Are druid animal companions limited to those listed in the PHB? I re-read the druid class features and it seems to be so. The starting companions "must be from the following list". But there are no rules on selecting future animal companions (apart from the advanced list in the PHB) that I can find. So, what are the guidelines for, say, choosing a new dinosaur from Savage Tide? Thanks.

Technically: Yes.
Ultimately: Depends on the DM.
I see nothing wrong with taking other animals, comparable of course, instead.
The iconics in the pages of Dungeon have alternate animals - the wolf cloak wearing female (a ranger I believe) has a mountain lion, and the elf in the Savage Tide AP has a small dinosaur.
I don't see anything unbalancing about it, just adds flavor to the game.

It depends. Most new books that are released with new critters, also have rules for taking them as animal companions. For instance, the best animal companion for a Druid is probably the Fleshraker from MMIII. But if you check out the Players Handbook 2, it has a list of all the possible Animal Companions a Druid can take.
Alternatively, just work something out with your DM, or if you really want a particular animal, just use the Stats for an existing option, but say it is whatever you want. (EG, there is nothing stopping me from using the Stats for a Wolf, and calling it a Hyena)
