Dark English Ale

A friend of mine just gave me several bottles of Wychwood dark english ale. He claimed it wasn't fit to drink. I haven't tired it mostly because I'm not sure to drink it ice cool or room temp. forgive my ignorance on Ale. I'm an American and never have had much if any ale that I can remember, so I figured some of ya'll Brits could help me out. Any opinions of Wychwood? and cold or room temp?

I think English ale tastes best slightly chilled. I think that's the best American description of what the English might call room temperature.

I'm not British, but I brew my own English ale at home, so I don't know if my opinion is worthy.

Some english folk prefer it at cellar temperature, some like beers like guiness extra cold (which is...you know, extra cold...)- go with what you like old chap, but whatever you do - drink it and cheer the english cricket team as they tan the aussies (or probably not).

I go as cold as I can for every beer and could give a pimple's burst less about what everyone else thinks. If I get it somewhere other than my house and it's not what I'm accustomed to I don't balk.


Not familiar with this exact brand, bt usually I prefer my dark beers in room temperature (or slightly under) and others cold.

As this is the Hobgoblin Ale I've had a few years ago, drink it cold, otherwise the finish is too rank.

Stouts I do prefer room temperature, but normally I like my beer (and the glass it's in) frosty. Dark ale sounds to be something I would want lightly chilled.


Lightly chilled will more than likely end up being better. Dark beers and ales tend to have that in common. At least as far as I'm concerned. My recommedation. Stick one of the bottles in the fridge. Leave it in there to get cold. Then open it up and try. Drink it slowly, to allow it to warm up just a bit. This way you should get a wide range of how it tastes at different temps. The only caution is don't drink to slow cause it'll go flat and taste like shit no matter the temp.
