Catching Chemicals.....

3.5/d20/OGL

I was wondering if anyone had some house rules on catching alchemical items that are thrown at people. I was just playing shackled city the other day listening for the skulks then the little bastards threw a thunderstone right at my paladin and he just had to sit there and watch it go off. I am thinkings a dex check would be the best way to go. ANyone else have ideas?

I have never had this arise, but if need be, I would say that the only way to catch an item designed to break on impact would be to create a feat as a sister to Snatch Arrow that specifically allows the catching of delicate thrown missles. My general thinking is that such items are nearly equivelent to eggs, so catching them is not like catching a football where reliance on dexterity or strength would suffice. Attempting to catch a thunderstone, tanglefoot bag or flask of alchemical fire in such a manner would be the same as diving at the device in order to ensure it makes a direct hit. A generous DM may allow the Snatch Arrows feat to work this way (and thus prevent creation of YAF - Yet Another Feat) by requiring that the character have the Snatch Arrows feat and then making some sort of check like a dex check.

Regardless of the approach used, a success would indicate that the item ended up in the character's hand unbroken/discharged (you do have a free hand, don't you?) while a failure indicated a direct hit.

Not really sure, just my initial reaction.

I use the same ruling for thrown objects as I do for arrows/bolts.

So only people with appropriate feats can do so.

It happens rarely enough that this has never been an issue. For either the players, dm and dm's beasties.

Yeah, I'll agree with the general concensus here in that Snatch Arrows would be a must for any character who wished to pull this off. I've never had anyone try this in my campaigns, but if someone DID, I would probably require that the character meet the follow criteria:

  • Be within 5 feet of the item's intended point of impact.
  • Have the Snatch Arrows feat (Deflect Arrows is not good enough).
  • Succeed in a Dexterity check against a DC equal to the opponent's attack roll to throw the object.

If he fulfilled the criteria, he could catch the object and prevent it from detonating.

Almost the exact same but I'd make it a Reflex Save DC (10+Opponent's Attack Roll)

almost all based upon somantics. It is more of a reflexive action to reach out and grab that thing, and less a dexterous one. Therefore Refelx Save. However since you normally have several bonuses to your Dexterity modifier for a Reflex Save add in 10 for the sheer difficulty.

To be honest the results are almost identical to a Dex check, but it is like a dragon's breath weapon Reflex save for half, not a Dex check for half.

Well, thinking in terms of realism, thrown items move more slowly than arrows so they should be easier to catch (ie. can be done without Snatch arrows feat), maybe a dex check after successful reflex save check...
Though there should come also the possibility that the item is broken/sprung when you catch it, so then you have your hands full of glass shards and acid...ooh, that stings.

So since this probably wont come as that much of an issue, it is easier to go for that Snatch arrows feat (with added possibility that if you fail, you will get bigger impact from the item...)
