D20 Modern / Future

Other RPGs

So it says that this is for anything non D20 related... But it doesn't seem to fit under D&D....

Anywho, has anyone played/run a game of D20 Modern/Future? To be honest, I'm really into it. I've already created all these tidbits of story and started the workings of a campaign and yaddah yaddah yaddah, and I'm really into what I've got down and then some. I actually don't have the Future/Future Tech books yet, but I'm gonna go try and see if I can buy them tomorrow.

Has anyone run into any problems or tidbits of information they might want to share? I'm going to run a campaign that's clashing with three things: Modern times, scientific breakthroughs rapidly leading to the future, and creatures leaking through different portals around the world. So far they've been just filtering in slowly, and hiding amongst society, carving out their own existence in the rapidly changing scenery.

That's where the heroes come in. They're contacted by an Agency that looks to capitalize on each characters' unique abilities. The characters have their regular lives, their regular jobs, but once in a blue moon they're contacted by this agency to come together and take on something they find they can use that characters unique abilities for. There are times when a Cybernetic SWAT team just doesn't have the tact and versatility of a hand-picked specialist team of Agents. They, of course, will have the agencies support. However, expensive things won't just be given to the characters.

This game is going to be run because some weeks we just can't play in my D&D SCAP adventure (I like mostly everyone being there for it. 1 missing I can deal with, but 2+ just leads to disaster). So I'm running this as a sort of one-shot-when-I-need-it game. Characters are selected for a mission, come in, do their deed, get paid - or whatever their characters come up with, go home.

I know there's a Shadowrun thread on here, but I didn't feel like threadjacking it. I'm thinking of taking some things from Shadowrun and using them in my game. Anyone think I'll have any problems with this? Different mechanics and such, yes, but I meant ideas and tidbits of "Hey, that's cool." And 3e vs 4e? I'll probably end up just getting 4e anyway. Anyway, thanks for any input you guys have.

That sounds like a lot of fun. Good luck with it.

I am anxiously awaiting the Saga Edition of Star Wars - when that comes out I may run it inbetween SCAP and STAP.

I was thinking of surprising my players with an adventure for d20 modern or future, but I think it's probably gonna be modern, since I bought star wars d20 last year and they really want to play that game, and I think d20 future and star wars are too similar, so I'll just go with d20modern. Anyone has any suggestions for topics? I wanted to start a resident evil campaign but am afraid it might get dull. Whatdyu think?

I think a zombie stomp would be cool for a while, then get boring.
Whoever the bbeg/organization is should be well diversified into other monster systems. Mutant catpeople assassins. Robotics. Juicers.

I was thinking of not making the pcs a part of an organization, dunno, it sounds too railroaded... And im brainstorming a little(imagine the pcs in the mall full of zombies, like some game for the x-box?)..

Also, some adventures about mystery and assassination would be cool...i DON'T KNOW, D20MODERN seemss like the only genres you can play is horror, mystery, sci-fi

Honestly, as far as a d20 Modern setting goes, I'd look into DarkMatter. I wasn't as happy with how it turned out shifting it from Alternity to d20, but at the same time, the setting is just great. Its like X-Files, if X-Files didn't constantly decide to screw around with its own premises.

Actually, its a lot better than an X-Files campaign. It can incorporate all sorts of weird conspiracies and supernatural threats, so you can run zombies running amok in an isolated town one week and then delve into aliens taking over humans the next, all the while wondering if your superiors at the Hoffman Institute are acutally trying to make things better or if they are tie into some organization that is competing with another secret organization.

But it "felt" better as an Alternity setting.

Agreed.

I had a good Alternity Dark Matter campaign going awhile back, though it kinda feel apart when our group converted over to v3.* DnD.

Last year, I ran a brief campaign in the Firefly setting using d20 Modern and Future. My players liked it. I am currently starting a Gamma World game using GWd20, and Modern and Futre andCyberspace, And Mongoose's Wild West, and all of my old GW modules n stuff, And "Omega World" from Dungeon mag 5 years back.
Another friend is brainstorming a Sliders/Quantum Leap/Stargate/parallel world campaign.

If you plan to buy some books, you might consider M&M by GrennRonin a better option. I just can not stand having 2nd "charismatic hero".

I wasn't suggesting more books to buy, actually. I meant to demonstrate the possibilities available. See what you can do with the books you have. Read through others at the bookstore or gamestore, and THEN spend your money.
I also have a roomful(ask my wife!) of old Traveler, Star Trek, Star Wars, Star Frontier, GURPS, etc. Most of this isn't being used except for inspiration.
Get some input from your players.too.

Dark Archive

A couple of years ago I tried to run a Hellboy/X-files type of campaign called B.P.R.D. New York. I tried to get the players to make hellboyish type characters but only one player did. He was a Wesley Snipes Blade day walking vampire. The rest of the crew was human. One player was the groups wheelman, another a doctor of history, a Irish priest with deep connections in the catholic church, and a native ex- tribal police officer from Arizona.

The group lived in an undergorund complex below a university in New Jersey and went on various missions. The adventures were modified from Delta Green and other Call of Cthulhu sources as well as a few from the WotC site and the Bronze Head trilogy and Come for the Reaping from the Game Mechanics.

It was fun,but after readin some Clive Cussler and Robert Ludlum novels I have a few new ideas Id like to try out. Particularly the novel the Promethus Deception, by Robert Ludlum is packed with ideas.

I cant say that I particularly like the rules for d20 Modern though. The classes are probably the biggest thing that bothers me. I havent read it yet, but I think maybe the Saga Edtion of Star Wars might be a good starting point for a system upgrade.

This is one of my absolute favorite genres, but I have a hard time envisioning it using d20 Modern rules. It might be my White Wolf Storyteller System and HERO System background, but everytime I get ideas for Hellboy or X-Files themed campaigns I can't quite convince myself to use d20 Modern. Perhaps I should give Dark Matter a shot, and I picked up the Saga Edition Star Wars book (which I like), so those might rekindle my love for a good modern Lovecraftian game.

Liberty's Edge

I have two d20 Modern/Dark*Matter/Urban Arcana campaigns I'm running.

The first one has a couple of Homeland Security agents stumbling into a massive conspiracy that has the government funding experiments in the dark arts. Though we're still early in the campaign, the characters have already suffered some unexplainable phenomena, i.e., magic, and encounters, i.e., zombie guard dogs. For the early part of the campaign, they'll be in over their heads, with an NPC or two who is much more immersed in the supernatural .. until they get on their feet and decide what direction they intend to take - i.e., stay within government or leave and join the well-funded establishment that exists to combat the evils that hide in the shadows.

The second campaign actually was a conversion campaign. Using Cormyr: Tearing of the Weave as its inspiration, a character from a D&D campaign nearly died, but in so doing, committed himself to Mask. He was stripped of all his gear, remade as a "Dark" version of his former self and dumped in Central Park, NYC. Mask doesn't like being kept out of secrets. Currently, Shar and Cyric are working at building up their base to take on Mystra in other realms. Currently, their alliance has subverted a large cathedral and is twisting people to pray and follow tenets of Shar and Cyric. Mask has no idea that this is going on, and his attention is elsewhere right now ... so, enter the PC to do reconnaisance for him. (The fact that he lost EVERYTHING on his person proved quite a challenge, but the player has been adapting to circumstances wonderfully.)

Interesting. I really like the classes ... and more so, the talent trees. I hope any revision of d20 Modern sticks with the generic classes and works to expand on the Talent Trees. (Of course, I'd be open to D&D doing the same.) But I agree that SWSE is a good starting point. I'm impressed with the upgrades and revisions and am especially curious what we'll see with 4e. I'm hoping that 4e gives good insight, such that between it and SWSE, we can upgrade d20 Modern on our own.

I also like the classes, but does anyone else feel that it's harder to run good encounter-based, 'cool location' adventures with d20 Mod than it is with d20 Fantasy? d20 Mod often seems to be more event-based, which often turns out to be railroading or leading by the nose.

I really think it depends on the DM and the group, not the campaign setting. I try to keep my campaigns open-ended and evolving, but with some underlying theme. But I've also been railroaded in campaigns, from Star Wars to D&D. (Never been a player for d20 Modern.)
