I know I'm about 20 years behind here but I started reading the compilation Sandman comics in Graphic Novel format. I think the series is numbered 1-12? I've only got to #4 so far but when I went to pick it up I noticed a few other graphic novels that were also Sandman books and not part of the numbered series.
Could someone clue me in on the proper order to read these things aside from the obvious numbered series, please? What other books are out there besides the numbered series? Is there a good website that will explain this to me without playing the spoiler?

I kinda envy you, in that you get to read this series for the first time. :)
I think the best way to read the series is to just read the 12 trade paperbacks in order. There is a lot of surrounding stories to the series, both written by Gaiman and not, but you can save that stuff until after you've read the series itself.
For a good list of the titles available, you can just check out the Wikipedia entry. Scroll down to "The Sandman Library" and avoid reading the plot summary stuff.

If you have access, find the individual issues. Not the Vertigo Essential reprints, though. The real deals.
The letter columns that he (and Karen Berger) answered were just as mind expanding as the actual stories.
