Orik Vancaskerkin .............spoiler

Rise of the Runelords

Ok as far as I can see this guy will live through this part of the adventure, if the PCs don't just kill him outright. So is he planned for further parts in the game? I would just like to know because this guy would make a great cohort for the players when they reach 6th level. And by the sounds of it they will reach it in the next mod. I just really like his history, and working with the pcs will help him on his set plans.

Thanks, vh42

Orik's got no plans for the rest of Rise of the Runelords. Do with him what you will! :)

I think for a published NPC of his level he's a badass. My fighter duelled him and would have lost if the cleric hadn't intervened. Usually even fighter type NPCs aren't well built being more story flavor focused. I was and still am impressed by this 15 point buy sword and board fighter NPC. Like his back story too.

My PCs actually took a real liking to Orik for reason I fail to comprehend fully. I mean, I like him too and I might have portrayed him in a sympathetic way enough for them to care, but usually they are of the bloodlusting sort (and they didn't hesitate to kill off other major NPCs in Thistletop like poor Lyrie).
They even went as far as giving him control of the now-cleared Thistletop for him to manage his own mercenary company, something I really didn't expect, but it turned out pretty well for them: they had military help in dealing with the Skinsaw Men in Book 2, and are about to get a big reward at the beginning of Book 4.

My players turned him in, and I had him join the black arrows and follow them in the beginning of book 3. That is about when they will be level 6 anyway, so if they wanted him as a cohort, it would be the perfect time.

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

While fighting Chief Ripnugget, one of my players decided to play a Plot Twist card that causes a "wandering monster" to show up and help the party. This was a rather unexpected place to deal with it, but I decided to have Orik be the guy.

Orik burst into the room mid-fight, said, "I quit!" and joined in the fight. He gave them a bit of vague info about what they would face downstairs and stormed out.

I'm not sure how I'll use him, but will definitely keep him around.

My PCs let him go (and even let him keep his gear!) on the condition that he'd take the horse from Thistletop back to Sandpoint and then disappear, which he did. After knocking around Magnimar for a while looking for Lirie, he ended up in some sort of trouble and shipped off to the Black Arrows rather than face the noose. I levelled him up comparable to Vale Temros and replaced him, since both Kaven and Jakardros have compelling reasons to remain in the story. A couple weeks ago during the assault on Fort Rannick, he helped set up flanking for the party rogue and ended up neatly bisected by two hasted ogres and an ogre hook crit.
