What to do with an unconscious crested fell drake?

Savage Tide Adventure Path

My group are just finishing chapter 1. Rowyn escaped, but they stabalised Gut Tugger. A half-decent knowledge check gave the group information that Crested Fell Drakes are normally good, and a detect magic showed the collar as magic. They put 2 and 2 together and got 5.

So they removed the collar, and healed the creature - which woke up, and attacked them. So they knocked it unconscious again.

The Neutral Fighter who is a member of Zelkarune's Horns wants to take it to the Arena - bonus affiliation points for him.
The NG Dragon Shaman (who has been reading Book of Exalted Deeds) says that this would be cruel to the animal and wont stand for it.
The two CN members of the party dont care either way, but have a preference for trying to sell it as an exotic animal on the black market.
Another NG member of the group said that it should be set free.

One of the characters mentioned that the nobles in Sunrise district were elves, and maybe they would want to take the creature and look after it.

A very 'loud' discussion took place just before we ended the session on what they should do, which was interested to listen in on. People were role-playing their alignments, and it was 'realistic' that the characters disagreed what to do, but they are going to have to make a decision as a group - dont know what that would be.

So, I thought I'd post here to see what other people thought the various alignments should do in this situation.

We had a similar problem, having knocked out Rowyn and chamred the Feldrake.
Problem with letting it live was that the players realized, that the Feldrake was actually a unusually savage, if not permanently warped specimen of its breed - so we had a debate about "culling" it as a dangerous aberration of its kind, a few peeps wanting its hide as a trophy, setting it free in the wilderness.
In the end we sold it to the arena, since the druid considered it to be beyond 'redemption' back into a harmless "feldrake" (the GM dropt some heavy hints as too how badly corrupted its psyche seemed to be ), and had the character wanting the hide go up against it there =)

The big question is - can "putting down" a (helpless) dangerous, irredeemable (and what exactly constitutes "irredeemable" ?) semi-feral animal for the "Good", ahem benefit of its species and the community at large considered an evil act ? I wouldn't say so - unless there were some broad, generally accepted laws protecting animals, even including dangerous and "man-eating" predators. And Gutripper most certainly is a man-eater and predator.

Hence, unless in your campaign Sasserine or the dragon Shaman's home-culture feature a general veneration of (certain ) animals akin to that practised by those of the Hindi faith (TBOMK - extrapolating from the respect paid to cows/oxen in wide parts of India ), there should be no particularly evil stigma to putting the Feldrake down. unless, of course, this gets done for some vile purpose or an inherently evil, nasty way.

just my 2 cents

In my campaign, Gut Tugger ended up in prison along with Rowyn. When she breaks out, she'll also free him.

He'll recognize that her grudge against the PCs is a suicide mission, and will refuse to join her, heading off into the Amedio (or maybe towards Cauldron) instead. Rowyn, naturally, will blame the PCs for destroying her friendship with the felldrake, another reason for her to hate them.

Although ... now that I think about it, it may be cool if he hooks up with the Crimson Fleet and appears later in "Serpents of Scuttlecove". Hm.

I like to have my own take on modules.

I gave gut tugger a charisma of 17 and four levels of sorceror.
he was the head of the Lotus Dragons, and a lotus addict. Rowyn was his front.

I added a room for him, with crocodile skeletons wrapped in leather, and animated to act submissive whenever he was in the chamber.

Even the other lotus dragon rogues did not even know of his abilities.

Awesome! He's sure got a lot more combat prowess than Rowyn, IMO--though neither had much of a chance against five aggressive players in a tight space. Her only action was drinking that potion of gaseous form. Gut Tugger at least needed to be put down with a nigh max-damage maneuver from our half-orc crusader on a critical.

If I could do it again, I'd totally rip your idea off...and I mean that with the utmost respect.

thanks for the idea.

I haven't got to the lotus dragon guild, so I'm going to totally rip off your idea. Too bad Heirphantasm, Taleisin has a great idea.

The Exchange

In our campaign, Gut Tugger was convinced to join the party. He felt betrayed when Rowyn tried to down the potion and leave him for dead. It didn't work, and she died anyway (provoked attacks of opportunity), and the PC's basically made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Now he's a hireling aboard the Wyvern, for a gp a day.

Skill Focus, Profession (Taxidermist).....

Lantern Lodge

Light it on fire. It's the only way to be sure.

Either that, or pull all its teeth while unconscious; as well as its claws. Then, wake it up. Skin it alive for information.

Also, I'm assuming the party in question is evil.

:P

Take pictures of him in compromising positions with a giant toad. When he wakes up, blackmail him into submission by threatening to show the pictures to his friends...

In all seriousness, just kill him and be done with it.

I don't know I liked that first idea. We had the same issue. Our grappling fighter bear hugged the thing unconscious, and they ended up selling it to Zelkarune's Horns. The Druid may have had some objections but given that the heroes realized it was a sentient creature and not an animal the animal cruelty card wasn't a problem.
