Character Help

3.5/d20/OGL

Here's the thread to come up with cool, memorable characters! Feel free to take ideas from this thread!
Here are mine:

  • Angry at world, spiteful

  • Penchant for collecting trophies

  • Considers spells to be enslaved creatures

  • And, yes, I do know that a drunk 2 year old that's fighting a trasque could come up with these ideas.

    Ummm... Little help here?

Athasian Hobbit on the wrong game world, recipes in hand.
Frat-boy determined to 'partay' his way through every inn, tavern, dungeon, wilderness trek and demi-gawd smackdown in his adventuring career (likely shortly after character creation...).

    Scarab Sages

An avid collector of spores, molds and fungi.

An elf, allergic to the great outdoors.

    *Has lost his memory

*has strange dreams of himself doing things he cannot do (i.e. cast spells if he is a fighter type)which are actually his long lost twin

*was raised by <insert goblinoid tribe here>

    *is mute( or blind etc...)

Sorceror based on charisma, so you have a charasmatic playboy(or girl) who dreams of opening a hedonistic resort.

A fighter who uses double daggers. (Strange no?)

A LG rogue/assassin (I know breaking the rules) who works for the state but not officially.

A cleric of the god of death who comforts the dieing. Letting them know it is alright and how the shall find their after life. One who makes people value life and stops people from cheating death.

A urban druid who takes care of his rat, dog, cat, horse and mule brethrin. He pushes in the political arena for more animal rights, more park land and shows the population how to keep their resources renewable. (I call it "Hippie in the Mist".)

A druid/ranger who hunts down people who abuse their pets & familiars. They care about children (as they view them as animals) but not about adults.

A monk that uses subdual damage on people/creatures because he has vowed not to kill.

A reformed villian trying to prove his worth while avoiding the people they had wronged who are out for revenge.

Yeah, I had that idea. Here's my variation of that:

  • Don't write a background for your character. Instead, don't tell anybody what it is. Have fun watching them pull their hair out as you give them evasive answers, like, 'how old am I? old enough to live a day, but not to live a century.', or 'my father was a man, but my mother was a woman', designed to confuse them, or make them feel guilty. Then, in the final showdown, make it up on the fly, as interesting as possible. Reveal the character's history, name, everything!

  • This was pretty interesting to read KC. Generally, I don't name my characters until they've lived a few sessions, let alone detail backstory et al. Most of the time I'll ad-hoc it as I go, barring those elements that spring to mind during chargen. A nice idea that!

has one arm--keeps dismembered hand in a jar--it sometimes moves

Here are two characters that I am looking forward to play (both built for PbP here, that seem to have "stalled")

LN Half-Orc Monk. An Ascetic who seeks to win over his small town (Sandpoint) through his rigorous self discipline and show them that Half-Orcs are more than simple barbarians.

TN Human Wizard. (Actually a cross between CN and LG) Physically and Emotionally frail (Low STR and CHA) orphan who has always been beaten up, bottom of the totem pole, general whipping boy. Seeks personal power to protect himself, but is fiercely loyal to those he calls a friend.

Damn! Now I'm itching for a chance to play either of these in a RL game.

One of my friends had a unique character that he played in one of my games. A Gnome mage who had a strong driving desire to catalogue every magic item in the world. He would snatch up the item, pop out his magic hole, climb down in, open a dusty tome, and record everything about it. Once he was finished, he would turn the item over to the party. I guess with the new fourth addition, this particular character will not get to play...

One of my players has these for his latest character...

*Can read and write the Thassilon language but was never taught it.

*Has an "imaginary" friend that gives him advice and sometimes knows more than his imagination should know.

A Catfolk rogue/invisible blade (inspired by Fritz Leiber's Gray Mouser) who wears a green cloak, mask and hood. The streets whisper of the Green Ghost...

    *Squeak*

    Here are a few more:
  • The dismembered hand, but with a claw on his arm

  • An awakened animal (you'd need special rules, but I've always thought it'd be cool

  • A druid who used to belong to a secret evil cult of druids calling themselves 'The Snakes'. he left the group, so they are trying to silence him before he gives away secrets. He has a scar in the shape of an 'S', which is really the symbol of the cult. the cult believes that The Great Serpent will rise up and destroy civilization*
  • *I'm going to use this one

I've actually done both of these:

CN human sorcerer with 18 Cha, basically the consummate ladies' man. Got killed, though.

LG halfling fighter with 16 Str, in full plate wielding two daggers. Each dagger dealt 1d3+3 damage, for a minimum of four damage per hit.

Question: how would one work a low-Dex bard? Would they have to multiclass to be effective?

Concentrate on Int and Cha for Bardic Knowledge, Bardic Music, skills, and spells. A low-Dex bard can be played as a battlefield control/buff/heal spell caster that acts as the party's linguist, negotiator, and sage.

I'm hoping to do a cleric like this in the next campaign, looking forward to it too. Gotta finish the current run first, though . . .

I've done the reformed villain thing before with my old alu-fiend. It's my favorite character of all time. I miss playing her . . . .

my sister made up a halfling fighter who uses a shovel and a frying pan as weapons, and skips through dungeons. Quite funny roleplaying

The comment about the awakened animal got me thinking.

How about an awakened animal druid with a Monkey / Ape animal companion. Grab a hat of disguise for your animal companion, and all of a sudden, you have an animal druid with a "human" animal companion. Should open up some interesting role playing scenarios when you get to town, and you have to stay outside, but your animal companion can sleep in the inn.

Whoa... that would be kinda cool...

    Hmmm...
    Another:
  • A resourceful character, maxed in Int, Wis, and Cha, and did weird things like stampeding cattle, throwing pies at wizards, that sort of thing. praise to those who realize where these ideas for actions come from!
