STAP PbP for Serious Players

Gamer Connection

If there is enough interest I want to run a STAP PbP.

Purpose of the Game is to test two ideas I have:
  • Starting all characters out as commoners
  • Playtesting a gunslinger class I made up

Gunslinger? Yup - the player that takes on this class will get the relavent details, but all of that is for later...

I need 5 players and the party needs to have:
  • Rogue (consider wilderness variant)/A multiclass rogue/Scout or some such
  • Melee - somebody with a weapon standing in front of the monster
  • Arcane - spellslinger
  • Divine - healer, but druid would work out too
  • Gunslinger!!!

I would like to see a lot of role playing - I will award Hero Points at random

  • I will post at least once day, but probably once in the morning and once in the evening
  • If you know you are going to miss a day or more please let everyone knon in the discussion thread - I would rather you pop in and say "RL is going to keep me out all weekend" then wonder if you're ok
  • All non-game stuff should go in the Discussion thread
  • Everyone should check the Discussion thread daily
  • Everyone should be familiar with the details found in the Player's Guide

    character generation
  • You will start at zero-level: a commoner.
  • Only SRD races (including variants) with the exception of half-orc - no half-orcs are allowed.
  • Modified Elite Array for abilities = {15,14,13,12,10,10}
  • Bonus zero-level feat taken from the STAP Player's Guide.
  • I would prefer you're skills and feat being justified by your backstory.
  • Max hit points
  • You must indicate your desired first level class - I will provide special rules for the spellcasters
  • I prefer SRD but might consider other options

    important house rules
  • paladins and clerics may choose to turn Outsiders instead of Undead
  • Half-elves are considered to have the human subtype for purposes of game mechanics and as such are not eligible for elemental variant-races.

We will be using InvisibleCastle but I doubt I'll really ever verify your rolls - you're only cheating yourself if you choose to manipulate fate.

If you are interested please post your character idea via a detailed backstory. If multiple people write up a similar party-role, I'll pick one and let everyone else write up something new. Remember, everyone will be starting out as a commoner and then start at first level after gaining 1000xps (or so).

If you're curious a gunslinger mechanically looks like a cross between a spell-less bard and a rogue. Gun rules will sit between the DM guide, Ptolus, and various third-party PDF products. Gunpowder is well known to alchemists and some wizards. While powerful, it is no more so than a crossbow or spellcasting and takes a dedicated person to truly reap its benefits.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

While I'm not interested in playing (okay, so I am interested but I've got too much on my plate already) I would like to know more about this Gunslinger class you made up. Would you mind emailing me the details of that class and, if it isn't too much trouble, the rules and stuff you've put together fpr the guns? My email address is wraith6@raresteeds.com

I would be interested in joining this PbP. I will post a character concept and backround as soon as I can. I would like to fill the Druid slot of the party when we advance to first level.

Dark Archive

Hi. I'd like to play the swordsman of the group.

I'm interested. I'll give the gunslinger a shot. No pun intended.

I have always wanted to do this. I have invisoned a young lad who developes into a sorceror and has to deal with the effects of his magical puberty. I haven't DM'ed or Played in the Savage Tide so I will read over the Players Guide and post a more detailed background if you will have me. My concept for the character has always been human but perhapse I'll mix it up and be a halfling.

Sovereign Court

I'm interested in joining, but I know you offered some spots to those on the waiting list in Radavel's RotR game, so by all means give them the chance to play first. I'll be happy to sit on the waiting list for this game, and have no problem playing the rogue (or scout) if you still have spots open.

Dark Archive

Considering the interest shown by our fellow Paizonians, I feel that I must bow out to give others a chance to join a PBP.

DitheringDM, see you in Cry Havoc's game.

It's great to see some interest!

Everyone, be sure to reread my campaign ideas in the OP and please post your concept character's backstory and let me know if you have in particular questions.

I'll start a Discussion thread once the stories start rolling in.

Oh, go ahead a post something even if you think it's covered - I like to see what people come up with and alternates may be needed.

Show me your rogue-ish backstory! Rogues and scouts are welcome (but no ninja's please - I don't hate ninjas it's just I already have to deal with one in my Red Hand campaign).

Ok, my backstory is in my profile - it's quite long, but after reading the Player's Guide today I got all sorts of ideas and really started thinking about the city and living there. Now I hope I can play in this one, because I really like Sasserine and the concept I created! :)

(But please still let the others play if they respond.)

Regarding crunch:
Fire elf, taking Rogue at 1st, possibly multiclassing into Scout later.
Feat: Water Rat (Azure District)
Skills: Listen, Spot, Climb, Swim, Hide, Move Silently

Not that you have to mimic this style, but please check this character out to see what kinds of information everyone should consider including. Use spoiler tags where ever you would like.

Here is my backstory.

Spoiler:
Summer's father was a lazy man who spent most of his time drunk or recovering from being drunk, so he had pretty much no involvement in her life. She held her father in disdain because he was so lazy and she had always had the need to be doing soemthing. She left when she was 12 to look for an apprenticship with someone of any trade. Summer found a herbalistic healer willing to take her in and teach her the trade. This was the first real kind of role model she had ever had so Summer tried to emulate the healer as much as possible. The healer named Elaine had a total lack of faith in human nature and was very cynical about the world. Following Elaine as a role model compounded by the laziness and worthlessness of her father gave Summer the same attitude toward the world as Elaine. She is interested in using herbs as healing but always makes a few unkind comments along with the healing.

I plan on playing Summer as still an assistant in the shop until we level up then taking a level in druid. I will try to play the character as cynical, sarcastic and completely jaded.
Will this work and is this enough backstory?

Excellent! I plan on waiting another day (hoping to drum more excitment) before getting the Discussion thread up. In the meanwhile would you kindly post your STAP feat?

ArchLich and MythrilDragon, I'd love to see your initial character concepts/backstories...

Radavel, so far we're still down a melee player...but I am going to give it at least all day tomorrow to see if there are any other takers if you're still on the fence.

Just give me a buzz... here

I have created an alias for my character I will post with it so you can see the details and the back ground. I am hoping to develope into a sorceror and perhapse some later levels in bard. I did make one slightly off rule change that you will need to approve. To mimic a theater background I chose Rapier as a weapon, I know its not simple but it makes sense for a character growing up around the opera house. If you don't think it fair to trade up could I take it as a 1/2 profficancy cutting the negative to -2 instead of -4 for using an untrained weapon. That could be justified by only being trained as if the fighing was only supposed to look real. If not let me know and I will swap it to dagger.
Thanks

My character concept.

I'll let the rapier stand with the -2 unless you want to spend a feat on it, but what is the "Knack for Magic" feat?

Do you still need a cleric?

I will be posting my character and background today soon.
Question: Can I take a look at the gunslinger class to make sure I plan my feats appropriately?

Doh! Never mind. I misread a previous post.

Here he is, Gunslinger to be. Slightly incomplete (still need one feat and one language).
I should be able to post twice daily except on Sundays (once/day).

A combat-focused cleric might not be bad, but he/she would be the main meat-shield. Keep that in mind if you want to write an idea.

I'll post the class details later tonight...for now think spell-less bard/anti-scout with some fighter feats thrown in for flavor.

Anti-scout? Hmmm, I wonder what that means.

Just consider me "waiting in the wings". Even if no one else signs up to play the lead fighter role, Radavel already raised his voice. I will gladly yield to him.

I am afraid I am still working on my character. Right know I just have the concept. I am also not really familiar with the Players Guide but I will do some reading and get back to you soon.

Knack for magic is in the Savage Tides players guide, its the bonus one I choose per your opening post. It gives a +2 on spot checks and a 1/day use of Light, Detect Magic, and Prestidigitation as a 1st level caster.

I picked Magical Apptitude to reflect his latent power that his is going to be superstisious of. He fears the arcane but as a buding sorceror he's oozing it.

I'll go with the -2 to rapier. I like the idea that he is thinks he is "trained to fight" when he is actually only trained to look like he knows how to fight. But at 15 you think you know everything.

For magic Prat has latent and active magical power but doesn't know it or belive in it as of yet. Things just happen around him that he can not explain.

Two questions.

1. How much starting money do commoners get.
2. the SRD link you have shows that the commonor gets one weapon, but dosen't mention any other feats. With your OP yoiu are giving us a bonus ST feat. All Humans get a bonus feat. The question is do we get to pick a 1st character feat or do we have to wait until we attain a class level?

Here is the Discussion Thread.

Please move all character questions and out-of-game talk to the above.

FYI, I'm still looking for a melee character...post in this thread if you're interested!

You want me to get started on the melee character? Just read the Savage Tide Player's Guide and have an idea for a fighter.
