Protoplasmic asphyxiation

3.5/d20/OGL

If a gelatinous cube engulfs you, do you have to hold your breath or risk suffocation? The rules don't say anything about that, and they're pretty good on such a thing generally. Nevertheless, I can see it definitely making sense that you'd have trouble breathing when bathed in acidic living gelatin. That would be a nasty little addition to make everyone's favorite lethal cube-shaped creature even deadlier (no idea if that's good or bad).

My DM ruling would be that yes, being swallowed up by anything, particularly a gelatinous cube or any other kind of ooze, starts an asphyxiation countdown.

Of course, i think you'd be dead from acidic digestion before you run out of breath at the levels cubes are a threat. YMMV :)

But it might be prudent to allow a check of some kind to push out to get a breath of air.

10 ft. long straw. Always carry one. Sure - the other players might laugh at you. But when you all get swallowed by gelatinous cubes, and you have a large straw to poke through, who's laughing then?

My cleric actually litterally walked right inside one of these buggers last night. Stupid transparency. Luckily, I've got pretty good Strength and got out in one round.

I have never actually been in any scenario in which an ooze of any kind actually posed even a shadow of a threat to our party.

They have a move speed of like, what, 5 ft? 10? We just sit back and toast their asses with scorching rays and move on.

Darkness, sharp corners, and bigger, badder beasties chasing the party set up jello cubes quite nicely:) But yeah, they're not a big, big threat usually.

One time a black pudding won initiative over the entire party. They all rolled pathetically and it rolled high. The players are still rather ashamed.

Wow. They should be.
