So I had an idea, primarily for a homebrew setting but it fits best here.

Instead of classes, everyone gets a heap of "minor feats" (need a better name I know) when they advance. I am thinking 10 or so per level.

The minor feats would be things like:
BAB +1
Fort Save +1
1 Skill Point
Single weapon proficiencies
1 extra hp
etc

3 minor feats could buy a normal feat

And each item would be limited based on level. For example BAB would be capped at level.

So at first level you could take, 1 BAB, 2 Fort, 2 Reflex, 3 Skill points, and a normal feat, making something very similar to a fighter, but with better reflex and skills, and worse weapon proficiencies.

I am planning on useing a skill based magic system, as well as very few hit points (HP = con, DR = con bonus)

Basically the intent is to be on the ragged edge of the SRD/d20 system, and play a classless game.

I've thought about doing something similar; for simplicity I would just make BAB and Saves the same as skills.

In my version I start characters with HP equal to their CON score (not bonus), and they can buy more as they go up levels. Rescaling the magic to deal with this is the big job. Weapon damage I mostly left the same (although power attack and sneak attack would need nerfing), and of course, armour as DR instead of AC

And then give them a defense/dodge skill that they can buy up as well.

Shields could go either way as a block skill or simply more armour.

Eeep, I am being followed by a rambling scribe...

Yeah, this is part of the rewrite for the game I pointed you towards in the other thread.

Specifically, sneak attack is going to be a feat, you can only get it once, it does 1d6.

Power attack is probably going to be something completly different, I am leaning towards take a penalty to hit, increase your threat range.

I have the BAB and saves stuff spelled out as seperate so they are easier to limit by "level", no character can put 10 minor feats in BAB at first level.

For more detail, I intend to have major skills and minor skill. (god I need a thesaurus), a character at creation picks any 10 skills as core skills (read class skills) major skills work exactly as D&D skills, and minor skills are a bit different. Double ranks for skill points, and the upper limits are different too. And some skills, specifically the magic skills, can only be learned as a core skill.

Since I plan on using my own magic system, I was already rewriting that whole thing anyway...

Cool. I will take a closer look at your site later. It appears that we have many similar approaches to D&D.

I'll stop following you now. I have to go pick up my son from Nursery School and we're going out for lunch with my Dad.

You'd be better off with a skill-based (Ars Magica) or point-buy (GURPS, HERO System) game system. Level-based systems that work well for this type of development are difficult to pull off.

You might want to take a look at the d20 version of BESM. There is a character class called the 'Adventurer' which seems like exactly what you're trying to do. The class has poor BAB, poor saves, and a d6 hit die with 2 + Int mod. skill points per level but it also acquires 'Power Points' every level which can be spent on things like attack bonus, feats, skills, extra hit points, special abilities (like rage, turning, spellcasting, etc.), and just about anything else you can think of.
