Wiki or not to wiki

Rise of the Runelords

The Concordance RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

Does anyone use a wiki to document the campaign as it develops? For example, if the PC of the paladin builds a private shrine or meets a wandering begger that he befriends or any of a thousand things that might have an impact of the game later in the path, how do you remember it?

I use a wiki myslef.

But i was wondering if anyone can recommend a better wiki than the one i use (which is TiddlyWiki <http://www.tiddlywiki.com/>).

Well if you want to get into PHP there are better ones, but it usually involves a good web host and knowledge of PHP to run. Yours uses Javascript, so any web host and just about anyone can use it.

If web stuff isn't one of your hobbies, that looks like a good way to go.

I wiki whenever I get a chance. TiddlyWiki is great, so is WikiOnAStick, if you don't have access to a webserver.

Tiddlywiki is GREAT for taking your own notes, journal, in-game help, etc. If you want to share it with your players and let them edit it (as my fellow players and I do), use MediaWiki, which is the same as Wikipedia. But you'll need a PHP server with SQL database capability.

I used one once and it went great!

I saw WikiOnAStick in an article, but didn't get to read it all. Would it work to put Apache, PHP and WOAS on a flash drive and hand it out to the players? If so, would you get the information back on the "original wiki"? Or a link ; )

We use PBWiki to keep track of stuff for our game. You can set up a wiki for free, or pay for extra features and/or (IIRC) lack of ad support on your pages. There are also various plugins available from the PBWiki admin section; we imported our Google Calendar to a page at the wiki that also gives an overview of how we schedule games and when we plan to play, etc.

The other players in my group are mainly new to the game, and haven't typically kept track of notes or character histories or anything like that, but once I went through and set up sections for adventure notes and characters they all took to it right away and have been working on character backgrounds and journals for our new Eberron campaign.

So that's nice :)

If you're looking to have a portable LAMP setup, look at XAMPP. If you're looking at collaborative updates, a more traditional wiki setup (webserver) is probably more what you're looking for.

I don't know how I missed this post before, but I just discovered TiddlyWiki and I must say, it is awesome! I have it running on my 8GB memory stick and I don't know how I lived without it.
