Here is a quote about the new WotC Exemplars of Evil supplement (found here):
Toss in a bit of Far Realm, a healthy dose of Kyuss, and a smattering of corrupted servants, you have the making of a scenario that will leave your players shuddering.
Kyuss?!? I thought he was defeated dead by a band of heros...oh, maybe he was just banished out to the Far Realms. Interesting...

Just came across some notes of mine from early 3.0 campaign home-brew (set in Greyhawk) - so, about 4 to 5 years ago <or perhaps even longer than that, they're not dated> - that had Kyuss pegged as a mere harbinger of Bad Things to Come via Greyhawk's most Naughty and Gibbering gawd Tharizdun.
Little was I to know that Kyuss would get his own adventure path some time later ... good times.

Remember: Back in the good old days of Queen of the Demonweb Pits, you used to beat on Llolth.
Is SHE dead? Naw, you just made her angrier.
(Now, if you want a real treat, look in Complete Scoundrel. The sample NPC for one of the first classes in the book. Avenging Murderer or whatever it is. Yeah. He should look familliar to Paizo-era adherents...)

Used to be whomping Lolth was a rite of passage ... neg 10 AC, but a pathetic 66 hit points ... one PW kill after a whomp or two and it was all over.

Ahh...good ol' 1st edition.
The pathetic dragons with 8-12 hit dice, Asmodeus had what, 150hp?
*Chuckling* Just take a look at the 1st edition Dieties and Demigawds book to stir up some really old memories... where undead were more feared than dragons, gawds were hunted down for xp and swag, and only a handful could escape the wrath of a high-level party ... such as the Cthulhu 'pantheon' ... (I once squished a PC's gibbering henchman between 2 of Azathoth's orbiting asteroid critters, the players beat a hasty retreat immediately... good times, good times.)

She was double that on her home plane - but even the greater gods maxed out at 400 hp (again double that on thier home plane) were possible targets by a monty haul party.
And of course no die caps on firebealls, lightning bolts and even no limit to magic missles ... all this in 3 core rule books! SIGH the good old days

Since when has death been a permanent thing for gods, or other powerful beings? Didn't seem to bother Orcus much. Even Demogorgon, when "slain" at the end of the STAP, might not be permanently gone. There's a mention that he might just pop back because the Abyss wants him to. Kyuss can definitely reappear.
