I just got the April Dragon and...wow. I love the new presige class. I have two players IMC who will love it.
The problem is that plot-wise it doesn't get introduced as an option until COBI when the players are 13th level. It is a 10-level prestige class. If the campaign ends at 20th, players won't be able to finish the progression. Also, if levels 16-20 take place in the Abyss, who will be on hand to give the player his tatoo?
How is anyone else planning to handle this?

The class should have been a 5-level prestige class.
OR: It should have been introduced earlier in the campaign.
Chalk this one up to miscommunication between the Dragon and the Dungeon editors, I guess.
My suggestion for that tattoo question is to either let the PC tattoo himself, or let him plane shift or otherwise return to the Material Plane to get it. The Abyss adventures aren't really on a timer, so there's plenty of opportunities to zip back and forth from home to the Abyss.

I noticed that too, but it didn't bother me that much really. What did concern me was that most of the tattoo abilities only activate 3rounds/day and a lot of them just activate on their own when the conditions are met.
Was there any thought to them lasting longer? maybe the rounds need not be consecutive? or the pc could chose when they came into affect?
I will probably talk to my dm about house ruling it like that, I was just curious.

So, anyone want to do a compressed Demonslayer? Would a five level version loose out on abilities, or would it compress them all into it? Some offical opinions would be nice, as I have an olman ranger demonhunter who REALLY fits the bill, but the "im 13th level, its 10 levels, I cant finish" is a real turn off.

Maybe I’ve missed something, but WHERE does it say that someone else must create the tattoo? I’ve not read anything saying the Totemic Demonslayer doesn’t create them.
Second point, Jakara can’t be the only Totemic Demonslayer in the IoD; the PCs could meet or see one earlier on. In any case, even if he is, it’s the Olman holy men/people who perform the required ceremony, so they can introduce the concept to potential Totemic Demonslayer PCs. Such an event could happen before the end of HTBM (if the DM runs Torrents of Dread (#114) before the PCs get to Farshore, for example, or the DM could create a mini-adventure where the PCs help an Olman holy man), or at any point after the PCs reach Farshore once they've done the Olmans a favor; perhaps an Olman witnessing the PCs' actions at the end of Tides of Dread counts, or dealing with the Shrine earlier in Tides.

The places on your body best suited to tattoos are not the places most accessible to giving yourself one. Plus, for something like that, I picture some kind of ceremony, lots of chanting, and a guy who can draw it *just right*

True, but at the beginning of COBI it is plot-rific. Also, giving a PC the Detect Demons power too early can ruin some of the "just what the ** is going on here, anyway" vibe.
I am super-impressed that James answered so quickly and so well. Knowning that the last adventures aren't "on a timer" is a relief. It will also give my players a chance to craft nifty items first. Thanks, James!
I am leaning toward a home-brew version of the revamp options in PHB2. After the first level of Totemic Demonslayer, a player can choose to 'convert' an earlier level every time he adds a new one. For example, the 13th-level the character may be F13. Next level he is F13/Td1. Next level he "converts" to F12/Td3. This can lead to out-of-control power gaming if I'm not careful, which is why I'm fishing for ideas.

Dag, as you want to introduce it at level 13, I'd recommend use of the retraining system (even if you don't use all the change-quest type stuff).
You think a Ftr12/Tot3 might be a bit powerful- what if the PC takes Improved Favored Enemy (adds +3 to bonus) and Favored Power Attack (doubles or triples Power Attack damage) (both feats are from Complete Warrior)?

One of my PCs is a member of the Church of Whirling Fury. I had not foreseen your particular dilemma, but if it comes up I will have them add all the tattoos at the original ceremony. The tattoos only gain their power at the appropriate time and with some ceremony, but is a ceremony the other PC can perform. IMHO the 3 round limit is not too bad, but if I were playing it, I would have multiple tattoos of the same item.
