I'm turning into my father / mother!

We’ve all heard that cry. Some, like me, have actually said it. I’ve even said, “It’s amazing how much smarter my parents get, the older I get.” We have a broad range of age groups on this message board. What kind of personal perspectives have changed as you have aged? What kinds of things did you used to disagree with your parents on, that you now find you agree with, or vice-versa? This can come in many forms: political, religious, moral/ethical, etc. You can include philosophy on child rearing, social activism, artistic tastes, food preferences…anything at all; just try to keep it in the perspective of you vs. your parents.

Personal example: I used to really chafe under my parent’s methods of discipline. I felt it a bit harsh, because I was comparing it to that of how my friends were treated by their parents. As time passed and I ended up with three kids of my own, I found out that I actually became a bit harsher a disciplinarian than my parents were! They ended up looking fairly lax and liberal (despite the otherwise conservative household atmosphere) in this area and I just couldn’t bring myself to be that patient, forgiving, tolerant and nonjudgmental. I have found myself echoing my father’s sentiments about how other parents are letting their kids get away with way too much and that many of “society’s ills” can be blamed on this unwillingness/inability of other parents to reign their kids in and teach them some manners and respect for others.

How about you?

I hope i dont end up like my parents. My dad ok i could handle, but not my mother.
she is certifiably crazy.
she is also turning into my senile grandmother who likes to hit on 20 year old men with accents. Can you see why i wouldnt want to down that road?

The only thing you have in common with your father is your accent.

I have no idear what you're talking about.

Just recently, now that I'm graduating college in a few weeks, I'm realizing what my parents were worried about when I said that I wanted to go in for art. A huge investment of money with very little immediately practical payoff. I would never regret doing this. But I see now, with reality knocking at the door, why they had wanted me to pursue teaching or architecture or law school or what have you and have art as a side thing.

I mostly find it true (that I'm turning into my parents) over relatively minor issues that I used to complain about as if they were a big deal when I was younger. For instance, strict and early bedtime. Now that I see the difference between my son's ability to concentrate on a task and maintain a happy spirit after a good night's sleep versus a truncated one; I'm just as strict as my own parents used to be about getting to bed on time.
My parents used to make me change out of my school clothes into "play clothes" when I got home from school. Always thought that was dumb since every other kid in my class only wore one set of clothes a day. Now that I'm shelling out serious money for my kid to appear as something other than a slob at school you can bet he's going to change into cheaper, sturdier clothing to roll around in the backyard with.
And it used to annoy me that my parents made me call all adults by their title - Mr., Mrs., Miss... Now, I require it from my own children as a show of respect. I find it so irksome when some little kid struts up to me and addresses me by my first name. I'm always tempted to glare down at him/her and say, "Who do you think you are to talk to me like that?"
Anyway, a couple years ago, while visiting my mother for mother's day, I walked out and she was wearing the exact same dress as me. I just stood there, staring with my mouth hanging open and it hit me like a ton of bricks how much we were alike (on the inside as well as the outside). I love my mom but I must admit, I retreated into the bedroom and cried for several minutes.

I wanted to go for it but my parent said the same thing take it as a side thing Same here, My sis tried to do it, but she didn't get any good job or found none, she is now trying to get a teaching degree and keeps hearing my parents say "I told you so."

I've got the opposite situation. I always thought, as a kid, that my parents were omniscient, even when I though they were being "unfair." I was even afraid that my mother could somehow read my mind. Now I'm older than they were when I was growing up, and I marvel at how much less they knew than I always assumed they did.

That's funny. I hope my kids think like you did!
