Here's perhaps more detail than you are looking for:
We'll authorize a charge of $13.99 plus shipping at the time you create the month-to-month sub. This allows us to verify that the card is valid. The available balance on your card will thus go down by that amount temporarily. Your bank will then expire the authorization on its own schedule (a few days to a few weeks), and your available balance will go back to what it was.
Then, when each volume ships, we will again authorize a charge against your card a few days before it ships. This gives us time to send you an automated email if your card has expired or been lost/stolen, etc., so you can contact customer service and set up a new payment method. When we ship it, that's when we actually settle the charge against your card.

If I understand correctly, the amount in my , "Available," should be different. However, there is an actual charge for 13.99 on my statement. Now I have to answer to my wife for that one (She's got me on a budget, you know). Is this correct? And if it is, what about the 4.00 shipping charge? My assumption is that the charge occurred prior to shipping (Like in July/August).

<sigh>.... That's the bug I've been trying to track down and fix all day. Some Pathfinder subscriptions ended up actually being charged now, instead of when the first book ships.
The bug has been fixed for any new subscriptions created from now on, and tomorrow we'll be refunding everyone's accounts who were affected. You'll get an email notifying you of this.
