BTW, which god is the Martyred One? That's Ilmater, right? Not that it really makes any difference...

You are correct, though hunting down and slaying evildoers is not really a very 'Ilmater' thing to do. Chalk it up to your character's limited knowledge of the good deities...

I was initially going to yell "long live the Morninglord!", but that made even less sense...and Ilmater was the only other name I could recall...

Tyr (the Maimed God), Torm (the Just God) and Helm (the Vigilant One) would have made the most sense but, again, perhaps Othos' knowledge of the good deities just isn't the most detailed and he blurted out the first one to come to mind.

Technically Torm was more Martyred than Illmater (who just suffers a lot) since he actually was killed in his battle against Bane in the huge battle that killed them both--until he got restored by IO.

This is true, but common vernacular holds Ilmater as the 'Martyred God.' Certain clerics and particularly fervent followers of Torm could certainly draw that parallel, however. Suffice to say that your statement has thoroughly confused everyone in the building... which is more or less what you were looking for. :)

Presumably, Berzeral looted Morn's corpse (at least that is how I read it) and has anything of worth with him (those weapons are worth something). Also it looks like both Berzeral and Orthos may both be trying to claim the items with the odd symbols on them. For now, Shador is trying to solve the mystery of the Shadow Thieves so he is less interested in mundane loot (items less than 100gp) but nicer items can make life easier when sold.

Anyone care to confirm if his important and/or most valuable things were taken?

Grand Lodge

Male Human Expert 5

The way I saw it was that Morn came to the door in his pyjamas, and that his corpse thus contained nothing of value beyond his twin knives. I then grabbed his stuff from the bedroom, and should thus have everything from Fate's list of loot.

Having said that, Othos is not primarily motivated by greed, and won't push too hard for choice mundane loot. I was kinda intending to throw all the stuff on the table once we get home and do the "see anything you like?" thing...

Shadow Lodge

I mainly don't want an important plot item to be missed. Loot is well...just loot.

Yeah...I'm a mite confused. I gathered that while everyone else was hanging around the window trying to blast the night watchwoman, that Berzeral was rummaging the room for items of interest. Trying not to take more than his share of things--mostly the keys, ring and the parchment with the interesting marking.

Granted in retrospect it seems as though he doesn't have any of them--nor even the opportunity to protest since Othos posted me "shambling off". I'm not sure where reality lies.

Certainly the express idea was for us NOT to just return to Othos' place...and it would be ideal to have the opportunity to talk that point over.

Oops... sorry about that. To the extent I was thinking very much about anything, it probably was that Berzeral seemed pretty hot to get off and do his errands. Anyway, nobody has taken any treasure yet, so that can be settled fairly easily; you can certainly have the parchment, but only after I copy the design. :P

Reviewing the posts, yeah, Berzeral got to the goods first. In order to preserve some kind of continuity, do you want to just say that Berzeral told the others that he was going off somewhere for a little while and would meet up with you tomorrow at Othos's place or something? I'd prefer to work it out here on the discussion thread so I can make a segue post in the game thread to smooth out the bumps. Berzeral definitely has the stuff in Morn's pack currently (which was pretty much everything). Othos has the kukris. Morn's coin pouch also has the rune on it, so you could very well EACH have a copy of it. Please discuss what's going on in here and I'll restore order with a post to the game thread once we've worked it all out. Please try to refrain from posting in the game thread until we've got it settled to keep the storyline as smooth as possible. Sorry for the confusion, folks. We'll be on track soon.

Othos couldn't care less about the goods. However, as the rune is also on the pouch, we have no problems whatsoever. In that case, we're obsessing about that instead of the parchment.

Berzeral still needs to return to the apartment to collect the girl, so it makes excellent sense for us to meet there - and by sleeping there, we get to keep an eye on her.

Berzeral? Going to visit the apartment? Going directly to the guildhouse? Taking the parchment with you? Who has Morn's keys? I don't care who has what or where people are going, but I need to know so I can move the story forward.

I'm just going to arbitrate if I don't get a mutual reply by tomorrow morning. We've got to keep things moving. I'll have Berzeral head to the guildhouse with the parchment and the keys and the rest of the party (minus Torbjorn) will head to Othos' place unless I hear otherwise.

That sounds about right.

Male Human Supreme Overlord

Okay, since it looks like Vatt is not opposed to Berzeral taking off with the keys, ring, and parchment, he can do that without a problem to go visit the Hyena guildhouse. Leaving the other runed item (the coin pouch) with Othos seems like a fair compromise to me. I'll wait to hear from Grim before I make my arbitration tomorrow morning to make sure he's cool with all this. I don't want to step on any toes and make people feel like I'm doing anything unfairly here. Rule #1 is, of course, 'Have Fun.'

I really do want to run the scene with Berzeral meeting with the Hyenas. It'll be fun.

Male 3.0: Simulationist 8 / Dramatist 5; 4e: Actor ( Explorer multiclass) 4

Yeah. Sounds about right. Berzeral hates the idea of the group meeting at Othos' house (though his reasoning has yet to be shared) and the idea that this remains the plan despite his attempts to formulate a new plan will wrankle him a good one...but nonetheless he is currently headed out to visit the Hyenas with the goodies in tow.

Ready for the next post.

Re: My schedule

A couple of schedule related items:

Thursdays are my tabletop night, which begins about 4pm EDT and runs for 6 or 7 hours. I will try to post tonight when I get back if Shador needs to wake up and do something.

I have a consulting trip to balmy Arizona planned for Mon June 4 returning on Weds June 6 (I hope). I may be able to post while I am out, but then again, I may not be able to; I will have to see. Feel free to NPC Shador during these dates if needed. I am very flexible and want to stay involved in this story.

I have a consulting trip to deep eastern Europe planned for the week of June 16-June 23. I will basically be out of pocket then as my destination does not have reliable internet access. Again, feel free to NPC Shador while I am away.

I have another consulting effort in California Aug 16 - 19. Again, it is possible I will be able to post, but unlikely.

Other than these dates, I do not have planned travel this summer and do not expect the need for new travel . I will keep you posted if these dates change.

Shadow Lodge

I am enjoying the game thus far and am intrigued by what is going on with the Shadow Thieves. I know Shador has been sort of in the backseat storywise but it is because I feel he does not have a strong tie thus far to the group or any "side activities" in Calimport. By this I mean Berzeral has his nefarious group/tribe and mysterious designs upon the hapless woman he holds prisoner, Torbjørn has a shipmate in the city and has had a feud with Umberlee, Orthos and Gimble seem to have known each other and been plotting something from the beginning of the game. However Shador hasn't yet found his niche in Calimport. He has stopped his wandering along the Sword Coast to take advantage of the Shadow Thieves disarray and is only now learning why not having the thieves present in the city may be a bad thing.

It seems like having some side activities like those of Torbjørn or Berzeral would help drive the story along and I will look to doing something along these lines unless our DM reccommends against it. I guess the issue comes down to one of scope. Are the group's activities occurring against the backdrop of the Shadow Thieves issue (where the group may slowly involve themselves with this aspect of the game as they carry out their own goals) or is the scope of the game narrower where the party should really be putting most of its efforts into resolving the Shadow Thieves issue to the relative exclusion of other goals? I suppose I thought the scope was narrower and thus was slightly unprepared for a broader story, hence Shador's relative inactivity so far. I am more than willing to be a part of either story, but if the story scope is broader reather than narrower, I will need to jump in and get Shador involved in some mischief of his own (*evil grin*).

Any comments DM Fatespinner? Others?

Male Human Supreme Overlord

I intend to keep the scope of the game reasonably narrow without (hopefully) being strangling. There will be side plots and I am more than willing to accomodate a PC's sideplots so long as they are not so significant as to overshadow the core of the campaign. If Othos decided to start a crusade against the clerics of Selune and dragged the party off to Waterdeep and Silverymoon to assult the churches directly, for example, that would be getting away from the root of the story and would probably leave the other PCs feeling kind of left out in the process.

I will let everyone know that these are not modules that I'm running. These are my own creations. More than that, however, the games that I run are not linear. I do not write story arcs ahead of time and put the PCs on rails. I let you build the rails and simply figure out how to steer the rails towards the destination I have in mind. I like to think its a very effective and unrestrictive game style and I'm glad to see that everyone seems to be enjoying it so far.

Lich, with all that said, a dwarven rogue formerly from Waterdeep may very well have been in with the pirates of Skullport to some extent. Perhaps your 'real' reason for coming here was to find out why the ships from Calimport have been so well-armed and well-manned recently. Now it begins to make sense that, since the merchants are clearly making more money without the thieves around, they are able to afford more help and more firepower and thusly make life hard for pirates.

You could also have been an outcast from the thieves' guild in Waterdeep. Perhaps you bungled something and they kicked you out. Maybe you betrayed someone and they're HUNTING you. Maybe you stole something and they don't know about it yet (you think). Calimport is pretty far away from Waterdeep, but a dwarf who uses a rapier is probably going to stand out. Perhaps you came here seeking allies for when the Waterdhavian thieves DO come for you? I've already decided that this 'Majib' individual you named was a Shadow Thief and that his absence makes sense now that you know something of what has happened here.

I like to consider myself a master of improv. Any name that you drop in conversation will become a living, breathing NPC SOMEWHERE and the more you reference him, the more important he becomes. I have no problem running sideplots. In fact, sideplots are encouraged! This Shadow Thief rabbit hole goes pretty far down and you're going to need plenty of experience and equipment to get to the bottom of it.

I will be fairly busy at work today given the workload I've just been handed, but I'll try to get a post up this afternoon to bring everything up to date in the game thread. I don't imagine we'll need to worry about Shador tonight since Berzeral is going to be in a scene by himself for awhile.

Yes, this is actually already part of Shador's background. He slew two agents of The Xanathar's Guild and fled Waterdeep owing them money. He has since travelled down the Sword Coast looking for a "safe" place to resume his activities. Little does he know how close Skullport is to Calimport (FRCS pg281 if you wish).

Between this issue and the disappearance of Majib, who may actually be a path to unravelling the Shadow Thieves mystery, there is certainly something to go on here.

Hey kids, so sorry to have been absent lately. Stonehenge showed up this week, so I've been helping out a LOT at our super-secret extra warehouse, but now that they're here and now that it's the long holiday weekend, I should be around a bit more. Let the story continue!

Awesome! Glad to have you back! The game thread should catch you up to date. I'm waiting for Grim to respond so that we can get this scene with the Hyenas underway.

Male Human Supreme Overlord

You know, I just realized something: Phil and I never discussed Torbjorn's weapon group proficiencies. I have a suggestion, however.

Since you have a barbarian level (two, in fact), you get the Basic group plus 3 others. If you took Hammers/Maces, Exotic, and Unarmed Strike as your groups, you could use a Maul one-handed with no penalty. A maul is basically a bastard sword but in hammer form (i.e. it's normally a two-handed weapon but can be used one-handed with an Exotic proficiency). A maul fits the description you've had of Torbjorn's warhammer all along and is more befitting his gigantic size anyway. Not only that, but you'll get to upgrade from 1d8+7 to 1d10+7 damage! You could take something else in place of Unarmed for your last group, but I just thought that it fit the image of the character best. The difference in price is so minimal that I wouldn't even worry about it. We're talking a difference of 10gp or less here. Let me know if this plan works for you, Phil. Thanks!

Male Human Supreme Overlord

Yes, Vatt, Talos is the Storm Lord. Also, Gimble never said exactly what happened to Torbjorn's ship, but we can easily say that he explained what he saw during the hour of 'quiet conversation' that you all had while Torbjorn was stalking around outside. Be careful what you say in-character, though. Play-by-Post does not give me the luxury of 'side scenes' with characters who are not present with the main group so you've gotta watch for when things happen that your character shouldn't be aware of.
