. I hope you get that sucker fixed soon.

But I'm still bummed about the name.

Liberty's Edge

I take it back.

I'm going to have to go back and delete all these posts to preserve my image, but I guess I'll say thanks KE and ditto. I've been impressed at how you've handled the changes, particularly the dignity with which you've weathered the changes to FR. You're one of the guys (along with Fake Healer and some others) that got me to step back from the "kill the anti-4e crowd" in the first place and I appreciate that.

Okay, nice posting is over. If anyone needs me, I'll be over here killing puppies.

See ladies and gentlemen, this is the kinda exchanges that made me fall in love with these boards. It's not that hard. To quote Brad from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, "Learn it. Live it. Love it."

Sorry Sebastian, just quoting you so you I have a record. You're a lawyer, you understand having evidence and all. Next time you run for office in Nessus, somebody might just have to keep an eye out of a certain knight lest these comments fall into the hands of the Infernal Election Board.

Liberty's Edge

Sebastian, you're my damn argument sensei. I needed one, bad, and "poof" there's a master of lawyer fu to teach me free-like.

You know how much kung fu fights I win with "I'm glad you rode up on your white horse, Marshall?" Gaaaah. Priceless.

I have to remember that when the fights is going down, not to punch too hard cos you're not made of wood.

Okay Heathy, I need to get back on the wagon. I don't want to get back into the habit of defending the fact that I have an opinion, and actually arguing back when people say that I'm either lying about what I'm going to do or that I'm some mentally deranged corner case that they can dismiss as "non standard."

Me? What did I do? Please elaborate, I need to build self-worth so I can sell me off for a much higher return.

I'm late joining this thread.. and it seems like it's mostly played out. However, I sort of touched upon it this morning in a reply to gentlemen named Sean who was discouraged that he couldn't talk about 4th edition in a constructive manner.

Prior to this, I'd been making WoW jokes, which got us on a serious discussion.

Anyway, I wanted to share this..

I wrote:

To change the subject, in reference to your not being able to discuss 4th edition in this community, which used to be so cool... I'm not going to disagree with you. Surprise! And when I stop clowing around with fake avatars making WoW jokes, I am sincerely sympathetic. I can see where it would be really frustrating. There are customers and posters on this board who have an agenda, no doubt about it. For whatever (completely valid for them) reason, they don't want see the change.. or they accept it only begrudgingly. Many would like to outright stop Paizo from making the switch, and have promised to end their patronage if it happens. There's nothing wrong with them doing that (it's their money and their decision), but it does create a negative atmosphere..

I can't change it, but I can validate that it's probably frustrating for you and others, and it's not your imagination.

Although.. I think things will improve around here once the decision is made, one way or another. It's the "not knowing" that drives this poster politicking. The chance that it "might not happen". Once we get past that, people might be willing to engage 4th Edition for what it is, and not what it might be.

Unfortunately, we're going to have a period of 'radio silence' from Paizo as they analyze the OGL. That is a legal necessity.

Once Paizo can speak, I don't think they will hesitate to do so- just to release the tension. Then there will be a brief intense outcry (from one side or the other), and then I think you'll see the tenor of the board go back to the way it used to be.

Since I'm here either way, 4th edition or 3.5, I'll gladly share my popcorn with you until that day.

So.. I guess I'm saying, I'll share my popcorn with you guys too. The show's almost over. Just another month I wager...
