Sandpoint and Magnimar . . . is the relationship more akin to Cauldron and Sasserine or Diamond Lake and the Free City?

The relationship is more like Greyhawk to Diamond Lake. Except that Sandpoint is a MUCH nicer place than Diamond Lake. That's not to say that it doesn't have its problems... it's just that it's less depressing a place to live. The goal with Diamond Lake was to start the PCs out in a dumpy town that they WANT to leave, that the only way they can AFFORD to leave is to become adventurers. That's not the goal with Sandpoint. Sandpoint is designed to be your PCs' home town. It's supposed to be a place you like, one you don't want to leave, and when you do, returning there is a welcome reward.
