Interesting name for the world!

Yay! Glad you think so. It's an anagram of the first letter of all the editorial staff members' names spelling an English word, translating that word into Norwegian, then translating it back into English and scrambling the letters again…

Or maybe Erik came up with it.

Hmmm. I can't make to many words with one vowel and 3 J's. I was hoping I could actually fulfill the parameters of your assertion.

Scarab Sages

Ol' Garion, or Golarion in Pidgen English...

Mr. Eddings is wincing.

Wes, I should assume you were joking, but just in case you weren't...what was that Norwegian word?

Hey, I'm Norwegian! Nice to know that my small country can help naming such a (hopefully) big and important world :)

I wasn't the only one to make the connection then . .. good.

Hei Trellian!

Jeg stilte spørsmålet fordi det virket tvilsomt at "Golarion" opprinnelig var et norsk ord :)

Golarion, huh? Cool. I saw that too, and wondered if it was to be the name for the continent or the whole world. I had a thought that James Jacobs would do something cool and communal with his group of seven.

And I was just about to create a new post asking message-board writers to present their own ideas for naming the world. I myself was fond of translating 'Adventure Planet' into the latin 'Venturi Mundi', or something similar (its been a while since I took latin!)

Cheers

Yeah, but if we could reverse engineer it to be true, it would be really funny. So first we have to rearranege the letters to make a word or phrase.

So far, all I've got is

Spoiler:
"Go in oral" I guess I must be a cunning linguist.
(spoiler included for questionable content)

Then we find a synonym using a combination of first letters of the editors names.

We can then find the Norwegian bridge word or phrase, whihc effectively doesn't matter. Unless someone comes up with a funny mistranslation that makes it all fit. That would be even better.

C'mon, we have an impossible puzzle! Someone solve it! Are you guys gamers or what?

Rambling Scribe, you've now scarred me for life :) I'll never be able to look at "Golarion" again w/out getting sidetracked (and mugged) down a dark, mental alley.

This is all my fault for my usual threadjack. Maybe I'll learn...

If you can do that, my friend, you get a whole box of cookies.

Golarion could also be a rough (OK, very rough) approximation of Glori Anum, the glorious year that Paizo created a new world for us to play and dream in! Thanks, guys for making the separation and individuation phase from our 'parents' a good one!

But suddenly I want to visit Golarion even more...

How do you pronounce it?

GHUL-arion?

gol-ARION?

GOLAR-ion?

??????

Sovereign Court Contributor

My new anagram (now with less adult content) is: Iron Gaol. I'll continue my pointless reverse-engineering efforts shortly.

Which could somehow be understood in a very "adult content" manner by French speakers...

;-)

I gots ta tell ya, I'm not crazy about this "Golarion" name. Everything else about Pathfinder has been cool, but this. The first time I saw the title of this thread I thought maybe someone had horribly mes-spelled "Girralon".

I think if/when I finally get to run this path I might change the name of the world (if it even comes up).

We pronounce it to sound like "clarion" with an extra "o" sound near the beginning. So clarion -> colarion -> Golarion.

Does that help?

Eh. So not everyone is going to like every single aspect of the new Pathfinder world. No biggie.

I like the name Varisia - not so crazy about Golarion (sounds like a magical venereal disease. But it's all cool). I like the sparing use of firearms, others don't. Alter as you see fit.

Bottom line is there is going to be enough crunchy goodness to go around to make everyone really happy. This is shaping up to be something great, so just wait and see.

Thanks Mike.

By the way, I have to agree with some of the posters on the boards.
I'm not a huge fan of this name either (though I don't hate it either and its different), especially since it's going to have to creep into the ecologies of a lot of the monsters I'm writing for this setting (prepare to be hammered with Phil monsters by the way!) ;-)
