This month in Wired there is an interview with Patton Oswalt titled "You Nerdy Rat" where he talks about D&D. Here's the part of the very short interview.

Wired You're nearly 40, and you're returned to playing Dungeons & Dragons. Please explain.
Oswalt It's a benign way to have a midlife crisis that doesn't involve sports cars. My wife is probably hoping, "Maybe tonight he'll just go to a strip club..." Instead, I'm out rolling dice and saying things like, "I don't know if a Wall of Fog spell lasts that long!"

That's it. Anyone else have some tidbits to contribute?

Vin Diesel wrote the forward for the "30th Anniversary of Dungeons and Dragons" book. That was a few years ago.

Yeah, Vin Diesel is apparently a HUGE D&D nerd.

I might have a bit of a man crush on him because of that.

More Vin Diesel trivia: His chest/stomach tattoo says "Melchior" - the name of his D&D Character. :)

Mmm...Vin Diesel... *licks Vin's bald head*

Other celebs that play that I know of is Stephen Colbert, Robin Williams, Wil Wheaton (of course).

I had a conversation with Dave Chappel about DnD. He's played before, but he's a bigger video game and comic book nerd.

I knew I should have included the caveat, "except Vin Diesel".

Little known fact about Vin Diesel, he is so mighty that Gary Gygax wanted to name a monster after him, but he wouldn’t allow his name to be used for fear that PC’s would constantly run away. That is why we now fight the mighty Tarrasque, instead of the mighty Vin Diesel

Oh, and WWCND?

Naah...that'd be "celebrity stalking" which is dorky. ;)

Steven Spielberg used to play, I think. He put D&D into one of the opening scenes of E.T.

Hmm... I'm not too sure about that. By the time D&D came about, Spielberg was already hard at work for Universal, and especially in the early days of one's directing career, one has little time for other pursuits, particularly something like D&D (which is brain-resource intensive).

More importantly, E.T. was directed by Spielberg, but written by Harrison Ford's ex, Melissa Mathison, who was probably just a good writer, aware of the D&D phenomenon, and wrote it into her script.

Or her or Spielberg's kids had played it or something.

I think it's unlikely that Spielberg has ever played seriously himself (not counting getting roped into a game by his kids -- many of us have done the same to our parents, which doesn't automatically make them gamers).

Brian Warner (a.k.a.) Marilyn Manson, as well as Mark Tremonti of Creed and Alterbridge, Claudio Sanchez of Shabutie, 3, the Prize Fighter Inferno, and Coheed & Cambria, and Josh Homme of Kyuss, Mastodon, and Queens of the Stone Age are all former D&Ders.

Notable would be webcomic artists who HAVEN'T played D&D.

I'll guess . . . Ryan North?

This entertaining myth started up during the filming of xXx. His character was heavily tattooed, so he requested that the makeup artists put the name of his D&D character amongst them.

He doesn't have a real tattoo of his character's name. Like the rest of us, I'm sure he has gone through countless characters.
