Misplacing the Sea Wyvern (SPOILER?)

Savage Tide Adventure Path

Just in case this is a SPOILER for some...

Spoiler:

Has anyone played in, or DMed, a group that somehow made the Sea Wyvern unavailable for the Sea Wyvern's Wake?

My group has been talking about selling the ship and it's taken some odd circumstances to prevent that.

Anyone else had the players otherwise lose that integral ship? What did you do to make up for it?

To deal with this sort of situation, I'd advise the direct approach. Tell them, Out of Character:

"Hey, guys, don't sell the OBVIOUS PLOT DEVICE. If you do, the Savage Tide campaign is over."

If they still sell the boat, it means that they don't want to play Savage Tide, and you should either find a new group or find a new campaign. There's no good way to force players to go through a campaign against their will.

"Now, where did we park that thing?"

If they insist on selling it...

Have Lavinia purchase it.

...but she doesn't have enough money at present, so she'll just have to pay them some money now and the rest when they reach Farshore.

When they get stuck in the Sargosso Sea: "Would it help if I got out and pushed?"

Spoiler:
I remember long ago when I played through U1 Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, the pc's ended up in control of a ship when they bested a group of pirate/smugglers. I played it with one dungeonmaster who immediately and with the full weight of divine might cheesily had that ship swiped from us as quickly as possible; he was a real ballbuster and couldn't stand having a group of 2nd level characters in control of a ship.
I have to admit that...having been through that "dm giveth dm taketh away" scenario, if I ever got something as cool as a ship again at a somewhat low level, I'd be out to sell it too. Maybe you could talk to them, I don't know.

It MIGHT!!

Spoiler:
I just thought up something wicked--have Meravanchi buy the ship. Boy, in the adventure as written he acts like he owns it, imagine him if he actually did!

Liberty's Edge

Heath, that's an awesome idea

I second that motion, Heath.

But, before that happens maybe Lavinia could catch wind of what the PCs want to do and tell them prematurely about her plans to go to the Isle of Dread.

It just came to me.

"Dude...! Where's your ship!"

I was going to suggest having Lavinia buy it, but the idea of Avner buying it is even better. He's already on board as a financier of the trip, it doesn't seem outlandish that he would own one of the boats too.

Spoiler:
Having the Meravanchis purchase the Sea Wyvern is an excellent idea! It makes it even more funny that the family will purchase a ship just to get their wayward son out of the way!

I like the idea also in that it takes my players out of the equation. Right now it is very difficult to gauge where they are going to go, and it is even possible that they might cut ties with Lavinia.

Thanks a lot everyone!
