One of the players asked if he could "continue as a ghost" when playing the STAP. I haven't got Ghostwalk and wondered if anyone has either tried it in the STAP or could tell me what it entails. I can imagine an incorporeal character could get up to all sorts of misschief in the first few chapters (We've just started). Hence my hesitance in saying Yes...
The ghosts presented in the ghostwalk campaign setting would take some serious readjusting to fit into a standard campaign realm like Greyhawk, Eberron, or FR. Before you consider allowing him to play a ghost (with all its attendant adjustments to character level and problems with playing an incorporeal creature) think about whether its going to be worth it in the long run. Also think about corporeal alternatives to a ghost such as a deathless creature.
Yeah Ghostwalk is more like a separate campaign setting in many regards, because on death you don't just become a ghost character where you are, your spirit gets dragged off along the Etheral (or Astral always get them mixed up)plane to the city where the Ghostwalk campaign is set. From there you can get back to the Material Plane, but it isn't so straight forward as just becoming a Ghost.
One of the core books or world-generic supplements has rules for playing a ghost after you die. I think it gives you a cap to the number of additional levels you can add after death. The rules seem perfect for character death near the end of a story-arc or as a stop-gap measure until a new PC can be brought in.
I don't remember which book, but I'm sure someone else does.
Book of Exalted Deeds has the Risen Martyr PrC which gives you precicely 10 levels of continued "life" after you have died. You can only take levels of Risen Martyr once you start, and once you reach lvl 10, the next time you would level you are taken out of the game to your reward.
Its not an easy PrC to obtain since it requires you to have martyred your self, not just died haphazardly.
I'll be considering this should my pc die in STAP, but thats mostly because we're in the FR, and I'm already on the exalted path with a vow of poverty havin dragon shaman :)
