Self Image and Body Mods?

What do you people think of this?

Anyone here like to play with clothing/image?

Got any body modifications? Whether it be a simple pierced ear lobe or something like a transdermal calf implant, it’s a body mod! Got a tat? A golden crown? A split tongue? A ‘PA’? Get you’re nails done? Dye the hair now and then? Wear coloured contacts?

How come?

Why do it?

What does it say about you/culture etc?

In my teens and early twents, I went through a phase where I got a few piercings: nose, tongue, lip, ears, nipple etc (not all at once mind you –always thought one or two at a time was enough for myself). Bit of a punk back then I suppose.

I like change, often revamp my wardrobe and image, trying out different characters IRL.

At the moment I’m into power dressing (three piece suit, neat hair and shiny shoes –going for a ‘Gabriel from Constantine’ look) it's crazy how people react to this compared to when I'm just wearing jeans and t-shirt etc.

In the next few weeks I plan on shaving my head and dressing like a football (soccer) lout. It’s amazing the things you can do (or not) depending on how you present yourself.

I have recently become interested in getting a new tat or possibly scarification/branding but can’t quite decide on a specific image that I want to carry around with me forever.

Anyone else care to share?

I have a number of tattoos, mostly with Old Norse imagery. If I had more money, I'd get a few more, too. :D Beware the shaved head - once you chop it all off, you'll never go back. It is just too comfy and practical...

Not to worry, I’ve had a shaved head a few times before. :) The only thing that bothers me about getting my head shaved is after a week or three I’m bored and want long locks again -I am prepared this time however and am going to try and acquire a floppy ‘Andy Warhol style’ blonde wig from a friend.

Norse tattoos are great –I love the sense of power they have about them and all that rich mythology has so much meaning.

Would you care to elaborate on your reasons for having them done (I completely understand if its too personal though).

What style are your tats -runic, knots, deity/spiritual/ related or something else? How do others react to them?

:)

Also what would you have done if time/money allowed. What are you're limits when it comes to tats?

I don't have any tats/piercings, but I do occasionally dye my hair red. It's been a while, as my hair is really long and takes twice the normal amount.

As for tattoos and other permanent body mods, I've always felt that they needed to represent something deeply personal. Getting something for the "cool" factor never appealed to me. For instance, I would get a tattoo if I could get the specifics of what I wanted (a wolf-head torque armband, celtic knotwork) because it has meaning. My mom gave me a book once, and in her fashion, she always puts something meaningful on the inside cover. The book was "Women Who Run With the Wolves" and the inscription she wrote was "Howl proud - to your own pack be true." Hence, the wolf head torque.

The only other tattoo I would probably get would be some variation of "Lilith" in Hebrew, as that name has come to have meaning to me over the years.

I agree with everything you said here. (Love doing my hair bright red also -quite like when my black roots grow it out a little)

A lot of my friends that are into tats/body mods think it's a sin to get a tattoo from 'off the wall' of the shop -it has to be something you had made just for you.

Remember the bar-code craze of the 90's?

I have a tattoo of Vatnisse covered in old Nordic tattoos. I'm actually very creepy.

I drew up my own tattoo and had it slashed into me. I was never into tattoos and always thought that the people who got them could have just had a T-shirt airbrushed, or that they'd soon get bored of it and need another.

I chose to get one later in life, just because. I wasn't in pain, self-loathing, I was seeking pain for prove anything, and I didn't want to intimidate the general public with my badness. I just felt that I wanted the image on. I don't regret it. The tattoo lady said I'd be back. I told her no. One will do.

That's not going to change.

Lilith appears as a night demon in Jewish lore and as a screech owl in the King James version of the Bible.

There have been a few other threads about these questions over the past year+ ... I like to change up my facial hair all the time and i have a color tatoo of a sleeping sun with fire around it. My twin brother has an awake moon with water around it.

As ever,

Erm? ok?

Well, I have pierced ears, which is pretty tame. I seriously considered some other piercings, but the ears took over a year to properly scar over. My ears would bleed every time I took the earrings out. Not really wanting to do that again.
I do enjoy dying my hair. At first it was just for fun. Primary red was an especially good look for me. But now, I use more likely to occur in nature colors (wouldn't want to look too scary at the playground, I have a toddler). My natural harcolor has, alas, become a brilliant snowy white even though I'm pretty darn young for that. I don't know what that says about the culture, or just my personal vanity, but there you have it.
There is something fun about changing your look from time to time and totally reinventing how people see you, but I'm kind of over that. I'd rather have my own consistent style now.
I constantly admire other people's tattoos and totally lack the guts to get one myself. I admit it, I'm scared of needles.

Also, "Lilith" represents the darker female archetype, and the name (as well as the tattoo) would/does symbolize the acknowledgement of that side of myself.

Lessee... I just love the old myths and sagas, and have done so for as long a I can remember. I was briefly into the whole Åsatru stuff, but got very disenchanted and dropped it due to its rather hoky insistence on being "genuine and untainted" (whatever that means) and, more troubling, its connection to neo-nazism and white supremacy movements. For the same reasons, I avoid the runic stuff and bearded men with chainmail and axes, as they are closely tied to facism in Norway. Instead, I have ome "iconic" Norse creatures - I have Midgardsormen (the World Serpent), Nidhogg (the dragon who gnaws on the roots of the Yggdrasil) and the Fenris Wolf, and I want Odin's twin ravens and possibly his eight-legged steed.

As for style, they are just solid black-and-white, covering most of my arms and my back. I'd probably get the ravens on a calf - after that, I'm more uncertain of location... If time and money had allowed, I still wouldn't have done all that much more. I've never really been into the whole bodysuit thing, and I won't get them where I can't hide them if I need to. Thankfully, I got the tattoos after my camouflage gear phase - being a camouflage-wearing, tattoed skinhead would probably have been a bit too much for most people...

I really like you! It's too bad we can never meet in person, I think we'd get along great! But then again, I don't think I've met a single person on these boards I wouldn't welcome into my home, facial tatoos or no.

I have really long hair, so, I brush it, that's all. No tats, same reason Lilith said. No make-up, the weeds in my garden aren't too impressed with my appearance and my husband hates it. My ears are pierced but I rarely wear earrings. Levis and a clean t-shirt, yep, I'm really very plain and booring. I should change that...someday.

I could never get tatoos or piercings. Not a needle thing -- I have and odd aversion to having my skin pierced by anything (not bleeding or the actual object, mind you, the hole in my skin).

As for everything else, I wear a lot of expressive clothing (kind of creepy clothing too; torn jeans, skulls, etc. And the quintessential dragon of course). I have made recent hairstyle changes (wearing it longer on one side than the other), and may look into changing it again (shaving one half or all of it -- still deciding). As for hait coloration -- too perminant for me (I actually have the same issue with tats and stuff), but I have been looking into it (any tips on using KoolAid?). If I were to get a tatoo, it would be the impermenant stuff like henna or something, probably in a tribal pattern.

None of this is really cultural (except the henna, I am both Native American and Scottish, so I could justify a tribal or celtic design), I'm just not really sure what I want to look like. I also like the mutability that comes with stuff like this.

I shall check out that book by the way. :)

Also, a quick question for everyone: What do people see when they meet you, do you look like one thing (get stereotyped) then as they talk to you become another thing entirely, or is your image and personality closed tied (you are what you look like) or are you very different to how you look?

Example/exaggeration: A six foot six skinhead with ‘hate’ tattooed on his head that (once spoken to) reveals he is a pillar of the community, avid flower arranger and his swastika tats are actually Buddhist symbols.

I went through a phase in college where I dyed my hair black and wore my floor-length black leather trenchcoat EVERYWHERE (and I was in Arizona, so you know that I didn't actually NEED a coat). It was my first year on my own out of my parents home and I think I just wanted to create some kind of image for myself that would make people notice me. We had just moved to Arizona from middle-of-nowhere Indiana so I guess I must've thought that dressing like that would draw attention to me and I would meet more people this way.

Well, I was right about the more attention part. As you can imagine, I had cops confront me several times just asking what I was doing, where I was going, etc. I was never actually up to anything mischevous, I just looked like it. To be honest, I was a pretty model citizen back then (and still am). Eventually, I did make some friends through the local gaming groups that I found my way into and, after I had gotten more comfortable with the fact that I didn't need a shocking image to make friends, I ditched the routine entirely. I would say that I perpetuated the image for about 6 months before I finally hung the coat up for good. It took a few more months for the dye to work it's way out. I had it professionally done and that stuff goes DEEP.

I still throw the trench on when it's cold out at night (it's the only coat I own now) and I still put it on for when I want to broadcast some aura of 'badassness' but for the most part, it just hangs in my closet now and my hair has returned to its usual shade of brown.

Once, Dirk cut himself, and said something to the effect of "my skin is bleeding." I asked him if he was stoned. He said that he had never even seen marijuana before. It turns out that he just has an odd reaction to seeing his own blood. He just kinda...

ANYWAY,

Once I get the cash, I've been thinking about getting several tattoos. I've wanted one ever since I was around seven or eight, and nuthin' anyone says is going to stop me.

I have a high pain threshold, so I think I'd be a good candidate. (I once pumped about five staples into my arm for a dollar. Let's see... on another occasion, I put out a fire with my hand, and also accidentally whipped myself with a bullwhip- I didn't notice I was bleeding until several hours later.)

I don't really look like a nerd, just sort of plain, maybe only a little geeky (certainly not as much as my friend). The black t-shirts often lead people to think I am weird or goth poser, and the recent hairstyle changes have coused many to believe I am emo.

Once I open my mouth people usually figure out pretty fast how geeky I am. Then they tune me out, which is ever so nice.

Edit: actually I do have a sort of birdlike nerdy look, but not a smart nerd, just a weird one.

Dirk... nevermind, no comment

For work I have to wear suits and ties, or at least dress slacks, ties and sport coats. At home I wear jeans and T-shirts, mostly. I have had earrings before, when in college (2 in my left ear). I also had a more intimate piercing for a while, but didn't like it, so took it out. Up through my second year of law school, I had very long hair (half way down my back), but now wear it kind of like Tom Cruse in Mission Impossible 2. I have 3 tatoos, one on my shoulder is the holy symbol for Oldimmarra from the PHB, the second is a celtic knotwork around my arm, and the last is a set of chinese characters down my spine. The knotwork is because of my Irish heritage, and the chinese characters are a personal message I got when i passed the bar, and the Oldimmarra, just cause i liked it.

Scarab Sages

I have 8 tattoos, all dragons (obssessive? maybe).

My head is currently shaved, though over the years I have had it up to shoulder-length.

Outside of work I wear hawaiian shirts pretty much all the time. I actually got called Magnum P.I. today.

I'm not sure what people think when the see me, but I am sure it doesn't take them long to discover I am equal parts dork and jackass.

The thing that causes people to misjudge me isn't the arm tat, it's the hair. It's straight, kempt, natural dark brown... but it's exceedingly long. 40 inches on a 6'2" feller. Wouldn't grow it longer unless I wanted to join a circus sideshow.

When people see me, there is often a snap judgement. Perhaps they want to call me dude, or say, "Do you love 80's hair metal like I love 80's hair metal? You look like a taller Nuno or a shorter Pete Steele (I absolutely do not). Do you have the IQ of a snotrag in a litterbox, and are you high from a bong right now?"

However, when first this sort hears me speak it often causes an awkward moment. Forgive me for my pride in ownership here, but the speed of my wit and glib rhythm, the depth of my content, and my delicate choice of phrasing causes people not so confident in their own education or conversational abilities to start fumbling for their next thought. Their speech slows down and their wording becomes far more deliberate. It's like the final pages of Flowers for Algernon; like Porky Pig on psychoactive meds; like a child first learning to sound out words from an Easy Reader book in front of a domineering parent. I rarely approach conversation with adversarial intentions, but when my natural way of speaking slashes a Z into the egos of those I feel may be underestimating me simply based on my choice of du, I can't say I'm sorry for their humbling.

Sovereign Court Contributor

I change my hair and facial hair with alarming frequency. I am currently in transition from shaved bald to hopefully half-way down my back. So right now I look pretty average.

I have two small hoop earrings in my left ear. I got my ear pierced as a teen-ager to a ssert my non-conformity with the small town I lived in. An act of rebellion that I stand by. It was not cool to anybody that I had my ear pierced. My current hoops I put in almost ten years ago on my wedding day, and have never taken out since, nor do I intend to remove them ever again. Occasionally my Jiu-Jitsu instructor suggests that I should for grappling, but I've never had a problem.

I have a tattoo of the character Max from the book "Where the Wild Things Are" on my upper left arm. The woman who did the work was thrilled to do it because it was clearly something that I already had a long-time attachment to. She said it was one of very few tattoos she had given that she felt confident would never be regretted. Mind you, she specialized in covering and correcting old tattoos. I sometimes think I would like another, but I would have to be as sure about the content of the tatto as I was about that one.

When I got my ear pierced, I told my Mom I was going to. She asked me to wait six months and see if I still wanted to, and had wanted to without interruption for six months. I try to remember this whenever making decisions that burn bridges.

You've got a Max Sendak tattoo! Neat. I met him in NY city. My tattoo is a drawing I did based on an anime from 1981 called Sirius No Densetsu (US title: Sea Prince and the Fire Child). Looks like neither of us opted for guns, roses, or skulls.

My ears are pierced, once on each ear. But I never wear studs (because I keep losing them) so they'll probably close up soon enough.

Curly hair is really hard to do things with. I really really wish I could have hair like Karen O but alas, I cannot. And there really aren't any good role models for girls with curly hair. So, I do what I can. It's shortish now. I used to dye it kinda often, either darker brown or light auburn depending.

I have one tattoo, a sun done in henna brown lines and a yellow, green, and brown swirly in the middle, on my wrist. Cause Pelor is my dog, yo. He's got my back and I've got his.

If money were no issue, I'd have several more. A cat stretching on my foot is my next one, followed by my name in elvish on my other wrist, and then an abtract, stylized chain of flowers on my torso. I shy away from back tattoos becuase I have been told that a tatoo would just make it less pretty and becuase I have absolutely no pain tolerance there at all.

Get it chemically straightened! My other half does and it works out ok, not too often though because (like a perm treatment) it will damage the hair. :)

I shaved my head for the first time in October and I've kept it up ever since. It's a bit of a pain doing it again every few days, but it definitely beats going to a barber (or "stylist"). Plus, I've been balding since high school, so now I look a little closer to my actual age, rather than being the weird old guy that hangs out with younger people. Or, at least, I look age indeterminate. I could be 22, I could be older than the sea. I wish I could grow a mohawk or something cool like that, but the top of my head grows really thin hair, so it's impossible.

I have lucked out on facial hair, however, which grows thick, fast, soft and bright red. So, I experiment a lot with it. I did the Dr. Venture look for a while (bald head, forked goatee) but now I'm doing a Hulk Hogan handlebar and it looks a lot better in my opinion.

I would love to have tattoos up to my neck if I could, but I can never really figure out exactly what I want. And I'm pale and hairy, so there's a confidence issue with getting ink done. I was going to get a skull and crossbones that said "I'm a f%$#ing pirate!" on my arm, but after an intervention of friends and family members, I decided to rethink it. Maybe I'll cave in and get that portrait of Don Knotts that I've been dreaming about...

I used to be one of the angsty pseudo-goth/industrial/whatever kids during my troubled youth, dying what hair I had blue, painting my nails. Weeping, ever so softly. Now I just dress to blend in and be taken seriously with formal shirts, jeans and an awesome squid-brain tie (among other cool ties I've procured) that my sister got me for Christmas.

The Ghost and Mr. Chicken Don, or the Oddball Astronaut Don?

Still under 40, and still no tattoos. I might be the last person on Earth without them, one day. I've recently shaved the Machiavelli-style goatee, and before that, the big old gunslinger mustache. Now I just look like me.

No thanks! That crap is soooo bad for your hair and curly hair is much more sensitive that others. I'll be fine with my curls. And even though I would love to have Karen O hair, I've come to love the curls. Most days.

OK, so. There was a random lady that used to chaperone our high school trips that, for some strange reason, thought I was autistic. Every time she wanted to talk to me, she would speak VERY VERY slowly and use hand gestures.

Funny thing is, the joke's on her, because I played along a bit. I don't think she ever figured out that I wasn't mentally disabled.

I'm not sure how people percieve me upon first seeing me. I'm very average looking and my Swedish/Polish heritage is very evident, you can't tell by looking I've got alot of Indian in me. I can say that everyone I meet talks to me candidly, even complete strangers seem to tell me their life stories and tales of woe. Sometimes, it's kind of creepy, to have people I've never even laid eyes on before just start pouring their hearts out to me out of the blue while standing in line somewhere.

DAMMIT! FECKIN' BLACK HOLE ATE MY POST, THEN RANDOMLY BOOTED ME OFF THE SITE! Anyway, here goes.

Most people judge me by my appearence. Meaning, people think I'm WAAAY dumber than I actually am.

First of all, up until a few years ago, I was 'the fat kid,' so now, I've got all these wierd rolls of pallid, maggot-like skin all over my body.

Second, I wear coke-bottle Buddy Holly glasses.

Third, up until about November, my hair was about shoulder-length and feathered seventies-style. I thought it looked good, but in reality, I just looked like a mo-mo.

Fourth, I wear a lot of black. Therefore, I get shoehorned into the 'Emo-Goth-Industrial' category. I'm not gothic, I just like to wear black.

Fifth, I can't grow facial hair for s$+&e. It always comes in patchy (sorta like Keanu Reeves), and for some strange reason, containing patches of multiple colors. Seriously, parts come in red, others black, and some brown.

Well, I can't see where I was going with that, but, as Bill Nye would say, NOW YOU KNOW.

Um, no offence, but your glasses actually make you look like a nerd. The new ones not so much, but the ones you had before...

Mine's all the same color, but a completely different color from my hair. It's all patchy (I blame my Native American great-grandmother), and cannot decide what consistancy it wants to be. Some of it is thick, and some of it looks like weird long peachfuzz.
