EaBK: They took the egg!

Age of Worms Adventure Path

Liberty's Edge

Well, I've just wrapped up the final big scene isn EaBK (except the epilogue fight with the Spawn). This was the first issue of this AP I bought, and I was delighted at how it turned out.

The PC's were able to rest for the night after their confrontation with Shukak, and a good thing too! The cleric was smart enough to pray for Water Breathing and they needed every spell they could get against the chamber guardians.

Luckily, they didn't use any big blast radius spells that could spill over into the egg pool and not a single egg was destroyed! Greedy PC's that they are, they realized that a black dragon egg is worth a fortune, so they took it with them in a Handy Haversack (I made them make a Dex check not to break it).

So now they're unknowingly walking around with a thousand Kyuss worms in an egg. Talk about your twisted version of a Kinder Surprise! >:) Any thoughts on a good time to let them loose?

My group just finished EaBWK last week and did the same thing. They figured maybe they could raise a baby black dragon or sell it (greedy S.O.B.s!)Anyways, I decided when they got back to the keep and the Kyuss spawn attacked that the spawn's presence "woke" up the egg, causing it to hatch. So as they duelled with the spawn, thousands of worms spilled all over the floor and made life a lot more complicated for the PCs. In the end, they managed OK but it was a fun surprise for myself and the players.

In the aftermath of Shukak's death, only the lizardfolk druid entered the egg chamber, along with Hishka (since they can all hold their breath longer). They were attacked by black draconic kobold sneaks, but they were driven off easily enough. The lizardfolk PC immediately slashed the egg in half... With his natural AC of 5, he wasn't affected by the worms found within, but it was a learning experience for everyone.

I suggest having that captured egg crack at some random moment (or perhaps during a nasty fall off a horse, during combat, whatever). Whoever is near the egg gets a nasty surprise as he/she is immediately engulfed in green worms. ;)

They've put the egg in their Handy Haversack for transport. I can see them facing off against the 6 Spawn in the basement (ran the side adventure on the boards -everyone died) and waking up the egg. Should be hilarious when they reach into it for a some holy water and pull out a mit full of green worms! And by hilarious, I mean horrifying. :)

As a dm I can appreciate the horror of that scene and the glee I would feel on being able to describe it. I would just point out one small snag ( in case you have a rules lawyer in your group) The magic of the handysack brings exactly what you search for to hand. Unless they asked for the egg, it seems unlikely that the worms would be discovered.

However, this brings up some nice possibilities. Imagine their greater surprise when they are in the house in Diamond lake that they spent all that time and money getting fixed up when they decide to pull out their shiny new black drag- OH MY GOD NO!!! :)

my 2 cents,

There's been discussion along this line before. The one that stood out most in my head (and I can't remember if it was just a suggestion or if this had actually happened to a group) was for it to break while the group's being searched by Greyhawk City guards as they try to gain entrance to the city. Can really screw up your plot line if not done correctly, true, but what WONDERFUL RP possibilities!

I. Love. It! That's perfect, thanks!

My player took it too, and I was thinking about all kinds of nasty times and places to spring out those worms. Then:

"We build a big bonfire with a wooden platform on top."

"Okay" (wondering why).

"We put the egg on top and start tossing alchemical fire."

"Oh!"

So that was the end of that. In retrospect I'm not surprised that they guessed what it was. They know quite a bit about the AoW and are very suspicious.
