Just wanted to take a moment and show you guys what our group has put together for our new pirate themed campaign. We went all out this time and it has been a blast.
The Western Expanse, map hand drawn by our fantastic GM. http://i.imgur.com/hXqJj.jpg
The Red Letter, our intrepid vessel. http://i.imgur.com/uHS7j.jpg
We all (well, soon to be all) have purchased, green stuffed (a sculpting agent) and painted our own models for the campaign. I'd encourage any group to do this, it's awesome. http://i.imgur.com/ymkb1.jpg
The four pirate legends, painted by our GM. http://i.imgur.com/fvO7d.jpg We hope to be the 5th, some day...
Two-Face Tannis, our short lived captain (left) and Wavil Bruge, high inquisitor (right.)http://i.imgur.com/nHg7C.jpg
Some miniature ships for navigating on the overland map. http://i.imgur.com/OgjQJ.jpg
And finally, our group, in no particular order:
John, the Goblin Doctor (fighter) and his monkey nurse http://i.imgur.com/jjCP1.jpg
Radley, the Corsair http://i.imgur.com/1YglI.jpg
Marco, Catfolk Ninja http://i.imgur.com/CC2pj.jpg
Lillith Dreadmask, Witch/captain http://i.imgur.com/tt6bR.jpg
Alvin Aligator, Gater-druid http://i.imgur.com/vhvUx.jpg
Hightower, Alchemist http://i.imgur.com/w67N9.jpg
We've been videoing our sessions and broadcasting them for everyone to enjoy (and it's more fun when more people are involved.) Give it a look if you're so inclined, we hope to bring more people into the game and inspire some other players. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_qFzXeDUpM&list=PLr8mrSTjqGo4EygfjMLcBY 7kIm9yRe0aD&index=1
Any advice for a pirate campaign?

I would be very interested in the ship making.
Also, the map shown, is that merely the world map for traveling overseas? Or is that the only map, and you guys use that to fight as well with? I'd think it's e first one, and then when You ' land' somewhere you use a regular 1x1 square map.
We've got a few maps we use for battle. Here's a still from one of our unreleased videos featuring a ship battle- boarding and all. The blue "water" under the ships has a grid we use for miniature ship to ship, but when they come into contact we switch to the ships with the 1inch grid (1in = 5ft, ships to scale) Pictured here is a galleon (100ft) and our ship, The Red Letter, (70ft)

We also use a standard dry erase for encounters on land.
Maps all over the place.
