The first time I saw her on SNL, I thought she was pretty funny. The second time I saw her on SNL it was pretty obvious she was another "I play one character" SNL person. I'm not sure she deserved her own show, exactly, but I guess it has fared well, so go figure. As for picking on D&D players ... I guess that just comes with the territory.

Oh come on y'all. That show was funny.
Yes, she made fun of gamers.
She makes fun of everybody.
She made fun of cops, gays, and right wing crazies too. I bet they're not complaining on whatever message boards they go too.
And she showed her friends actually gaming on TV. It was affectionate teasing, not malicious.
Grow a funnybone, people.
Sarah Silverman's not picking on you. If anything, she made gaming seem cool and quirky.
She did "the gaming community" a favor.

Guys, seriously, do we really care? Unless you are the stereotype who lives with mom at thirty-five and has never kissed a girl (or guy, or whatever), so what? If gamers really want to get upset about this they'll just come across as the same desperate lunatic Trekker fringe who still carry a grudge over Shatner's "get a life" skit on SNL. Silverman took a cheap shot and made some people laugh. Comedians do that all the time. But if you're watching a comedian who gets chuckles out of cutting people down sooner or later you'll get cut down, too. Everyone loves watching the monkey fling poo until the poo gets flung at them.
Silverman's always been hit or miss. She's no Bill Hicks or Lenny Bruce. She's part of an edgy corner of comedy that, while amusing, is in no way important. She won't be remembered five years after she stops performing. And she looks geeky enough that, I'm sure with enough snooping, you'd find out she either gamed herself once upon a time or hung out with a lot of gamers; we're able to smell one of our own.

Meh. Not having had a t.v. for two years now I am kind of out of the loop on t.v. shows. However, the video wasn't all that particularly funny and if she is a recent product of SNL then that explains it. I don't think SNL has been funny since the late 90s but then I'm a 25 year old who doesn't own a t.v. or a single gaming console. Meh, again.

Brian Posein (I think that's how you spell his last name) is the big D&D player with glasses. He and Patton Oswalt are both nerdy comedians; they did the letters column on the comic book Powers for a few issues and Patton Oswalt at least still plays D&D as his self-described "cheap mid-life crisis" and is the D&D/Ren Faire guy on Reno 911. Sarah Silverman is part of their "comedy clique" with appearances behind her on the fantastic Mr. Show program of the '90s and a lot of other appearances. I think she's pretty funny.
Come on, if you can't laugh at yourself the terrorists win.

I know you won't come up to NYC, Zombie, but I've been looking for a reason to hop on the train and come down to your neighborhood. Don't make me take your arms off- again. :)

Did anyone else see her season premier last night? Long story short anyone in the D&D community over age 12 took another embarrassing hit for playing the game.
Ah.. keep it in perspective. She was looking for an easy target to distract the unhappy masses who were pissed that she said of Brittney Spear's two little boys, "aren't they most adorable little unwanted accidents you've ever seen?"
Even though Brittney garners no love herself, that didn't go over too well.
So now it's "point at the easy target" time!

Well Zombie, as Scream has failed to point out, his statement is a figure of speech known as metonymy.
;)

I agree that she's a geek. She who surrounds herself with geeks and when it came time to make fun of yet another group, she chose us. Brian Posehn, the 6'7" gay guy on her show... is very into comic books in real life, and is good friends with comedian Patton Oswalt, himself a D&D player who has been hilarious when he's lampooned D&D players on Reno 911.
Sarah Silverman was once funny. Now she, although occasionally still funny, attempts to capitalize on filling a niche that isn't filled by any mainstream women comedians, that of "raunchiest" (although the less popular Lisa Lampanelli easily slides into the number two slot--because apparently a lot of men slide into hers (hey look, I'm making jokes here!)). I'm guessing that on some level Silverman's comedian/TV producer boyfriend, Jimmy Kimmel, groomed her towards becoming more of a walking event than an actual joketeller.
Thing is, often it's just raunch without the laughs. She's turning into a one trick pony. I think with raunch there's a thin line between funny and just turning people off. That line shifts depending on the viewer but I suspect she steps over it for most people. I watched two episodes of her new show and it wasn't worth it for me; sitting through all that deliberate provocation just to get to the three momemts worth giggling at. The whole thing seemed so desperate and reaching. But that's just me.

Wow. I'm more metro than him. Of course my wife dresses me.

Jade, dammit stop reading my brains- it hurts.
Honestly, that was everything I was thinking. Thanks for typing it out so much clearer than I could have.
I was thinking of writing-meh.
Sorry about the accidental mind meld, Zelligar. Hate to offend Mike McArtor, but I learned it from Tuvok on Voyager. I just keeeeeeding!
BTW, Silverman was very good in I want someone to eat cheese with, an independant film just out.

Comedy Central?
Basic cable service in the United States used to have a viacom produced comedy channel called HA! (I think... it didn't last long). Then came MTV owned Comedy Central. Originally just a place to see half hour and hour long sets from different comedians they nurtured The Daily Show with Craig Kilbourne and then John Stewart until it was a major stop for 18-30 year olds looking for news with a comedic twist. Many emmys later and their newer The Colbert Report show is also very popular. Comedy Central also makes a big deal out of its celebrity roasts.

A lot of people get their news from it, too.
I watch it regularly. It has a talent for pointing out the inhuman stiffness and BS of politicians in a way that network news dares not. Who am I voting for? The zombie I guess. Huh, which zombie? Oh I take your point. Well this coming election I'll vote for the one with no core belief system. Which zombie with no core belief system, you ask? Well... the ambitious one, of course. Whazzat? Oh yeah, need to be more precise. Which ambitious zombie with no core belief system?
Frankenstein. Oh wait, he's not running? Then no one.

Isn't any clique a target for ridicule? I am offended that it wasn't funnier. Gamers are a wealth of material. That is the best they can come up with?
I want to like Sara because she is cute, but I have to agree with Jade. She does not know where the line between shock and humor is so she finds herself consistently on the wrong side.

It started out funny. But I wish they fininshed the skit.
It just aint gonna get me upset.
To be honest, I don't like sarah silverman. SHe really ain't that funny. Maybe that's why what I saw of the sketch I thought was funny cause she wasn't in it.
I enjoy jokes about D&D players. Manly cause its about me, and in the end self centered and as long as its about me, who cares what the message is.
