Spoiler:
I took the fact he would give only 50 GP reward if his boar hunt offer was refused as a base line. Since an ordinary light horse is already 75 GP each, I gave my players basic riding horses (and a riding dog for the halfling), with only basic saddle. And to be fair, the gnome druid with a riding dog companion got leather barding instead, which is a lot cheaper but a lot more useful combat-wise than ordinary riding horses. I guess 75 GP average gift is enough for 1st level PCs, especialy when compared to the 12gp each they were going to get if they refused.
