Aaaah,....what have my ninja squirrel black op's brought me tonite???
Here, Chirchikchak; a walnut for my precious!
It's...a box, 1 foot tall, 8 inches wide. It says:
"Prototype: 4ed. Dungeons and Dragons Trading Card, Magic 8-ball, and Collectible Miniatures Game. Due out Christmas 2006." Hmmm....should be out any day now then. Oh, where was I?
The box has a picture of a dragon on it. No surprises there. Okay, opening,...
The first thing I pull out is....a drow miniature with 2 scimitars. Interesting.
The next thing is a kobold fishwife miniature.
Okay, now we're getting somewhere. Here's the magic 8-ball combat simulator. I shake it, and it says, "you hit!" Cooool. Now, I shake it and it says, "you did not save. You die." Hmmmmm.....
Now, here's a stack of cards. About 10 of them. First card: "feat card:power attack!!!" It has a picture of Krusk by Wayne Reynolds.
Okay, here's the 4ed. Player's Handbook. Strange, it's about the size of the old Blackmoor Book from the White Box days. Funny, how the more things change...
Hmm....now another drow figure, again with the two scimitars.
Okay, here's the dm's screen. Funny, there's nothing on it but a picture of about 2,500 different miniatures.

Oh,...according to the Player's Handpamphlet, the "rogue" class is being renamed yet again to the "rascal."
Oh, I must have one based off of the renamed Ebberon swashbuckler class ... the half-warforged bullywug rapscalion.
I can't wait to get to play some of my cards, though, this "Skill Focus: Haberdasher" with the Todd Lockwood kobold making meat helmets should get my oponant's attention! Yugi-oh-no!

I think it's great how this new version 4 D&D doesn't make ya have to think so much; rather, it allows you to just sit back and collect pretty things (satifsying the need to consume) and look at 'em a lot (quelling the need to imagine). Oh, bliss.
My favorite figgie is the munchkin giant copy machine repairman with detachable invoice book and repair kit. It's better than G.I. Joes!

I collect pretty things. Dice, need more dice! Sparkly darlings!
I like the boxed set of drone/businessmen complete with attache' cases and matching ties, but I can't seem to get the little phones off their ears, I think they're glued on.

I just want everyone to know that I will never play any editions >3.5. If I do, anyone and everyone may digitally slap me. You may also interject "Whassamattawityou?" or anything to that effect. Just sayin'.
That's what heathy always says, and Sebastian always says he's going to be eating crow pie someday.
For my part, my mind drifted from the conversation as soon as I heard the word "pie."
Mmmmm. Pie.

So ahh. Well, when 2nd edition was coming out I was looking forward to the new edition. When 3rd edition was coming out I was down right excited. With each change of edition, there came the nay sayers and doom profis "D&D is dead". Maybe I'm getting old (I'm older than Lady Lena, thats old!), but I'm not looking forward to D&D 4e. I just don't see any significant changes in roleplaying. With both the second and third editions, I could see the need for change. In fact, the D&D games had already evolved and changed so much by the time the newer editions came out, you could say I was playing a different version of the current edition. I can't say the same about D&D 3e. Even with the 3.5 changes were not that significant. I just don't think this d20 system is played out yet enough to warrant a new edition.
then again I'm old, even older than Lady Lena (and I will always be, so naaayyy).

*dancing gleefully* someones's older than me!
My husband was loathe to start playing 3e, but we did, and enjoy it more than 2e. When 3.5 came out, we were forced to buy those, as all the other players in the group had it, and we were tired of the discrepancies between books. When 4e comes out, none of them will be allowed through my door. Nope, nuh uh, no way. I swear it this time, really.

I simply refuse to update to any upcoming editions of the game. I believe that the d20 system is adequate to serve all of my roleplaying needs now and in the future. I only switched to 3ed. reluctantly and wasn't my happy jolly self when they came out with 3.5 . But i bought that too just so as not to fall behind. well here it is, just a couple years down the road and we hear talk of upcoming 4.0!
fool me once, shame on you.
fool me twice, 3 times, 3.5 times? okay I can take it.
fool me 4.0 times? I don't think so.
the cost of replacing what i already have is just too much.

The way I see it, 4e (or d&d4 as I'd like to call it, marketing the die of course) will be a rehash of the current ruleset incorporating d20 Modern and the new Star Wars SAGA edition.
This falls in line with the jump from Basic to 1st, progressing to 2nd (3e was the jump in systems, d&d4 will be the passage like from 1 to 2). With all the progress that they've done with SW1 to d20M to SWR and now SW SAGA, it's only a natural evolution. Even Call of Cthulhu d20 was a staging for d20 Modern.
From a business standpoint it makes sense. They took all the house rules everyone was coming up with and produced 3e along with streamlining the processes. Even 3.5 was a bug fix for 3e because there just wasn't enough true testing of the new system. 1e to 2e was the same way around.
But then again, that's my opinion. I could be wrong.
