What gives? Suddenly, near the end, the Living Greyhawk site is posting articles on the Doomgrinder, along with aprocryphal references to the end of the world.
I can't help but wonder -- what is WotC up to?
Yeah, I was wondering that same thing. Maybe it's their way to prepare for the 4th ed. changes to the setting. You know, the FR way (aka, let's nuke it and let Boccob sort it out...).
It won't affect my homegrown GH world. I dealt w/ the Doomgrinder already in 2nd edition :)

Among the Living Greyhawk enthusiasts that I talk to, rumors tell of widespread upheaval coming to the lands of Greyhawk. The campaign is coming to a close, so apocalyptic confrontations are expected as the various plotlines are wrapped up.
I am not pleased to see Living Greyhawk going away (Living Realms isn't likely to hold much interest for me), but I respect the campaign staff's desire to see things go out with a bang instead of a whimper.

Were the piece about The Doomgrinder not written by Creighton Broadhurst, I would dismiss it all without giving it a second thought.
I don´t know who Tim Sech is, who wrote End of Days, but this sounds to me as if Wizards plan to let Greyhawk end in a big crash, and perhaps leave the world unplayable afterwards officially.
If it is just a "normal" upheaval, ok, this does happen every so often to the game worlds to sell new material. I can live with that and would look at the new direction Greyhawk takes and decide if I like it or not.
OTOH, if they reduce GH to cinders (Waldorf returns, finally!), they will lose me for good. That would mean that we would never see any official product for GH ever again. At that moment, I would be very upset, and seriously consider never, ever touching any new WotC stuff again.

I'm with you completely on this. This would alienate me permanently.

This option is far more intriguing. It would suggest an interest from WotC in where Greyhawk is going, and would give them something of a clean slate with which to move in any direction they might like.
The first option I would consider profoundly stupid -- pissing off customers and long-time fans for no economic benefit. The second option might very well make me buy every GH-friendly 4/e product they publish.
Time will tell :)

They tried to have things go out with a bang in the region of Bissel a couple years back. All we got was a transgender necromancer who stole her brother's identity.
I don't like where this Dommgrinder stuff is going myself. I think they truly mean to blow things up. This way they can build the future Greyahwk with the 4.0 rules.
I highly doubt that this would work. 4.0 is going to be a disaster.

Let's hope it's just a minor upheaval in the grand scheme of things. After all, much of the Flanaess was ripped up by the Greyhawk Wars already; it'd be too soon to do something on that large a scale all over again. Then again, I'd just ignore it if they did nuke it, and they wouldn't be getting any money from me w/ their radically new setting. Assuming they're thinking about bringing it back in the 1st place.

Big changes in Greyhawk?
Like the death of a demon prince, leaving his realm up for grabs?
Or the death of Dragotha?
Or the short return of Kyuss?
Or Demogorgon's influence spreading across the Material Plane?
All of this with Tenser's finger in the pie?
Hmmm.
If the Doomgrinder does usher in a change to Greyhawk, let's not down play Paizo's part!
Seriously, though, maybe they want to advance the timeline by a few decades or so.

I´ve got no problems with changes, as long as they leave the world playable. The changes you mentioned have a big impact, sure, but the world is still recognizable as Greyhawk. Now, if the change the face of Oerth so much it is some different beast altogether or even not viable as a setting at all anymore (which would be a boneheaded move, but then...), that where I will be really upset. Bad enough I even think this might be a way WotC could go...

It' a big windmill/warmachine that soem crazy derro got a hold of and drove into the lake, If I remember the module correctly.
Yeah, well, that was the story of the module Doomgrinder. I did not like this one at all. The idea of Doomgrinder as some kind of countdown had so much potential, but the treatment in this module was way below par. This is one module you should only buy for the sake of completeness.

My impression is they're ignoring any consequences of the module and resetting things to serve a different purpose.
Following canon, the Doomgrinder should have gotten on the move several years ago (under the control of the derro) and made a beeline for Greyhawk City. Presumably, and hopefully, it was stopped before it gotten there, having left some devastation in its path.

I agree 100%. What had enormous potential became a joyride by evil, obnoxious, bald dwarves.
The Greyhawk modules of the period were often somewhat disappointing efforts at resurrecting the campaign. I thought Doomgrinder was nearly the worst.
IMO :)

Sorry folks, what's a Doomgrinder?
The Doomgrinder is a black stone windmill standing some miles to the east of the city of Greyhawk. Legend has it that its seldom-moving sails are somehow counting down towards the end of the world.
I found the explanation given in the Doomgrinder module to be rather silly, and inconsistent with the previous history. So I ignored it. In my campaign, it was the prison of Tharizdun.
