Dragon Magazine General Discussion

A few questions from a would be writer. I placed a query last march to Dragon, and have heard nothing of it since. What should I include in the chaser E-mail? Also due to play testing one of the Queries concerning a new player race has changed rather. Should my chaser detail them as I now see them? Lastly would it be better to include a few other ideas for articles in the chaser E-mail, or to send a separate one?

Thank you for taking the time to answer me, as this was my first query and I am a shade uncertain how to proceed.

To whom did you send it? Jason, Wes, or me?

The answer to that question helps us guide you in answering your question. At this point, though, I suspect the answer we give you (regardless of to whom you sent it) will be: "Send it again, because we don't have it."

We're pretty "caught up" with our submissions back to a time after March of last year. I'm caught up through August. I don't know about the other guys, though.

Well it wasn’t terribly professional, Even managed to forget my name on the end, send a features filled query to you at class acts Mike, and took your advise in sending it to Dragon@pazio.com. Since then nothing. To be honest Id be almost glad if you didn’t receive it, as it would be a second chance to do it right.

Some clarification on what makes a good query, how much info on each article any formatting that helps, and where to send it for a quick response would be appreciated greatly though.

Alright, so you sent it on to Jason. It sounds like he never got it, though.

So what you'll want to do is go back through your first query and proofread it all over (sounds like you have a bit already) and then resend to Jason (dragon@paizo.com).

A good query follows all the basics: correct English mechanics (spelling, punctuation, grammar), spelling our names right (we all have tricky names, so be sure to look them up before sending in emails), and proper bribing (Jason likes D&D minis, Wes likes video games, I like anime).

Okay, that last one is a joke.

Sorta. ;D

Seriously, though, beyond the basics a good query includes several ideas in one email. A good one also shows you read and obeyed the horrifically out-of-date submission guidelines, or (even better) that you read the messageboards here and know that the guidelines are out of date.

Whining, begging, and complaining are three sure ways to the reject pile. :D

Ultimately, though, we're more interested in your ideas than anything else. If you have a winning idea we haven't seen before, you have a chance. (Unless you're a jerk. See previous paragraph.)

Good luck! :D

Thank you very much for the fast responce, time to get back to the old word mine :)

Mike, your name is hard to spell?

Here's a tip: Mike always needs his truck washed.

As my maiden name is McRae, I can attest that if you have a Mc in your name, it's tricky. Doesn't matter how simple it is -- I'll wager Mike gets McCartor, MacArtor, Mcartor, MacCarter...the weirdest I ever got was "MacCrea."

Heh. I have a friend whose last name is Mackowski. When he was in college, the software continually changed his name to MacKowski. He went to get it changed and was told, "But every name that begins with 'Mac' has the next letter capitalized." His reply, "I'm Polish, not Scottish. Please fix your stupid system."

And I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Mike's name gets misspelled. My last name (Ling) also gets misspelled.

i'm curious - how would someone spell "Ling" incorrectly? :)

Contributor

They keep spelling it, "Hey you lech, get away from my wife!"

:-D

And people seem to be dying to throw an "h" in there: MacArthur, McArthur, etc. Yes, my family is part of that Scottish clan, but for the love of all that is Scottish I'm not related to the crafter of the Japanese constitution!!!*

As for the rest of the fellas: Jason's last name has a superfluous "h" that floats around depending on its speller. Wes's last name has a German "c" that a lot of 'Merkans can't seem to get right. I frequently see Erik's name with a "c," which I understand to be the common way to spell it, even though I only know one Eric and a half dozen Eriks. Over on the Dungeon side, Jacobs sometimes loses his "s" and even Sutter reports misspellings of his name (I don't know, maybe people think he needs a third "t"). I imagine Jeremy doesn't run into spelling troubles too often, but who knows?

Always. :D

*chuckle* One of my students is McArtur (no relation-I ask him about it all the time :), but I also have McCarter and a McArthy. (I have not seen any of them with a corncob pipe though *wink*). On a side note I also have a McRae and a number of Lings.

I hope not! ;D

ok, one more quick question, as my memoroy is poor and my Google-fu is weak. For Class acts are Feats in or out. I can vagely rember you laying down the law in a thread entitled 'Class acts- The New world Order' or words to that effect, but I cannot find it now.

Contributor

That thread can be found Article Requests forum, or here, for your handy convenience.

The general rule of thumb is feats are OK in CAs, but there needs to be other stuff in the article too. And you get bonus points for writing more feats than you need for your word count so Mike can pick and choose his favorites.

Thanks Zherog, so feats to take advantage of a new concept are Good then? ok, one idea shot down but save able, other will be fine.

Contributor

Yep, feats in support of a new concept are perfectly fine.

Thanks, well to the word mines it is (You know given our avatars I find this cheerfull, freindly discorse deeply amusing. First time Belkar and Elan have gotten along Id say )
