If I remember correctly: Sa-gig Yra-gern(e)

Zagig Yragenre
Ernegary Gigaz

And so forth...I'm sure everyone and their mother knows this, but just in case...

Not me ... I only knew about the prison (which incidentally plays a significant role in the current story arc of my homebrew campaign, but without any of the GH canon backstory).

Knew nothing about Zagig himself, much less a last name or the joke.

Thanks for the enlightenment,

Rez

If I remember correctly that used to be a standing joke for Greyhawk. Want to name something quick? Spell a friend's name backwards, presto instant odd sounding name fit for a fantasy milieu.

It's a reverse of Erne(st) Gary Gygax. There seems to be much debate regarding the actual pronunciation, however. In a pinch, Zag-gig works, but I doubt it's correct. :)

How about asking Uncle, if he's still on these boards...?

He must have spent more time than any in the original (1970's) dungeon...?

Uncle is still around...he posts over at the Maure Castle boards sometimes...especially now that Maure Castle looks like it's come to a grim all-too-soon conclusion.

For instance, "Naes" (pronounced 'Nay-ss'). Fun, ain't it?

Fear the dark lord Rellim Xam! Hey, that doesn't work half bad. Gary was smart and uncreative at the same time.
