Oh come on don't tell me the creative folks down at Paizo haven't got backgrounds for them? I would have thought they were based on playtest characters or something.
As for a punching dagger it doesn't look like that on the cover of 143 more a blade attached to a gauntlet to keep the hand free for spell casting.

It's true. We don't have names or backgrounds or stats for any of the 11 iconic heroes we use in Dungeon. The closest you'll get, I suppose, is my Age of Worms character I'm playing in the office campaign; her name's Tyralandi and she's based off the art for the cleric of Wee-Jas (cover of #131 and elsewhere). Dragon editor Wes Schneider did the same for the paladin, but Abelard (as he named him) died pretty quick.
All the rest are nameless and statless and without background. They're used mostly just so that when we send an art order to an artist (in many cases, the artists don't play D&D) as reference. It's easier to just paint the same wizard all the time rather than to risk getting a wizard that's doing things that D&D wizards can't do. Plus, by using the same 11 iconic heroes, we build a personality and sense of familiarity in the magazine.
As for what kind of weapon the wizard on the cover of #143 is using; it's a punch dagger, I suppose, althoguh one modified so it doesn't require a free hand to hold.

Perhaps you could ask the public to send in critical threats on each of the iconic characters as they might appear at the beginning of an adventure path, halfway through one of the adventure paths, or at the end of one of the adventure paths? You could run it like a competition and pick the best entries to publish in your magazine.

That'd be cool. I like designing characters, so I'd be up to the challenge should it present itself.
C'mon, James. Y'know ya wanna.... ;)

Personally I'd love to see the stats and background on that Female wizard . . . she's yummy.
I hope to check out her "background" in a later edition's artwork! ;P
I like the idea of submissions for iconic's stats from subscribers. I would love to see this done as a pdf download or something like that which could be free on the website. It would be cool if some of the Boardlings could get their names on a piece of Dungeon's products. Maybe the stats could be submitted and voted on by board members so as to take all the fuss out of Paizo's already overworked staff having to peruse 100 stat blocks for each iconic.FH
