I wasn't sure how this adventure would go over with my old school group, but I am happy to report that everything went well! The rules in 3.5 worked wonders by allowing the players to still roll dice while moving the story forward. Even though we went through the adventure quickly, the list of things that was accomplished in that time is very long. Securing invitations, finding the sickhouse, gather info checks, intimidate and diplomacy checks, Ilthane's lair and a couple of cool monsters made this one to remember. The highlight of the evening was the archery contest with our ranger taking on Zeech himself. I just made it a best of 4 dice contest with Zeech receiving a +3 to his rolls. Something so small ended up being very cool because everytime Zeech shot, the ranger would roll just a tiny bit higher. Building up to Zeech rolling a 16+3=19(and a description of "zeech kills 4 birds") and the ranger firing right back with a nat 20 for the win("ranger kills 6 birds..") impressing Lashonna enough to meet with the party next adventure. You have to love it when an adventure goes a lot better than you thought it would :)

Your post actually highlights a dilemma I am expecting to face when my group made it to the games:
Why - the heck - should a ranger kill birds for sports?
Nothing says that rangers need to be protectors of the forest. I was recently listening to an NPR piece about lobster poaching. The coastal park ranger responsible for catching the poachers had no problems with selling the poached lobsters, and he himself eats lots of lobster and frequently goes to catch his own.
Rangers are simply characters that are very good at surviving in the wilderness - that fact has no moral or ethical implications.
