Surprise Round:

Ethelwulf - 20

Actions from other parties as desired

Wanted to check, did you mean for Erian/Ethelwulf to go ahead with surprise actions, or wait for the others?

Correct. Erian and Ethelwulf are currently considered a seperate group. The goblin has not seen them, and they are close enough to where they can sneak up and attack or perform other actions in a surprise round.

Spotting the goblin, apparently alone, Erian instinctively draws back on his bowstring, leveling the arrow at his foe. He concentrates for a moment, breathing in to steady his aim, then releases the arrow as he exhales. The shaft flies through the air in an arc toward the unsuspecting goblin, a slight twang of the bow the only indicator of an impending attack. Even as the arrow is in flight, Erian urges Sherwyn toward the goblin's position and begins knocking another arrow to fire.

Ranged attack roll 11+5=16. Damage roll 7+4=11. Move as close as possible with Sherwyn (max possible 60').

Spoiler:
Can I assume that in the time between Erian moving out from the gate area on Sherwyn and the surprise round Janas can have completed her gate search and put her chain shirt on? It takes a minute to put on PHB 123.

The arrow flies true, straight into the back of the goblin where Erian would place the Devils heart. Without even a scream, it falls forward into the grasses. The long reeds and dirt soak up the crimson ichor becoming a sickly brownish red.

The Goblin doesn't move again, and Erian sees no other hostiles as he and Ethelwulf approach the body.

The Lady finishes putting on her armour and moves over to the gate next to Memnon, her bow at the ready.

Mentally she attunes her mind to her spells of enchantment and illusion.

Erian leaps down from Sherwyn's saddle and hurries over to the creature to assess its health and, if possible, keep it from bleeding to death. Given a little healing magic, this creature could reveal much about the goings-on of late, and perhaps even the fate of the missing girl...

Erian makes a Heal check to assess the goblin and stabilize it if possible. I'm assuming unless it only had 1 hp it is still alive, but dying. If so, here's several checks to see how many rounds it might take, with each failed check pushing the goblin -1 hp closer to death. 1st round Heal check is 2+2=4, 2nd round is 13+2=15, 3rd round is 7+2=9, 4th round is 17+2=19, 5th round is 11+2=13.

I usually play that these rules are used for PC's, but I'll go along with this. It takes you 1 round to reach the goblin. Your first successful check (2nd round) happens on the third round

Erian gallops Sherwyn over to the slain goblin and jumps from the saddle. He quickly looks over the goblin checking for vitals. Just touching the vile creature sends bile up his throat, but eventually he locates a weak pulse. Erian is able to stem the bleeding using some cloth, and he feels that he added minutes to the goblin's journey into darkness. Erian, does acknowledge the fact that if he would move the goblin, the flow of blood would continue out of his control.

With all but one vine cut, the gate swings open as if the vine was a hinge on a door. It now hangs loosely, and the weight of the metal is putting pressure on the stretching vine.

The shifter looks at you and slowly lowers his bow. “I’m guessin’ Pleoh sent ya. Just so ya know, we see goblins outside the wall all the time. I evn’ clipped one with an arrow a few days back.” He pauses then after your introduction when you mention the broken gate. “What do ya mean the gate’s broken? I will have to alert my superior. Now I need you down from here. My shift’s almost over and now I have to talk to my Captain. All the same, I wouldn’t advise jumpin’. It’s ten feet, could be a nasty fall.” He then trots away, waving down the next guard along the wall.

The guard doesn't give time for Aradove to respond. Aradove stands there for a moment after the guard turns and leaves. Aradove hears Memnon knock down the gate. From her point of view she is able to see part of the gate with Memnon standing there. Aradove thinks to herself, "Well do I jump and take the chance of getting hurt or do I go back down the ladder and go through the gate with everyone else?" At the same time Aradove is worried about Ethelwulf, as she is rarely without him. Aradove decides to go back down the ladder and join the rest of the group. Before heading back she takes a look over the side of the wall in hopes of seeing something that may be helpful to the group, as it would be a waste of a trip if she did not. Aradove wonders what Dinpel will decide to do when he sees her returning from the wall.

Can I do a defend and possible track check for Ethelwulf even though I am not with him?

Handle Animal 18+7= 25 to Defend Erian while he is with the Goblin
Track Check 19+5=24

For DM:

Spoiler:
If Ethelwulf can defend Erian please post
Aradove whisles at Ethelwulf hoping that he is within earshot. She hears two barely audiable short yelps. She knows from this signal that he is fine and can hear her. She lets out two long whistles and three short whistles that are at a high pitched frequency barely audible to anything other than a wolf. She lets him know that she wants him to defend Erian if anything attempts to attack him. She also signals him through two short whistles a one long whistle that if Erian needs help Ethelwulf can signal Aradove with three short howls.

Male Half-Elf Bard 1

Erian stays by the goblin, making sure the little devil doesn't die before his companions arrive and hoping one of them possess healing magic. Seeing Ethelwulf sitting attentively nearby, he looks the wolf in the eyes and says (in Sylvan, though he know it'll likely do little good), "Go to Aradove. Bring her back here. Understand?"

The shepherd dons the chain shirt that Erian retrieved for him. "Fharlanghn, keep your people out of harm's way as they venture beyond the safety of these walls and confront the goblin menace," he whispers while eyeing his companions. He loads a bolt into his crossbow, takes cover by the gate, and scans the area beyond it for further signs of goblin activity.

Well, oh Aradove; you ready to head out; looks like we missed the prelims; I will climb down the wall then help you down; just lower yourself down and step on my head and shoulders; be good practice in case we have to do this sort of thing again; goblin lairs can be full of this type excersize.

<since we dont seems to be in a hurry can I take a 10 or 20 on climb? also, I have jump and tumble if I fall..>

Ava - Dinpel speaks goblin; maybe we can use your intimidate and play good cop bad cop :)

Male Halfling Warmage 1

As soon as the gate is broken open, I charge through the space and begin the (very) long run towards the goblin's position. I have only the barest comprehension of tracking or stealth, so this is basically a headlong rush across the field.

"Dinpel, you always make me smile. I will step on your shoulders and see just what balance the two of us have." Aradove steps onto Dinpels shoulders and is pleasantly surprised to see that they are quite stable and balanced. Dinpel takes a few steps forward and backward. Aradove jumps down. I am readying a magic missil, in case more goblins come running up

Confused DM. Did Aradove go back down the ladder with Dinpel, or did Dinpel attempt to climb down the outside of the wall, then allow Aradove to step on him.

If the 2nd holds true, then I need Dinpel to make a jump check (no real handholds to climb), also a strength check to support Aradove. And Aradove, make a balance check

As the gate swings awkwardly outward Memnon draws his sword and charge out into the field.

Thanks for any help

As Aradove watches the guard leave, she looks out across the wilderness and plains that surround the southern portion of Erian’s Glen. She easily spots Sherwyn with an empty saddle, but then spots Erian kneeling on the ground with Ethelwulf by his side. She notices that he is hunched over a goblin. Aradove uses vocalization to communicate with Ethelwulf. She is pretty sure that he got the message. As she finishes her call, Dinpel arrives at her side.

These actions were successful, and now Aradove and Dinpel are outside Erian’s Glen along the wall

Dinpel jumps and spins off the wall, and with a spring and roll on the ground, he lunges to his feet with grace. He then helps Aradove climb down, supporting her with his hands and shoulders. All-in-All, they make a really good team.

Ethelwulf looks at Erian as he speaks to him, but during the request, Erian notices that Ethelwulf’s ears perk up toward Erian’s Glen. At this, Ethelwulf ignores Erian’s request and starts walking a perimeter around the ranger and goblin with his ears flipping to listen in different directions. The wolf’s eyes shine a brilliant gold as they reflect off the setting sun while they scan the plains.

Shepherd, Lady Janas, and Ava stand inside the gate, peering out with their ranged weapons ready watching Dardin and Memnon bolt towards the ranger, but spot no additional goblin activity. Ava does pick up the sound of Aradove, on the wall, making a series of whistles.

Dardin sprints with all his gusto. Breathing heavily when he finally reaches the ranger, Dardin finds no more horrors in the surrounding area.

Memnon, seeing Dardin dart past him when he pushes the gate open, rushes after him. He keeps pace with the Halfling and reaches Erian shortly after. He scans the area but finds no enemies in sight.

I believe that summarizes everyone’s actions. Let me know if I missed something. Also, for great roleplaying and teamwork, everyone gets 200 XP.

Erian replies (in goblin) to Dardin, "I don't believe there are any others about..." He then continues (in Common) loud enough for Memnon to hear, "Looks like with some healing this one will live. You move forward towards Erian, attempting to keep an eye out for nasties while also remaining hidden. You spot nothing out of the ordinary. Dinpel also hears nothing. This actually catches him as strange. The farther south you go, it seems that you don't even hear a bird chirping or a small animal running. It is as if everything is hidden or just plain gone.
