I moved this post to avoid threadjacking.
I have seen the occasional post on these messageboards about the modrons and have been shocked to see people seem to like them. What do they look like now?
Heathenson had mentioned that he hated these guys since he saw the illustrations the original Monster Manual II and then read the write-up.
I have to agree with him, these were always my least favorite monster ever. They looked liked stuff left on the table after a long gaming session--with pipe cleaners for arms and legs. Ooh look, 4-sided modron, and 6-sided modron, and there's banana peel modron.
So what book are they in in the current edition and what do they look like? I am glad to hear it sounds like they improved them.

Well, in 2e. DiTerlizzi did the art for them on Planescape...there was a Dragon a couple months back with a Modron on the cover and I think stats. DiTerlizzi--I really like his art, I just am down on modrons.
I hear people say "I haaaaaaaaaaaate animal heads," and I say, "are you a complete twit," then I remember my own modron issues and let it rest. Everybody's got their thing I guess.
I knew a guy who HATED gnomes, so one time my mom got me some garden gnomes as a gag gift for Xmas, and I set them up on the gaming table, one between where everybody would sit...

Thanks, Heathansson, it will give me an excuse to look at some Dragon covers.
Gnomes were a very late like for most of my group too and half-orcs are still mostly hated. I know alot of the hate stems from the illustration in the original PHB.
In a friend's epic level campaign (who also hated the modrons) he had our party try to eliminate ALL the modrons. Since the MMII had the number of each that existed he just checked them off as we killed them. As we were all fighters, we had to beg for him to stop. Wading through field of your enemy's gore is cool when you are reading Moorcock, but in D&D it just made our wrists hurt.

Cause they have triangle robot people. They look like f&#&ing muppets. I might as well put my group up against Porky Pig and the Tasmanian Devil if I want to be taken seriously.
I bet if porky Pig whipped out a blade and sliced your nards off you'd not find him so funny
hehjust because modrons look, well what someone thinks of as stupid it doesnt make them worthless
I mean think about how stupid alot of creatures look
like trolls, or beholders, but they get respect because at one time or another they ripped some PC's throat out and started beating his friends with the tonsil end.
Im not saying you make modrons evil or creepy, but make em aline (cause they are) and then figure out in what situation, or light would make em cool
and do it
and yeah i think they are kinda goofy too, but i think they could have potential
heck I had become totally humdrum bored with goblins until I read how they were presented in the first issue of RotRL. Now I cant wait to use em again. The way the paizo guys represented them wasnt weird or different, they just reminded my how goblins can be cool
